Wow sir, awesome concept!
I love the painting look you did the design in as well.

amazzing!! I WANT IT!
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Mixing fairy tales!?!?
Blasphemy!
Re: The Devil is in the Details
This makes me so happy.
It reminds me so much of all the mythical tales I used to soak up as a child. That section was the first I would visit in the library.
The branch being his arm? And me not realizing it until I saw all the detail? It was an awesome revelation, hoho.
Icemank91 wrote:Mixing fairy tales!?!?

That being said, I love the coloring on this one. I'm always a sucker for anything fairy tale/mythical awesomeness. Great work as always sir.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Well done, the devil just pops out at ya.
absolutely awesome
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Thanks for the comments guys! I was surprised to see it doing as well as it was this morning before the servers died. Hopefully it can pick up steam again. ![]()
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Awesome. Really.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
I love this! So clever!
Re: The Devil is in the Details
I really like this, Travis. Very well thought out.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Subtle and brilliant!
Re: The Devil is in the Details
I'm always drawn to these color schemes, but the full view revealed something even more fabulous.
The little girl is precious...

Creepy! In an excellent sort of way. GMV
Re: The Devil is in the Details
I've actually never purchased a T-shirt from woot and can sadly not vote, but I would definitely make this my first if it gets printed. This is awesome!
Vote!

Wow look at the skyrocket of votes (considering the servers were down)! I really hope this fogs.

Re: The Devil is in the Details
Just incredible really. I will buy this when it wins; despite likely never actually wearing it myself. I just want to own this.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
LOVE IT

This shirt. Is so. Ridiculous.
Tgent for President.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
This is so very kickass that I might even have to buy one... :O
re: the devil is in the details
This is impressive.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Fantastic!
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Wonderful concept! When the day is done and I've looked with sadness at the entries at the top of the Derby, I am always happy that Tgentry is still actually taking the time to come up with a unique idea! Keep them coming, and I'll keep my vote coming! ![]()
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Nicely done again, you're a machine.
brilliant! got my vote!!!
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Too good, really. (gmv)
Re: The Devil is in the Details
I wish the person had more definition so I could tell what in the hell it actually is. Love it otherwise.
tgentry is a forest demon sympathizer!! i knew it
HeartlineTwist wrote:I wish the person had more definition so I could tell what in the hell it actually is. Love it otherwise.
I couldn't add much more detail as the character is only an inch or so high. She does have a head, face, body, two arms, overlapping hands, two legs, red riding hood like clothing. Can you really not tell what she is? Everyone else seems to be able to and you did call her a person first before switching to "it", so I'm guessing you can too, but now I'm kind of confused as to what you're saying... are you actually talking about the devil in the tree?

They're on to us, Lucifern.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
fantastic work
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Did anyone else see little red riding hood and think of the murderous red dwarf from "Don't Look Now"?

No, I'm talking about what I guess is a her. I was sort of just lamenting the detail. I know you don't have a lot of space, and in real life, distance would minimize some of the details on an object/person in the background. I guess the face just kind of kills it for me, but this still has my vote.
I guess my main confusion was whether or not I wanted to call her a she. I mean, yes, she's very evocative of LRRH, but it was sort of hard to read as a girl.
Still love it, though.
re: the devil is in the details
wow!
best design Ive seen to date!
fkn well done!
Re: The Devil is in the Details
wow. your design is great!
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Love it! The green is just beautiful... excellent color overall. GMV!

As a side note, when I buy shirts at woot, I don't pay that close attention to who created them. If it appeals to me, I buy. However I just realized I am starting to get a collection of tgentry shirts. Great work!
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Well done, Tgentry. I'm voting for this! I like the color combinations. Great interpretation of the phrase.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
I really like this but I really wish it wasn't LRRH. The mix of LRRH, Sleeping Beauty, Adam & Eve, and others is just too confusing to wrap my small mind around and have it make sense (to me).
Re: The Devil is in the Details
wow this is just amazing. I would buy this painting and hang it in my house... if it were a painting of course.
ZombieGorilla wrote:Love it! The green is just beautiful... excellent color overall. GMV!
What green?
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Tgentry is overrated. Heck, I'm not sure he's even a real person. I've seen better on bathroom walls.
fleamarketadict wrote:I really like this but I really wish it wasn't LRRH. The mix of LRRH, Sleeping Beauty, Adam & Eve, and others is just too confusing to wrap my small mind around and have it make sense (to me).
No problemo. Originally I approached this as a straight-up Adam and Eve illustration, but there was something about it I thought people wouldn't respond to on a shirt (mainly the two naked people). Also Adam and Eve were tempted by a serpent, not a tree. So I dumped Adam and Eve since they weren't the point anyway.
I thought a child in their place would be interesting. I liked the idea of an small person in a large forest that's coming across something tempting and dangerous and figured people would respond to that better. The red clothing came more from the color limitations - I needed red for the apple, which meant her clothing would have to be red as well. Once I knew that was the case I played it up a little more as being Red Riding Hood because I liked the idea that this character was on the way to somewhere but was being sidetracked by temptation. I tried to dial back the RRH connection a little by dropping the basket, hoping to keep her as the symbol of RRH rather than a scene from that specific story.
Anyway that was the thought process behind it, a mash-up of stories and symbols that hopefully work together. That's cool if it doesn't work for you though.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
This is a really great idea and wonderful execution but after getting my Pandora's Friends and seeing how terribly it printed I am very wary about how well the "lucifern" will show once the shirt is printed. I don't have a good feel for how these two browns print against each other.
I know the common worry is dark on dark but I'm still a little skeptical.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Simply gorgeous.

