Oh Geese yet another shirt that has "win" all over it. Great flow to the music, i think thats what that is... Anyway, I love your non anime stuff... Keep em comin! Good Luck
Re: Music is Life
amazing. truly.
I'd like it better without the reference to the ipod, but nonetheless, lovely....really lovely.
Re: Music is Life
I'd like to see more stuff like this out of you. Less overdone KAWAII^_^ guppy and more art with something to get out of it.
The color is ace.
Re: Music is Life
Something similar to this crossed my mind (I was thinking grapeleaf/vine wrapped headset) but love your choices of green!!

Seki, I've never been too fond of your supercute anime inspired style (though I did buy The Amazing Race shirt because I enjoyed the concept), I can honestly say that this design is very beautiful and it is nice to see you go in a different direction with your art. Would love to see more things like this from you. Colors are great, placement is great, could live without the ipod, but over all I love it. GMV and will purchase if it places. Well done.
jasneko wrote:I'd like it better without the reference to the ipod, but nonetheless, lovely....really lovely.
Ya know, I thought the same thing when I saw this, was about to post my thoughts then saw this comment, glad I'm not the only one.
I've loved (and bought) several of your designs, but this one has me torn. I love the look of this design, but really don't like the inclusion of the iPod. Sorry, but this week, you will not get my vote because of that. Maybe resub without it (or substitute the iPod with something else) and the shirt will definitely get my vote.
Re: Music is Life
This GMV, but I agree that the shirt would be better solely as a side design, without the cord/ipod attached, as I feel it detracts somewhat from the beauty.

This is my FAVOURITE design from you, Seki. ![]()
Thanks everyone for the comments..
I feel like the design could work without the ipod, but the main reason for the inclusion was that I wanted there to be a place the music was coming from, because I KNOW I would get the comment of "the headphones are not plugged into anything." The second reason was that I wanted to have a contrast between technology and nature, and the ipod is a very good example of that. So part of the reason for inclusion was to illustrate the concept that life can be contained within something so technological.
So ultimately, I like it better with the ipod, and I hope that you can see it from this perspective as well. And if you can't, I hope you can let it not bother you. (And if you can't do that, sad, but it was a design decision that I don't plan to change.

Ya know, now that you explained it that way, I can definitely appreciate "the concept that life can be contained within something so technological." I guess I just think the iPod "dumbs" it down for me. I think I have that stigma only because I know how mp3 as a format, dumbs down the quality of music overall and I associate the iPod (& other mp3 players) with that; as opposed to say, vinyl. Sorry. But again, with your explanation, I can totally dig where you're coming from. However, it still won't get my vote. I actually feel (dare i say) guilty for not voting because that is my only critique of the design and I always love everything else you do! So while I feel I should support you, I can't vote for something I'm not 100% for. If only it were plugged into something else...
Thanks for all your wonderful designs that I already own and LOVE! I look for your designs each derby! You still continue to be one of my favorite artists!

Re: Music is Life
Love the colors. When I first looked at the entry, I thought the iPod was some weird puddle or something, though. Which doesn't make any sense (to be honest, I didn't really think about it at all, though). Once I opened the larger comp it was clear. And now when I look at the entry, it looks clear, too. I think I'm just an rocket scientist.
Anyway, nice job!
This is really nice. I especially like the contrast between technology and nature that you've included. It adds a certain depth to the shirt. GMV!
Re: Music is Life
I like the placement.
Nice work.
Re: Music is Life
i love the green design element coming off the headphone, and the little blue elements are a nice touch.
it is a delight!
Re: Music is Life
So far my favorite of your designs. Hope this and the "Raindrops Keep Fallin" make it through. I would buy both of those without a thought. 8D
For some reason I have a thing with vertical designs...the upwards flow reminds me of the One Fish Two Fish shirt, which I happen to be wearing right now...

your title alone gets my vote. i agree, the lighting effects with that green are a nice touch

