I want this to win solely to spite every single person who uses cute animals and flying penguins in their work. I've missed your shirts Cho. :<
I love the style. Very nice. Deserves the fog.
Re: The Aviator
This is awesome and I hope to see this rise quickly into the fog!

0MG sweet!!!
Re: The Aviator
Awesome!
Re: The Aviator
This is the first jamescho design I think I've had the pleasure to see in a derby since I started getting involved in derbies. Well done!
Re: The Aviator
Awesome job, as always, Cho. Great to see a different style from you this time.
Re: The Aviator
Oh heck yes! I was wondering when you'd be back around... Love this one! GMV for sure

Yeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Nevermind, my dumbass didn't look at the original sketch first to see the steam/smoke.
cobolisdead wrote:Okay, not to rain on your parade here, but what makes this steam punk? It's a wonderful design, and its history and your fandom should guarantee it a print, but it doesn't say Steampunk to me. It reminds me more of Archangel from the X-men

Are you joking dude? This is TOTALLY steampunk.

Ahh, I didn't see any steam there. It's kind of hard to make out with it being black smoke on a black shirt. My bad.
Re: The Aviator
I like it... I really do... But I don't know... Isn't there a no more flying pengiuns rule. I think the rejectionator made up this rule. When I find the link I will update my comments.
Here's the link to the 1st rejected Flying Penguin Shirt
The following is the quote from the Woot Staff:
I'm a reasonable guy. I weigh the evidence. I keep a level head. But I've hit the tipping point.
These irritatingly cute, ill-proportioned, impractical birds and their fruitless quest for flight have caused me nothing but headaches. The last two or three times they've been submitted, they've brought with them controversy and ill will.
They're BANNED. No more. Put it in the virtual book of derby rules.
Rule: 62 section b: No flying penguins, be it of their own volition or through the assistance of any kind of mechanical device. Some things just aren't natural.

Great job James! We miss you around here.

Agreed, I wouldn't even mind having that as the design itself

I like the sketch 10X more than the one on black. There's too much lost in translation from white to black.

Awesome! I can't wait to buy this one. Glad next weekend is payday for me so I can afford it. Good to see you back.

I NEED this for my mom! It HAS to win! First time I've voted in so long, such a worthy entry!

Welcome back James. I hope this wins just to spite everybody and everything Woot LOL. Of course, it is done with your exceptional skill that we have all missed seeing in the Derby.

Adder, where the hell's your post?
I love this! The penguin's attitude with his wings on his hips makes it. Excellent job!
Re: The Aviator
This shirt will be fun to wear. Lots of shirt color showing through for that famous Cho-flexibility, despite the relatively large size of the print.
Re: The Aviator
Appreciate it everyone. A hardcore job, and other work has kept me from here, but i'll try to submit more when there is an opportunity.

Re: The Aviator
I hate that budgetary needs will probably keep me from buying this. The illustration is at once epic and hilarious--it's almost impossible for designs to hit both those buttons at the same time the way this one does.

Budgetary needs... so true! =[
However, it still needs to win, and then come out and then be ten dollars and that's when we need to snap it up and get it before it becomes fifteen and then I really will have to wait...
the design is pure genius imho ^.^

Fantastic!

Taken from an earlier derby:

They're BANNED. No more. Put it in the virtual book of derby rules.
Rule: 62 section b: No flying penguins, be it of their own volition or through the assistance of any kind of mechanical device. Some things just aren't natural.
So there is no inference from this rejection, let it be known that this has nothing to do with the existence of other flying penguin designs or their submission in past derbies. There's no copyright on ideas, just on the execution. In fact, it depresses me that there are apparently so many new and unique ways to execute this painful concept.
This is purely emotional, and an admittedly irrational hatred of the subject matter. I will sleep well tonight knowing the next flying penguin I see will be followed swiftly and unequivocally by a hearty REJECTED stamp. If you test me, I'll enjoy the probation as well."
So....is this going to be rejected or no?

