Re: fedora
Stunning!
Rejected because: After reviewing the print-ready files, the lines are too fine to print. In a PSD, you need at least a 20px brush on 300 DPI.
Great job with the shading. I think it's the right amount of colors. Really cool design.

I can't really tell what's fully going on here, but I think it's this:

stunningly bad. and rather lazy, dont you think?
marmls2m wrote:stunningly bad. and rather lazy, dont you think?
Lazy depends on who is doing it. I think it would take me a while to do that design with the textures nicely differentiated like are.
Doesn't GMV though because I wonder about how well it would print, and I also just don't see myself wearing something like that.
Re: fedora
no gradients are used. there are 4 shades of grey on black.
This design is to represent the old-time detectives, and I was trying to make the design itself feel mysterious.
as for lazy? This isn't an easy style to draw. It takes a long time to make the textures look nice and subtle.
The lines themselves are large enough to print, so I don't think there would be any problem with that.
okay, enough defending. thanks for the people who like my design!

As always, I'm a fan. I am concerned about the things mentioned above: the similar shirt on threadless, and the printability (even though you just addressed that). Of course, if the first thing is an issue, the second one won't matter any longer.

when i say lazy, i mean lazy in conceptualizing. i mean, its a fedora...
yeah, thats it. granted it could be seen as a symbol of noir, it could also be seen as a symbol of prohibition, or mobsters, or FDR. or the FBI during the 1940s and 50s. im sorry, but there is just no way in hell i would ever want to wear a shirt with a simple illustration of a fedora on it.

If it was just a fedora, I'd agree with you, but to me the bit of upturned collar brings it into the noir category, without a doubt. I never would have thought anything else.
Re: fedora
I love this one. I am a mystery buff and I would wear this proudly. GMV.

But when I see this, I don't think mystery at all. I think the invisible man, which I suppose you could say is a mystery but there's not really anything very mysterious about him. He's invisible. Case closed.

Besides all that...
This will print terribly!
Edit: Or maybe the point is for it to be invisible.
Re: fedora
Awesome work- the detail is incredible. I bet Mickey is hiding under that hat somewhere. :-)

Come on, you forgot to mention that the Threadless version is way better. Seriously, I kinda want that shirt now. Not this one though.
theghotiman wrote:Come on, you forgot to mention that the Threadless version is way better. Seriously, I kinda want that shirt now. Not this one though.
this is as bad as most of the daily shirts.
AdderXYU wrote:I can't really tell what's fully going on here, but I think it's this:

It might be inspired by the threadless dwg, but it really is too difficult to tell. Which leads me to belive that this will not print well.
Re: fedora
It has a totally different feel from the shirt at threadless, to me. My only concern is, as already mentioned, how well it will print.
Re: fedora
if you look at the design again it seems like he's not an "invisible man" but more of a shadowy figure who's face can't be seen. that's what it looks like to me.
of course it depends on if that was actually what the artist was going for.
Re: fedora
This looks anything but simple. It looks very 3-dimensional, I'm sure that's not easy to do. I love it. Only thing that could make it better, would be rain.
Re: fedora
I LOVE old timey hats, but I think it's a smidge odd to have just a cool hat and a coast on a shirt. sorry.
Kiwii wrote:I LOVE old timey hats, but I think it's a smidge odd to have just a cool hat and a coast on a shirt. sorry.
Coats, even.
Re: fedora
Wouldn't it be better to just have the actual hat on your head rather than on your shirt?
MaryESP wrote:Will it print?
The more pressing question would be: will it chaff?
Wahahahah...
(Sorry, I make chocolatey jokes for a living, that's why I'm so broke?)
Re: fedora
this is an amazing design. I would buy it in a heartbeat and hope it does well. Kudos.
Re: fedora
Favorite one by far.
Far from lazy in concept and execution, as well. It boils the mystery/detective/noir genre into a very elegant symbol. This could be a book cover.