My husband and I have handwriting styles that are scarily similar to each other. Even stuff we wrote before we MET looks similar, and if anything it's gotten more similar over time.
Just sayin'.
As for the design: I love the colors. Too low for me personally to wear, but I'd consider it as a gift for a couple people I know.
Re: Music is Life
GAH why must all your beautiful swirly designs be on black shirts? I understand the contrasts make the designs pop out more, but I often can't give you my vote because I can't keep buying black shirts... This is a beautiful design, but venture out with some other shirt colors.
On that note, I bought your 12 Angry Beasts because it was on cranberry. =D
Maybe if you made it just a Liiiitle bit thicker, or maybe make the screen a Liiiitle bit bigger, I could pretend it was a Zune. /sigh. I'm sure no such luck though.
Re: Music is Life
Like everyone else, my only beef is with the iCrap.
Maybe a re-sub with a tape, or one of those old phonographs with the horn (But instead of a horn, it being a headphone jack).
I completely understand your stance if you don't re-sub or use my idea (Which you CAN do, freely. Just give me a "Shout-Out" cred, or something), because I am an artist as well (Albeit another form), and when people tell me to change things in my form, I feel as though it's not a representation of ME anymore - It's not MINE, bout "ours".
Regardless, you've got my vote.
I WILL buy AT LEAST one if it makes the cut (For my cousin owns an iPod).
If I can figure out a way to remove the iCrap without completely destroying the shirt, I'd buy 2.

Re: Music is Life
This is an amazing design. I have been with woot for awhile now and will say that this is a serious contender for my all time favorite. ipod? Really? Who cares. If you don't like ipods then think of it as a cheap knockoff you can get at the flea market. This is obviously getting printed. Count me in. Ipod or not...

Re: Music is Life
Colors are great and I always love when a design is simple but still artistic enough to catch your eye. I suck at that. Less is more is something I really have never been able to grasp or implement. Kudos to you though sir/madam. Good luck, as well!
Also, clever ipod ref. An obscured view and offset placement help to keep it from being a focal point for the nitpickers. Lord knows, if I had tried it might have disrupted the space time continuum.
That's why it's always nice to have friends. Like a line from a recent comedy show I heard, "Haters have to hate. It's there job. It's in their DNA...And that's what good friends are for they just block all the [guppy] off your back."
Friends are great! Predominantly anime driven designs or not!

I just don't want to be an advertisement for iPods, you know? That's one of the biggest reasons why I love the designs that come out on this site: no labels, just sheer creativity. I love the design, but I wouldn't buy it for that reason.
Wow, this is so far the best design in this derby (In my opinion).
I tend to like vertical designs and this is definitely done well on this shirt.
The colors are also great, black and green make an awesome combination.
The iPod doesn't bother me much.

Re: Music is Life
This is sealed in a well deserved first place :P
The thing that does it for me (aside from the great color scheme) is how you made the best use out of woot's restricted placement.
I also must say, I love these types of your designs so much more over your cute art any day. Sure, you can nail the cute shaded animal fad, but you have a special nack for showing motion and life in these extremely clean, creative designs.
Good work.
Re: Music is Life
I really do love everything about this design, except, like a lot of other people.... the iPod. I personally don't have anything against iPods, since I own one myself, I just don't want to go around reppin' one on my shirt. It's unfortunate, because I really do love everything else about it. I understand your explanation of why you included it...I just can't honestly say I'd wear this. So, no vote from me.

Thanks for all the kind comments.
Honestly I'm not really sure what the ipod hate is about - if you want to consider it a Zune, that's fine. They look very similar anyway, and there are not the signature white ipod headphones, so this could really be any media player of this generation. (would it help if I increased the screen size?) :p I don't have any preference for ipods over anything else, and I don't think the shirt advocates ipod use; I just feel like we're beyond the point where I can draw a CD player and have it still be relevant. :p

Well it was supposed to be an ipod (hence looking like one xD) but I don't want anyone to think of this shirt as promoting a brand or anything like that. I just wanted it to be recognizable as a music player.
@ drunkenalien - I use Open Canvas to draw my designs. Photoshop is probably better suited for it, but I'm crazy like that.

And it's obvious you've got nothing of real importance to say!
deeptendu wrote:Awesome, but there is something about having an image of an ipod on my shirt that I just can't get comfortable with...
Same... as I posted above, I think this design is reaally lovely but when I think about buying it the ipod holds me back. I don't like wearing shirts that have logos etc... wearing this would feel like I am advertising/ endorsing a product... which stinks because I think the rest of the design is so gorgeous! Sorry if there are those that don't understand that, it's just the way I am (and it looks like others are too).
Seki - I don't suppose you could humour us and submit a second version without the ipod, or a more ambiguous mp3 player? I would rather even just a cord pile than an ipod... if enough people wanted it, it could still make it up into the fog...
how about you go the opposite of relevence and draw a turntable?
jasneko wrote:

Is the problem mitigated slightly if the screen is made slightly bigger? Because this is something that can be done without resubmitting. But anyway, this is definitely not endorsing a product, if it were really an apple endorsement, the headphones would certainly be white. (also they would be earbud headphones. :p) I can sort of see how it would be seen that way a little bit, but it was not the intention, and I really want people to understand that.
The other thing is that while the height/width are ipod-ish, it's definitely a simplified version to the extent that it could easily be a generic mp3 player. There aren't the little white play/pause markers on the click wheel, for one. :p Also the screen is already larger than a normal ipod, and it is more boxy (as opposed to curved).
This is really beautiful. Great design!
It doesn't really seem like an iPod reference to me, since you've got the big headphones and there's not a lot of detail on the player. To me it looks like a generic MP3 player.
I like it!