Probably tomorrow, he also uses small lines and halftones. Which is unfortunate, as this is a wonderful design, but I figure Cho was trying to test the Rejectors or something? He made it pretty obvious.
I love penguins, and I love this design. I wish it wasn't on black, as it's just too dang hot in Texas to wear black very often, but I'll have a very hard time not buying this one anyway.
Re: The Aviator
As has already been stated in the comments here, the flying penguin rule was revoked. Which makes sense, because it was an incredibly stupid rule in the first place ;)
Proof:
joelterrific wrote:Alright...I'm over my irrational hatred of this topic. It was a momentary albeit intense hatred of the subject. I owe no one but the penguins who dared to dream an apology. Cho and I will sort it out in the cage.

Ah, your opening comment made me think you were trying to get rejected. I see that is not the case.
Re: The Aviator
id buy it except for the color of the shirt. the black sketch with a black penguin and a black shirt kinda bleeds together and makes it harder to see the fine details.
its kinda hard to see but its a really awesome sketch though.
nbrosas wrote:At first I was like "oh great flying penguins" then I saw who it was and gave it a vote.
If you were actually excited to see a flying penguin, then more power to you, but if your "oh great flying penguins" was sarcastic, then that's a terrible reason to vote for something. =\
@Cho - The shirt comp is a little blurry. In case you missed it, Woot changed comp size to 580x580px.
And as disappointed as I am to see yet another flying penguin (there were several in the Almost derby), I'm glad to see you back. I hope you stick around. ![]()
I have a friend who is an illustrator who also does a lot of flying penguin stuff. I guess that is really trendy right now.
I loved your line art sketch approximately 193.8% more than the finished product. The black and white lines on the final are really blending together and its hard to see the details of where the flying contraption ends and the penguin begins. Its a cute concept though...I am just not feeling it as a shirt design.

This is in response to you and the others about the sketch. Ah yes, the detail will get lost somewhat, but it would've on white or a lighter color too. That is a sketch because it's a sketch, you dont just transfer the sketch as is, you have to use a couple of techniques to get it so woot can print it. Like no value shading, and very fine details. Using halftones in place of gradients, and thicker lines in place of the really fine ones.
The loss of detail also comes from making the design a negative. Meaning, since it's on black - you're only drawing the negatives, letting the black shirt show through where you've "colored in" on white.
So why black eh? Well, as much as you may not like black, there are 10 more people who don't like white, gotta find a compromise at some point yano?
Thank you EHalcyon for the 580x580 comment. Didn't know that. **cough**cough** didn't know woot was getting so frugal with the bandwidth **cough** So if the comp looks blurry it is that reason.
Well dope, thanks for the comments so far, your support, and all that other snuggle bear Gigli (2003), i'd give you hugs n stuff but you know..

Re: The Aviator
I don't think any of the top four fit into the derby rules, but maybe that's just me reading it wrong... No, it's more likely that all four artists got it wrong.
JustJiggles wrote:I don't think any of the top four fit into the derby rules, but maybe that's just me reading it wrong... No, it's more likely that all four artists got it wrong.
Why, praytell, is this not steampunk, other than clearly breaking the Flying Penguins rule that has apparently been redacted.
Re: The Aviator
Anyone think of linux? I did.
HeartlineTwist wrote:Why, praytell, is this not steampunk, other than clearly breaking the Flying Penguins rule that has apparently been redacted.
There appears to be some feeling that steampunk must involve steam (I know that the steam has been pointed out in this already). The problem is that steam isn't a necessity of steampunk style. At the beginning of the derby woot pointed to the wikipedia article, which if I may say has a picture of a steampunk computer, with NO steam (for obvious reasons).
@JustJiggles Oh, and by the way, it is more likely that you got got it wrong, not four different artists.
Re: The Aviator
I'm another one that keeps checking back to make sure this is still here. Great job, Mr. Cho!
Re: The Aviator
as cool as this looks im sorry to say i don't see steam punk in this entry at all B^(
some one said that its steam punk because it had metal wings and that it was powered by steam... sorry but that's not steam punk. Victorian style is no where in this design and steam punk is mostly copper and wood elements using steam and gears to move/power the contraptions.
but at the same time most of the entries in this derby are off the mark so unfortunately this entry much like most of the others wont get pulled.
i had high hopes for this derby but im sad to say i was sorely let down B^(

