Re: The Wings of Ra a la' Deco...
This is really cool, definitely one of your best. I like the shirt models too.
Re: The Wings of Ra a la' Deco...
Yeah!! The shirt models are great!
Re: The Wings of Ra a la' Deco...
oh wow, i was about to say something about no shirt comp then I saw the little Egyptian dudes and that made me lafffff.
Re: The Wings of Ra a la' Deco...
Great use of colors, they really go well together...+1
Re: The Wings of Ra a la' Deco...
Beautiful colors! They enhance the image nicely.
BTW... I saw your name as artist on a G1 App - That IS you, isn't it?
Re: The Wings of Ra a la' Deco...
egyptian? sure
mayan? sure
deco? ..?
Nice design, but I want to know what the placement on the shirt is like.

Well if you can find an EXACT definition that fits every "art deco" piece meets then mr. you're a better man than I. If I interpret the deco movement in this way, who's to say that it's not? Someone with a phd, or the author of a book. Even the most avid art teachers and students don't agree on one SPECIFIC definition for what qualifies as deco art. There are only general, very loose, trends that we as humans try to categorize, after the fact, into nice little packages that we can digest and give to others.
Ok, so philosophy lesson over. Not trying to argue, but basically I'm just pointing out the subjectivity of art as it applies directly to the comment you made.
Thank you for taking the time to show interest and post your opinion.

Sorry about that I made the shirt comp on my lunch break and had to hurry, but basically placement is to left extending across chest top other side of the printable area. I would post another example to show you, but I am out of town for the weekend. Thanks for looking/voting though!

While that may be true, art deco does have a specific style and certain elements. So while there is a lot that is up to interpretation with any art movement, there are also specifics that make up the movement itself.
That being said, I do like the design of this piece whether it is actually art deco or not. And if it does get rejected (which I doubt it will because there are a lot of entrees that basically don't have any art deco elements), then I hope you can find another place that will print it.

Cool, I get the idea. Thanks! GMV!
Re: The Wings of Ra a la' Deco...
This shirt is cool, but is NOT ART DECO!

Well, we're very fortunate to live in a country where we can express our opinions freely.
Ohhhh, say can you Seeeeeeeeee...
Oops, sorry about that. I can get a little patriotic sometimes.
Like I have said all through diff posts on this derby, a derby theme is already pretty subjective, so to give a theme that is inherently subjective (open to interpretation) with instructions that call you to interpret again in your own way, is asking for complaints about being outside of the theme.

I don't know what part of "art deco" is subjective. It seems pretty specific to me. I'm also not sure that you understand opinion... so if I made something in the style of Dali, and someone said "that's not art deco," that would be opinion if I thought otherwise? because that seems to be your response.

This is my first post on Woot even though I have followed the site for longer than I care to think. I hope that both of your shirts win, to me they are heads and shoulders above the current top 4.
Re: The Wings of Ra a la' Deco...
I think your design is wonderful... there was tons of Art Deco inspired by Ancient Egypt and just to say, Deco was eclectic... inspiration was drawn from all sorts of subjects and art and, you nailed it!
Re: The Wings of Ra a la' Deco...
Pretty much a sick nasty design we have here!
(that means I like it 0_o)

Holy cow, Sydney, are you the same one who bought Alkaline?!! Me, Dave Shenoda, and another friend just published it last week, and you were one of 3 people who bought the initial release. Thanks!
And Dave, these are some rocking designs. I forgot to check the derby until now, so it was a pleasant surprise to see you with two in the top 10. The wife sends her vote as well.
Re: The Wings of Ra a la' Deco...
Great deign but be careful many a great design has been rejected due to no shirt comp. Good luck I'd wear this one.

That's because you're not an artist. You, my old and simple-minded friend, are the artistic equivalent of the slow gazelle in the herd that gets eaten by the lions on the discovery channel.
I still love you though. What would batman be without the joker around. He would be Bruce wayne a boring millionaire with no purpose.
And so, I thank you adder for making my time here so fun. And just so folks don't get the wrong impression, please realize It's all in fun and by no means do I wish any harm on adder or his cultish followers, and by no means do I wish a swarm of starving locusts to fall on his home and stay there.
spanishmel wrote:This is great work and deserves to be in the top! It is truly deco and the egyptian theme is cool and very chic!
Well, I'm flattered. I've been called a lot of things...believe me, but one thing I've never heard in reference to myself is "chic".
...And for that I thank you madam. It's a very nice thing to say.
You are funny!
Re: The Wings of Ra a la' Deco...
One of your best David. I'm glad to see it doing good, but I'd love to see it doing better.
Re: The Wings of Ra a la' Deco...
I don't know enough about art history to classify this as deco or something else. Near as I can tell, some people claim it fits the style and some people claim it doesn't.
I know two things for sure:
1) This doesn't have a prayer of winning and
2) That's a crying shame because this is a great design. Like it this time just as much as the first time around.
GMV (again).
