I actually think it's one of my more wearable illustrations. When I was drawing I was worried it wouldn't work as a shirt, but looking at the shirt comp I'm really happy about how wearable it turned out. Is it the subject matter that you think isn't wearable?

There are many great pictures out there that I'd put on my wall, but just don't translate well to a shirt. This is probably one of them, IMO. The artwork is great, but that "wearability" just isn't there.

Maybe it's just that there's so much going on in the details here. I prefer simple shirts, but can live with more going on as long as it's not really that complicated (Crescent's submission, for example).

Hope my post wasn't taken to be condescending, but I feel like this one may be getting votes based on your reputation more than the design as a shirt. Best of luck, tgentry.

Thought more about it... it's more that there's no situation to wear this shirt. If I'm wearing a BBQ themed shirt, I'd wear it to a BBQ. If I wore this, the reaction that I'd get is, "huh?"

I guess I don't get why you couldn't wear this anywhere other than a BBQ? It's not like a slogan shirt that says "Kiss the BBQ Master" or something. Or a logo shirt with a big grill and hot dog on it. That I could see as something only to be worn while in the act of BBQing. The shirt isn't specifically about BBQing, it's about Charlotte's Web. To me you can wear this kind of literary reference anywhere.

And if the problem is with that the illustration is too complicated, then you should be addressing this to numerous shirts out there: Boots' Green Eggs and Ham, Cho's Evolution, Fable's Burning Marshmellows. I'd wager they each have more elements involved than mine. I think I laid out a complicated scene in a way that it can be read quickly and it sits well on the shirt.

I know there's a group of people here that think that the only good shirt is a graphic design shirt. We hear about it all the time now. Others only like the ones with illustrations and don't want a 'logo' on their chest. Personally I like both. I buy illustration shirts all the time, but I also buy good graphic tees like Kdubb's radio design. A good shirt is a good shirt. I don't really understand why some people harp on illustrations on shirts. As long as they are easy to understand or provide some sort of aesthetic quality that people like, what's the problem?

As far as getting votes simply because of my reputation, I stand by the shirt. In fact I'm pretty proud of it. It makes me laugh, it makes other laugh, and I think it looks good enough that I would wear it. To the movies, to work, at home, at a BBQ. It looks like it won't get printed here, and I'm already looking forward to submitting it to Threadless because I like it that much.

Pretty sure this one's getting votes because of the creative concept and how skillfully it's executed. Plus, some people like illustrative designs, some like simple. Unfortunately everyone is different (when obviously it would be much easier if everyone were just like me).

I can attest that I looked at the design, thought "that's awesome and horrifying at the same time" and voted for it, then saw the creator. Funny and a true story of the end of Wilbur's life.

Re: Some BBQ

This shirt is rocking the votes because it's a grotesque parody of a children's story that most of us were forced to read in grade school. It also brings to mind the ultimate fate of any barnyard animal, in a way putting reality right out there in the open for all to see.

I don't think many shirt.woot artists could actually cram that all into an illustration and make it work. That is why tgentry consistently gets the votes. They're deep maaaaaaaan.

see, that's your problem right there. You have to have a 'situation' to wear the shirt. Just wear the shirt! Anytime! Ridiculous. It's doesn't matter when you wear a shirt (any shirt, not just this one), where you wear the shirt, you just wear it cause you like it. If you have to have a situation to wear a shirt, do you just wear it once then toss it or something?

I LOVE this shirt, got it right away. It's hilarious. My friends will really love it. They always want to see what my shirts say. I can't believe this fell out of the fog. This is the only shirt I want in that's in the top 10 or so.

Wow, thanks for the mention TGentry! I'm quite flattered that you liked my shirt. While I certainly side heavily on the "graphic" side in terms of shirt preference, I also have a great appreciation for the illustration skills of so many on this site (skills that I don't share), and I would certainly wear an illustration shirt if its the right one. Woot owns derby designs for two months after they're submitted; after that the rights return to the artist, and they may or may not chose to try to get it printed somewhere else.

This is assuming that Woot doesn't select the design for one of the do-over derbies... yeah, it's a bit complicated.