Do you really think Woot is alone when it comes to customer stupidity? When my brother worked at Hardee's, he once had a customer that screamed and yelled because his cheeseburger contained cheese.
On topic, I definitely like the shirt. I can see how some people would think it's an ipod reference...but when I looked at it, I just thought "generic MP3 player". But either way, I don't think people are going to look at this shirt and say "I think I'll buy an ipod!"

The perk to Hardees is, when a customer comes in wanting a cheeseless cheeseburger, you don't then have to put it on the menu. Whereas woot allows their brand of customoron to dictate their shirt sales.

See previous post about how it does not have to be an ipod, and it is definitely not about commercialism.
This better win. GMV 100 times over. Awesome design and symbolism. Make more designs like this and you have a woot career headed your way

Sorry for the delay in response...I imagine a generic mp3 player (from my own cheap-o and the people around me have who also have no-name mp3 players) as much smaller than what's pictured... it would be a little bigger than the size of a lighter, with a horizontal screen and a few buttons. These type or these. The smaller size would have also made it a smaller less important part of the design.
Even though it's simplified, the large size of the player, the screen, the white wire, the click wheel... just says ipod first, even with regular headphones. If the whole player was much smaller too, it would have offset the resemblance a little. Anyway...
AdderXYU wrote:The perk to Hardees is, when a customer comes in wanting a cheeseless cheeseburger, you don't then have to put it on the menu. Whereas woot allows their brand of customoron to dictate their shirt sales.
I completely agree. Why should Woot listen to their customers? I mean that's just stupid, right? And why should the customers even vote for the shirts they prefer? That's just completely selfish and idiotic.
I say we need to get real. Anyone with even half a brain should realize that AdderXYU is the most intelligent being on these forums. Apparently most of the Woot customers don't have that much tissue in their skulls.
AdderXYU knows which shirts are garbage and which ones are good. He should be the one to decide. Woot should rename shirt.woot to adder.woot and hand full control of it over to him.
Then the Great AdderXYU shall sell only those shirts worthy of being sold and all of us morons will be buying the shirts we actually SHOULD be buying.
re: music is life
As what sekiyoku is saying about it not being an Ipod reference- most of the masses here will think Ipod because it looks like one. Wheel, size, screen placement. all of it looks too similar. I dont like Ipods for the sheer fact that a lot of Americans have one and people think Ipods are the only 'good' mp3 player on the market- which is false. A recent Sony Mp3 player is better than an Ipod in terms of portability, sound and design (design is my preference). Overall, I think like this shirt a lot and gave it a vote but wont buy one. This shirt is quite fantabulous.

If you put the white play/pause markers it would detract the attention of the shirt.
True that it could be interpreted as a generic mp3 player- Except- what are the generic MP3 players trying to look like? Definitely not my former Apple Zen