There are a few more in the top 8 that are more true to the genre. Lets not make this a popularity contest.
Re: The Aviator
Is pretty good but where's the steampunk, if the googles were slightly more elaborate or the wings more mechanical this would be ideal.
Re: The Aviator
Cho, as always, top notch. I love it. I have missed you in the derbies. If this doesn't print, I am going to cry. I WILL be buying.
Re: The Aviator
Does it make any difference to you all that the wings are clearly not feathers? This isn't Icarus Penguin with steampunk-ish goggles. Based on my interpretation, which is based on the fact of how sharp and rigid those "feathers" look, the feathers are metallic, and if this design were in full color, I would imagine some sort of brass-ish.
Although I may be totally off base.
Carissima17 wrote:Cho, as always, top notch. I love it. I have missed you in the derbies. If this doesn't print, I am going to cry. I WILL be buying.
your going to cry? really...?

Re: The Aviator
I think it would shush all the "it's not steampunk" nay-sayers if you maybe used brown to color the leather of his goggles and straps.
As it is, however, it has my vote and I guess I'll be up late Friday to make sure I get mine.
re: the aviator
I just want to add my love for this design. I will be buying it for my boyfriend. He had your Tycoon of Ice shirt and it was involved in a horrible greasetrap accident in the kitchen he works in and was ruined. This shirt may just alleviate his heartbreak over losing the Tycoon.

I'm one of the ones that prefer black -- I wouldn't order it if it was on white. Black shirts look better on most people, and for us females in the audience, our bras show through white shirts.
re: the aviator
This is my first true experience seeing Cho's derby entries. I have to say that I am awe inspired and aspire to be 1/100th the artist he is. The level of detail and the halftones are incredible.
Unfortunately, I cannot give this a vote. Like the entire fog this week after Drakxxx dropped out and was rejected, this is definitely NOT steampunk. I was so looking forward to this derby after it was announced. How disappointing...
Why is Shirt.Woot not enforcing their own theme?! The Art Deco derby had a TON of rightful rejections for not fitting the theme. This one has none. All the rejections have been for use of copyrighted material, direct resub, or not being up to the print specs. WHAT'S THE DEAL?!
Re: The Aviator
I really like the dichotomy here. The color, hope, and motion of the flyer; the lifeless, drooping sputtering of his created wings. This seems to be a lesson of the Bible: we will never get into heaven by our own righteous works.
The wings' angelic look really hits this home to me.

Why? I mean, it's really easy to just say "This isn't steampunk" or "Lul, steam pipes don't equal steampunk," but these comments completely ignore the detail in the contraption part of the design and the execution of that feature in general.
HeartlineTwist wrote:Why? I mean, it's really easy to just say "This isn't steampunk" or "Lul, steam pipes don't equal steampunk," but these comments completely ignore the detail in the contraption part of the design and the execution of that feature in general.
However steampunk isn't about a contraption in the middle, it's a whole style and ethos, simply having a contraption as part of the design doesn't make this steampunk, there's a few tiny changes that could have been made to have make this fit but I would state from several people that love the steampunk genere, this design doesn't quite fit.

I disagree. I think the execution of the wings in conjunction with notable steampunk elements such as the goggles make this fit. So the penguin isn't steampunk...okay. But these are a far cry from Icarus wings. Hell, this is essentially a steampunk jetpack, but instead of just being a jetpack, it is a set of wings because we're essentially talking about a bird. Not only would I argue that this IS steampunk, but I would argue that even the nontopical element is better served by the topical part because it is an incorporation of steampunk into a larger design.