I think it should be fine. It's very close in tone to a color in Cho's Rocky Raccoon, with a little bit of added yellow green. That one printed very clearly, even with thin lines like this one has:

Sounds good. I'm really looking forward to this one and it doesn't look like you could possibly get stuck with fourth again (as long as I haven't jinxed you).
*knock on wood*

Awesome design, I want one!

I can't believe you lost by just a few votes the last 2 weeks.
Here's my +1 for this week. Hope that helps.

I just finished reading "The Book of Lost Things" by John Connolly that had a good mashup of different fairy tales, myths, and even poetry. It included a whacked out version of Red Riding Hood.
I like the idea of Red and the tempting apple better...much less creepy.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Oooh, very clever indeed. I like the image a lot, but I'm hesitant because I don't really like the color palate. Something about the yellow/brown/green color combined with the red turns me off. I know I'm probably in the minority about the colors, but they just don't do anything for me. Still, I'll vote for it because the picture is so fantastic.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
This is insane. I don't think you'll have to worry about 4th place this week. This will make an awesome print.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
You, TGentry, are a tshirt designer God among tshirt designer peons.
Which is not fair to say about the other great designers I've seen, but I had to say something dramatic, in honor of the brilliance of this design.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
So very, very good. GMV.
It's Harold from Fallout 3!
Got my vote. 99% sure I'll order one if it makes it.
re: the devil is in the details
Well, I am completely amazed at how you mix it up every week. You're easily the most varied artist around here... Oh, and I love this one! GMV and my $10 on Friday(yeah, I said it!).
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Reminds me of a character from "Pan's Labyrinth"
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Though this isn't something I would personally wear, I love the design. The colors are wonderful, the depth of the scene is fantastic and it fits the theme perfectly. Excellent work!
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Wow, this made me gasp audibly! I love it!

Whoa...
When I first saw your response, I just thought you were being sarcastic or funny or something.
But, as I was looking again at the entries on my old iBook instead of my MBP, I noticed that forest in the background appears to be a mustard yellowish color. Whereas on my MBP, it is more of a faded olive green. Which is why I commented, I love muted/faded greens.
I am now curious what the color actually is, they appear very different. My MBP, MacMini and Linux box all are most definately greenish. My iBook it is yellow. The MBP and IBook are calibrated, the others aren't.
Tgentry, if you get a chance, could you post one of PMS numbers used in the background forestry?
BTW, it looks good either way. ;)

It actually is a dark greenish-yellow color that gives the impression of being more green. The brown color it's up against makes the green that's in yellow stand out more. If I had it on a green shirt it would look very yellow. Color effects. Both of the monitors I have show it as looking greenish though, not mustardy. The Pantones are:
619C
618C
484C
450C
467C

Exactly what I thought, I just for got to mention it.
This is one of your best works...I love pretty much everything about this...you really deserve a print.
Someone let me know when I can buy this shirt.
Incredible design. Can't say I like it on a t-shirt though. Sorry, but kudos on the artwork.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
Awesome concept, brilliantly executed. But I don't expect any less from you. :

No, seriously. This is just great. The concept alone is just so creative. +1 and it better print!

Thanks, good to know. Those match up with MBP screen. Since others had commented on it being yellow, I was concerned about the integrity of my screen color.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
I'll guess this was inspired by Brandon O'Keefe's work. Not that it is a copy, but it is approximate in concept.

Actually it wasn't, I've never even heard of the guy until you posted that. Just an unfortunate coincidence I'm afraid, not surprising given how common the story of Adam and Eve is. Type in "devil" and "tree" into google images and something similar is bound to pop up.
Good job Gent!
dankstick wrote:I'll guess this was inspired by Brandon O'Keefe's work. Not that it is a copy, but it is approximate in concept.
Really Dankstick? I'm pretty sure most people don't spend all of their time browsing images on the internet. Most of us don't even do a search for images to rip off before we start our designs. Hard to imagine right?
Good stuff TGentry.

Good stuff TGentry.
He said he didn't see it before and I'm inclined to believe him. My guess was incorrect, but it was an understandable guess in my opinion given the similarity. I don't care what most people/most of us do in any capacity and I certainly believe tgentry is not plagiarizing designs or images.

No worries, it's a legitimate similarity. It's bound to happen doing this week after week. Coming up with the ideas for designs is by far the best thing about submitting to the derby for me. I would never take that satisfaction away from myself by copying some other artist's ideas. If I'm ever inspired by another artist it's usually the style they use, not the concept. I don't even take ideas offered by others, even when they're really good, simply because I enjoy coming up with my own ideas so much. Sooner or later there's bound to be some overlap with them though, it's just the law of probabilities. I think the last big one I had was with the little guys carving snowflakes, which actually turned out to be very similar to a Threadless shirt. That's life.
Re: The Devil is in the Details
your coming first for sure. congratz on an awesome design. deserves the win.

Amazing. If this were a print I would buy it in a heartbeat - it would look great in my house. Hope it wins...