Art is in the eye of the beholder. ;)
Re: fedora
I think the design is well done, however I don't think it works the way it is for a tshirt, it needs more to it, as it is, had the design not said fedora, it probably would have taken me ten minutes to figure out what it was.
Pros:Nicely detailed, good idea
Cons:needs more contrast between design and shirt(I know it needs to be subtle but not that subtle), needs more to the overall design

Usually a black t has a short life (washing really degrades the crispness of the color; course not washing brings up some social issues. . .) but this is tooooo good! GMV. Would buy in a flash.
theghotiman wrote:Come on, you forgot to mention that the Threadless version is way better. Seriously, I kinda want that shirt now. Not this one though.
Yea, I feel bad agreeing with you because you can tell this would take a good bit of time to draw out. It's really good work but I dunno...just lacking. Plus I really hate wearing black shirts, they make me look fat and a bit emo. Now I'm off to go cut myself and walk upstairs without getting winded this time, wish me luck!
Re: fedora
Did we ever figure out how this fits "Mystery" at all?
kylemittskus wrote:Did we ever figure out how this fits "Mystery" at all?
....its the invisible man one of the greatest mystery novels of all time
Mrspott wrote:....its the invisible man one of the greatest mystery novels of all time
Right. Except since the novel exists, and we know who the character is...
It fits the category of "Mystery" because the man is literally mysterious. Perhaps he's actually invisible, or perhaps it is just too dark to see his face beneath the shadow the fedora: we don't know.
Personally, I like it, though how well it will print is a bit hazy.
Re: fedora
We'll have to have production review this print file. It's quite possible this will be too fine to print.
Re: fedora
This shirt is ridiculous. It looks like you got a weird bleach stain on it. Or like it has been faded in the sun.
Not an ounce of me understands why this is so popular.
joelterrific wrote:We'll have to have production review this print file. It's quite possible this will be too fine to print.
Thanks Joel. I just sent the artwork in. I really don't think there will be a printing issue. It's no finer than halftones that have been printed in the past. And my line-weight is no different than a shirt you printed called "deforestation" which came out perfect.
The vision for this shirt isn't to come out bold and colorful. It's meant to fade into the shirt, which gives it the mysterious look.
Thanks for the support from the non-haters!

True arteeest. Thank only the positive critics and ignore the rest of your potential buying community.

Full disclosure: I didn't vote for this design. I won't buy it. I think it's creative and fits the theme but does not come out well on a t-shirt.
That being said, your comment was uncalled for Kyle. You are clearly not part of the potential buying community. Demanding attention is juvenile. The artist has been respectful, responded to Woot's request, and has not allowed him/herself to get dragged into sniping. Please increase your personal level of discourse. Your comments do not benefit the site.

I completely disagree. The people on the site are his potential buying community. The criticisms that have been posted about how the shirt will print, possible artistic inspiration from another shirt, etc. are not positive criticisms, but are constructive nevertheless. However, the artist excluded the "haters" who for the most part have constructive things to say.

Sad to see this drop out of the fog. I was looking forward to getting a new shirt this week.

ugh, get back in the fog you amazing thing you!
IncurableHumanist wrote:ugh, get back in the fog you amazing thing you!
It did.
And with this one and the bunny one going back and forth, the other three look like they're printing which is GREAT, don't care much, and absolutely terrible, respectively.
I hope this one makes it back into the fog. This is easily my favorite from the derby.
Re: fedora
I really love the touch of mystery with this shirt. I was away this weekend and unable to design, but when I saw the category, this idea immediately popped into my mind. I think it totally captures the concept of mystery. While other shirts do a good job telling the story of a mystery, this one actually gives off the feeling and emotion of mystery. Great job Ski! Come on people, get voting for this great shirt!
Re: fedora
This shirt is freaking awesome. It totally fits the theme. I would buy it in a heartbeat.
I LOVE this shirt! This is awesome in my opinion and it totally needs to be back in the fog. Great sketch style and subtlety. Best shirt I've seen from woot in months

well it definitely was smaller than a 20 pix brush. good to know for the future.

Yeowch! What a bummer, especially after being at the top for so long. :-(
I do have to echo your comment though... prolly good for all of us to know.
skirochester wrote:well it definitely was smaller than a 20 pix brush. good to know for the future.
20 pix seems excessively thick. I've seen a lot of everything with lines seemingly thinner than that. :-\
Re: fedora
well great! with this one gone there isnt an entry remotely close to the fog that i would want to wear/buy B^(
i also agree 20 seams a bit thick B^(
g8skey wrote:20 pix seems excessively thick. I've seen a lot of everything with lines seemingly thinner than that. :-\
20 px at 300 dpi works out to less than 2 millimeters. It's not that thick.
eHalcyon wrote:20 px at 300 dpi works out to less than 2 millimeters. It's not that thick.
maybe not but I feel like a lot of Draxx and my designs go thinner on lines often.
