You've seen it on Youtube, you've seen it on Last Call, you've seen your mother not understanding the youth of today (again) - now buy the T-Shirt!. (Or vote for something better - the world might thank you for it.)

And hey, how often do people look at your shirt and hum?

Haha. Pretty funny. There's just a few too many shirts with this look on here already. Nice take on it though.

Re: ShirtRoll'd

Humorous shirt, and it GMV, but it's notated poorly:

You'll never see two dotted eight's barred together like that. Rather, you should have written it as a dotted eighth, then a sixteenth tied to another eighth note. Also, since the 3rd note in the full measure begins on an up beat, it should be written as an eighth tied to a quarter. The math is correct how you did it, it just looks awkward, not how true music would be written.

Got my vote, best of luck!

I'm a little surprised by this, my musical experience is fairly non-negligible (I've played the double bass for 15 years, for instance) and this doesn't look odd to me at all. I wonder if this is some difference between US and British musical teaching - a quick hunt on Google threw up http://www.mymusictheory.com/grade1/lessons/7_beaming.html, which mentions that one can beam dotted quavers (or at least heavily implies it - they beam a dotted quaver to a semiquaver, and say that "dotted quaver have one beam"), but also is apparently a 'UK version'. If this is a case of a difference across the pond, that'd be pretty interesting. Thanks for the vote.

I had no problem with how it was written, I have played piano for 44 years and was a Piano Performance Major in college. I could not stop laughing when I realized what tune it was. This will stump even some music people until they look at the actual tune. I hope you win. This is by far the best shirt.

I really don't see the appeal of this shirt. Nobody will get this. Even if everyone could read music they won't get it. Maybe if text were allowed you could put "You've just been Rickrolled!" below it and it would make some sense.

What I really like about this shirt is not just that people who do get it will find it funny.

Many who don't get it (because they can't read it or haven't really tried) may ask what music it is - at which point the wearer can start singing to them. That seems like a better payoff than with the folk who 'read' it in the first place. Provided, of course, they then recognise that they have been rickrolled.

As we were all taught in our Written Theory classes in college, this would be 'disguising the beat' since in 4/4 the quarter note is to get the beat.

Sure this could have been redone with correct notation and ties. But I think the shirt as it is works for me. :D

If they know anything about music, the 4/4 is no more of a "text" context than the notes themselves.

Ok, I understand this is utterly and undeniably uncool, but -- for those of us who don't read music, and don't even get what "rickrolled" means -- could someone pleeeeze explain? Pretty please with cherries on top? I do so hate being left out of the joke.

Have you considered looking at wikipedia and searching for rickrolled?

another good place to see what it's about is here. Note: don't go there unless you want to be rickrolled.

And to expand a little on what Josephus has said - the shirt shows the notation for the opening of the chorus (when he sings "Never gonna give you up // Never gonna let you dow-ow-own"). Other comments here explain ways in which this is, or isn't awesome, depending on your point of view.

(Although now I'm wondering if someone claiming they don't know what rickrolling is might just be an April Fool's...)

That's the trouble with rickrolling: it's generally only funny to people who know about it. Otherwise it's just a fairly nondescript '80s pop song; and your victim will just scratch their head at you. Too many rickrollers don't realise that it's a borderline inside joke.

It's also pretty droll in its classic implementation of simply playing the song. (Though embedding it in the help of a beta of a certain Twitter client was a good unexpected variation.)

The rule of thumb is that if the way that you mean to do it has already been done, don't bother; it isn't funny. It's an eyeroll.

But things like this offer a creative twist that makes it actually amusing. I'd actually be tempted to buy this! :D

Woohoo - 500 votes, I think that's the last milestone I could reasonably expect to reach with, er, 50 minutes to go (assuming I've worked out what timezone I'm meant to be referring to...).

Just wanted to say thanks for all the votes and comments - this was my first attempt at the derby and I'm pretty overwhelmed by how well it's gone.

Edit: And I appreciate that I am now setting myself up for people to take their votes back so I fall back under 500, but hey, that would be pretty funny.