The wire is actually black... the blue on the wire is a highlight (I think you can see this in the full version) Regardless, I already submitted the print ready without any changes, I'm sorry.
Maybe eventually I'll do a design that's absolutely perfect. :p
@ gopro - Again, I'm not saying this is the best mp3 player. It is unarguably the most well known style of mp3 player in this day and age - for example, the Zune and the Sansa are designed to imitate it (with modifications, of course, but still). If you vote, you should buy it though. It does say "I'd want one" ;)
sekiyoku wrote: If you vote, you should buy it though. It does say "I'd want one" ;)
You sure can casually hit the hot buttons, can't you? It's not enough for you to get the vote, you have to cajole the poor kid into buying the shirt too?
It says "I'd want one", not "I'd buy one". not, like the big orange button on actual.woot.com, "I want one." Without the contraction, it says "I would want one." If certain conditions were met. If I had the money. If it weren't just the best in the derby, but also actually good enough to buy. If I could buy it without that purchase preventing me from being able to buy food. If I could buy it, I would.
There's no commitment to buy here, and none implied. geez.
If the kid buys it, I hope they do it the day it goes on sale- you sure don't deserve the extra $2 after that embarrassing rudeness.
Josephus wrote:You sure can casually hit the hot buttons, can't you? It's not enough for you to get the vote, you have to cajole the poor kid into buying the shirt too?
Wow, chill out. That's not what I meant. I don't think people should vote for shirts unless they intend to buy them because it screws up the voting. A shirt should NEVER undersell its vote total - this happening indicates a flawed system. Because I believe this, whenever someone comments that they voted for me but don't plan to buy, I feel a little unsettled. So I have two options - convince them to take back their vote, or convince them to buy the shirt. But asking people not to vote your own design just seems a little weird. So hence my joking comment that he should buy the shirt.
But it's not like he's going to buy the shirt anyway if he doesn't want to. I don't really get your overreaction.
I'm honestly baffled that so many people care this much about the inclusion of the picture of an iPod. I think this shirt is flawless, and when, not if, it gets placed I have every intention of buying at least 2 prints.
I think people really need to get over themselves when it comes to things like this. "Just because I don't like iPods on the merit I'm snobbish and looovvve the counterculture of hating successful products" is a wholely unrelated matter and is an irrelevant point once you read the post explainining it's placement.
This shirt is wonderful, I loovvve it since I'm both an amateur botanist and though I may not love iPods, I am a music buff, and I think this shirt projects that image amazingly. Well done :D

Ummmm . . . his name is Millard. I hardly think he represents the average woot customer. Unless, of course, he and his friends Betty, Beatrice, Agnes, and Pearl (he's a player) are making up a much larger chunk of the base than I thought.
AdderXYU wrote:The perk to Hardees is, when a customer comes in wanting a cheeseless cheeseburger, you don't then have to put it on the menu. Whereas woot allows their brand of customoron to dictate their shirt sales.
Sheerly out of curiousity I want to the ApparelXYU site in your signature. Given the choice of that to woot, I would have to say I'd choose woot any day. Creativity flourishes in Democracy, and the same is true of the novelty t-shirt industry. I mean, I woke up today in a shirt of a little pirate orange, caught myself in the mirror, and was like " :D ". Do you think I would've felt that way in a " The Clownward Spiral" t-shirt? No. Do you think Trent Reznor wouldn't shoot blood from his eyes when he heard about it? I think he and I would have about the same reaction: "Everyone who wears one of these is a tool".

I'll be buying at least 2, probably more. This design is amazing.

sorry that I overreacted. It just came across to me as greedy- getting his vote isn't enough, you're going to shame him into buying the shirt. Your smilie didn't register with me at all- maybe because I've had lots of people smile at me while they were being very unpleasant to me.
Personally, I would never have any problem telling the voters, if you don't like it enough to buy it, then don't vote for it. Still, I don't have the belief you have that a vote is a personal assurance that one truly will buy the shirt. I just think there are lots of legitimate reasons to vote for something without planning to actually buy it. Only a couple of shirts have ever ended up with fewer buys than votes anyway, right? (I'm pretty sure that info comes from the Adder, but it seems likely to be true. I'm certainly not believing that there's a big trend that there are lots of people voting for designs that don't end up buying them.)
[quote postid="3102492" user="gymst"]Ya know, I thought the same thing when I saw this, was about to post my thoughts then saw this comment, glad I'm not the only one.
i'm pretty sure that's a newer zune. the pad looks slightly squarish. Even if it's not i could probably convince myself it was and buy this shirt anyway.
I think it is just me, but this shirt really reminds me of the MtG card "Memory Jar."

The reaction to it being an iPod is childish, and I hope Sekiyoku's design choice gets a bit more credit for it's aesthetic wisdom. He's got a great point, too, in that it's hard to get any more generic in the line of digital music players. The white earbuds might have offered a legitimate source of complaint, but those headphones (monitors, more likely)... wow. Such an organic blend, it's a beautiful piece. <3

If we're going to quibble on such a stupid topic, I'd wager Trent Reznor would have the same reaction to your little pirate orange, as well. I mean, maybe you know Trent better than I, but it's just a hunch that if he suddenly became a hardcore shirt.wooter, he and I would have similar feelings about the sort of stuff that does well here. Regardless of how he felt about anything I ever put forth into the world. He sure as hell wouldn't be buying anything in the fog this week.
Congrats on the shirt selling out! I hope it stays on the reckoning for quite a while!
Re: Music is Life
Just thought you'd like to know, this shirt was spotted on Nickelodeon's "Victorious", worn by character Andre in the 1-hour "Freak the Freak Out" special recently aired.
Re: Music is Life
is this available for purchase anywhere else?
