You can either read it from top to bottom or bottom to top...

Top to Bottom:
This little piggy went to market,
This little piggy stayed home,
This little piggy had roast beef,
This little piggy had none.

Bottom to Top: "Life of a pig"
You are born, you eat, you are held in captivity, then someone eats you at a bbq.

I don't get the "top to bottom" description...

It's an old "game" to play with children who aren't wearing their socks. You grab and wiggle their first toe (the pinky toe) and say the first line and on down the toes until you reach the large toe for which you say "And this little piggy Weeee weeee weeeee, All the way home!"

Wait, I see now. The dead pig on top goes to the market. The bars around the pig means he is staying home...

I like the bottom to top explanation better.
