Re: Of the Moment

I don't know too much about steampunk, but it seemed like there would be a lot of brown and asphalt shirts so I thought it'd be a good time to do an orange one. The idea is based on the those old french fashion illustrations. This is what one might have looked like in steampunk world.

And here's a better look..

It's so pretty and neat looking, Jewel. And it looks great with the orange

I really like your interpretation of the theme! Beautiful

Pretty, and interesting color scheme.. though the color of the shirt doesn't look like the orange in the templates I have, which is a much paler color. This looks almost red.
Woot shirt colors really confuse me, everyone posts them differently.

Anyway, very pretty design.

I really love the colors on this one. It really stands out, especially because all the other designs are brown. Very unique, GMV!

hmm, I feel like this could be a little smaller on the shirt and look a lot better.

Is it possibly screen settings? I used the pantone color woot says to use for the background. Looked at the original file while my tablet was plugged in and it looked orange. Just looked at it now with the tablet disconnected and it looks red, even tho it's the same pantone! Colors are craaaazy.

But the file here still looks orange to me, sorry not to you.

Thanks for the votes guys!

I wish I could vote for this one several times. It's my favorite among the last several weeks worth of entries. I'd love to see a beauty win for a change!

Thanks for the great entry and I hope you win. GMV

I would love this minus the patchy style, which I do not think will print well. Reminds me of RamyB's 'Sea' submission (which is a good thing!).

YES! Orange! I've been looking for a nice orange shirt for a long time, and people rarely give orange a chance...
...although, this looks "clockwork" rather than "steampunk" :-/

Hmm, just went in for 3 Randoms, when I haven't bought any shirts lately (although still checking frequently) so what are the chances of liking them!?! Oh well, couldn't pass up the mystery!
...a number of shirts on teetrade.com

What color would this print as?

If it's any variation of red (dark, red, pale) I'd vote, but if it's orange, i can't do it.

I agree, it would look a lot better if it was resized smaller. What pantone did you use for this shirt? As to clear up the confusion. :]

Seventeen shirts and counting

I feel like things always print a little smaller than the artists show them on the shirt. Maybe it's just me. But for that reason, and because it shows up better in the comp, and mostly because I like it that way, I always show things a bit large.
The orange was Pantone 7417, like woot says to use, and it magically turned to red when I saved it as a jpg. If you know why let me know so it doesn't happen again. Pretty annoying when it does that.

Okay, I love this design, but to play devil's advocate, when people are clawing themselves to pieces with the Ramy/Seki dominance of the fog and the uncertainty of the on-topic-ness of their entries...how is this any different?

I think it's different, but when we're their entries for trying to take elements of a steam punk style without actually being steam punk, how is this different?

This is actually a quality design with artistic integrity.

That's not the issue Twist brought up. There shouldn't be different standards for a design just because it has "artistic integrity".

I like the design too, but in terms of on-topic-ness, I think it falls in the same category as ramy's and seki's pseudo-steampunk designs.

I think Lex was just trying to explain why less people seem upset about it. Sometimes people are willing to overlook things because of artistic quality. Not saying it's right, but I think his point stands.

True enough, I suppose. But a cynical side of me thinks that ramyb and sekiyoku get a lot of guff simply because of their history. They've been a controversial pair since they started submitting here, and while a great deal of their designs certainly deserve some criticism, I can't help but think they get an unfair amount of hate due to their continued and consistent success with those same questionable entries.

But I guess that's going off topic now. Jewel, you said in your first post on your design that you don't know much about steampunk. You should really do some research (I believe just Wikipedia would be enough) as it's a very interesting field. I think you could have come up with an even more amazing design if you had figured out what Steampunk is all about.

Since this is going offtopic, I'll keep it short and sweet. There is this saying about making beds and laying in them.

(Also Jewel, this design really is very pretty.)

A lot of this also has to do with how they handle the criticism. No one likes an egotistical bastard, which is just what these two are; they think they can do no wrong.

But with win after win after win under their belt, one's gotta start wondering how worth it it even is to give it their all when they're going to be cut off at the knees in liu of their tailoring the contest to their favor by shoveling in their personal fanbase for votes and victories. It's just plain not good juju.

Jewel, you're always pumping out quality. I have to agree with eHalcyon though on this one. While this *is* a quality design, I'm seeing a very loose interpretation of steampunk. Truly though, I love the profile.

a loose interpretation IS still an interpretation. just like interpreting the constitution, you can either read it conservatively or liberally, but either is still an interpretation. unless woot gets someone with a PhD in Steampnk'dness to put his/her stamp of approval on every submission, the theme is left interpreted by every individual. although the current fog'd entries are valid interpretations of the theme, there are way better interpretations out there.

Re: Of the Moment

If I could put the love of steampunk in my heart for this derby to make something that true fans of it would want, I definitely would. Unfortunately all I could do was research it, which I did do, and make what seemed on theme to me.

I get what you're saying tho, a lot of the designs just don't "feel" steampunk and if you're really into steampunk then you probably were looking forward to a good shirt that captured the spirit of it. It's disappointing when the winning ones don't. That's how I felt in the deco derby anyways. Btw, I'd still like a real deco shirt if anyone knows of one...

Thanks very much to those that do like the design tho. And those that don't, that's cool too. I just like the attention.

I do like the design. It's beautiful. I'd even say that if everything else withstanding in this derby stays as is (coughlookingatyoufogcough), I would say this beats most of them for being on theme.

my first comment, as well.

i run three steampunk networks and am reasonably-well-connected in the community.

your research shows. the color is creative and fresh - i would have liked to see a cream color or a light beige for summer, but that's enlightened self-interest talking - and anyone who looks at this, doesn't see your standard tubes, gears, cogs, and pipes, and sniffs, "this isn't steampunk," (a) is sadly bankrupt in imaginative faculty, and (b) needs to be reminded that nobody died and made them the arbiter of what is and isn't steamy.

that said, -i- think it is, and i know what the PTERODACTYLS! i'm talking about. good work. got my vote.
