Re: Hanauma Bay
Is this a tattoo representing the Bay? I love the illustration, but I wouldn't guess it was a tattoo, just a really, really sick illustration.
Re: Hanauma Bay
I wish I could vote for this one hojillion times.

It isn't really representing the bay literally, I just thought the name fit the finished art so I went with it. In looking at octopus tattoos I found a lot done in a Japanese or Hawaiian kind of style, with those kind of waves and linework.

I love the colors on this! I wish I could go there. GMV!!!

I love it and it's great art, but it doesn't evoke "Oh that's a tattoo themed shirt." as my first reaction. I like it, but I'm afraid it'll get rejected. ![]()

Oh, ok, cool. I love hearing about the artist's inspirations and thought processes. Just my two cents, but this would have been sick if you used half-tones to kind of do the shading that tattoo artists use. In my opinion, that would have put this over the top. I wish I could illustrate like you and many of the other talented artists on this site. Great illustration.
Re: Hanauma Bay
Pardon my ignorance of the subject matter, but what about this is a tattoo, other than "This could totally be a tattoo"?
cobolisdead wrote:Pardon my ignorance of the subject matter, but what about this is a tattoo, other than "This could totally be a tattoo"?
Octopus, flowers, and Japanese style waves, all very common tattoos. I think I did it in a very familiar style, and with commonly used colors, I'm actually kind of surprised people aren't getting the tattoo aspect of it.
Re: Hanauma Bay
Excellent color choice, sir. I like the vibrancy.

Thanks JK. I really hope woot sees the "tattooness" of this, I've seen tats like this all over the place. The themes are all very common as are the colors and the flowy linework. I'm sure it's getting tattled on galore, but I stand by it as a "tattoo" and not just an illustration.

If I go out right now and get this as a tattoo, would that help?
I love it, and I might do that anyway!
Re: Hanauma Bay
Between the hibiscus (hibiscuses?) and Hokusai-ish lineart I had no problems making the tattoo connection. I really like the vivid colors on here, great palette.

Just because there is a hibiscus, or in general, a koi fish, or skull, doesn't make it on theme in my opinion. Yes it is a popular tattoo element, but I am sure you can find just about anything that has been used in real tattoo. I have nothing bad to say about the design itself. I actually think it is very well done, and vibrant with the color choices. But what do I know, my arse is gonna get rejected probably anyways.

I think with there being not just one but several popular tattoo elements done in a style that approximates the style these elements are often done in means it is very much on topic. I'm not really worried that it will be rejected so much as surprised that people don't see it as a tattoo. But that's just me and woot might not see it my way. Time will tell.
Re: Hanauma Bay
it's Phil the octopus! i see him down there at Hanauma all the time. x]
very nice. definitely tattoo-y.

I'm not sure how many wooters spend time in tattoo parlors....
The top designs are mostly about tattooing not tattoos themselves so this is kind of a standout in that respect. Preferences may differ but in California this style is incredibly popular and it is every bit as much on topic as the biker tattoos. For that matter, the only thing that distinguishes Draxxx's (which is also on topic) from this is the gun.
I don't see woot rejecting but if you are really concerned I would resub and list your influences in the title (japanese/hawaiian/etc) and it should be perfectly fine.
Re: Hanauma Bay
Excellent color, I love it. I definitely saw the tattoo connection as well. GMV, hope it prints.
Re: Hanauma Bay
Excellent work, as usual. I hardly ever buy shirts anymore, but I'm in for one if it wins.
Re: Hanauma Bay
Very nice. The colors are great, too.

Thanks Kdeuce! I forgot you're from Hawaii. Your DBH entry is sick. Very impressive. Good luck with it.

tattling is for children. i was worried woot would reject it, but i could care less if it's a tattoo or not, i want the shirt. love the design and especially the color selection. [all i ever do it Mitchell about dark shirt templates, but this one fits]
Re: Hanauma Bay
My ex-bf has bold, colourful sleeves that fall in right along with the type in your entry. In fact, I designed a few for him. There's no reason why this should be rejected, but this is woot after all. Good luck. It's a beautiful piece.
Re: Hanauma Bay
I'm asphalted out & would prefer it on another color (white, maybe? woot heresy, I know), but I'll gladly buy it if it prints. Damn you ;) Best of luck.
Re: Hanauma Bay
Fantastic work as always Mr. Gentry. The Octopus pops right off the design. Great colors and illustration.
Re: Hanauma Bay
The colors really make this shirt. Great job!

Exactly
Lord knows woot has rejected any number of shirts for faulty reasons, and kept any number of shouldnt-be-shirts that did the same things. But this should evoke tattoos to anyone who has ever seen a tattoo with more than one color. The palette alone made me think of a full color tat.
I'm forever amazed at what wooters can't see. This is very well done, tg.

I love how you change your views week to week depending on the artist. If this were someone you did not like you would be all over this saying it's not a tattoo. Tiny state, tiny mind, tiny penis.
Re: Hanauma Bay
This is gorgeous, I love it. Wonderful, wearable, WANT!
Re: Hanauma Bay
Like everyone, I like the colors, but I don't think I would wear this. GMV on a great design though.

So you're saying I should presume all things are either good or bad? That would be incredibly narrowminded.
I judge every entry equally. The fact is that if people do horrible work consistently, I call them on it, and if people do good work consistently, I praise them for it. That's not changing one's mind. That's being honest with oneself.
And seriously, I'd love to know what other artist has done a piece like this, to which I stated it wasn't tattoo-like. Yknow, since that's basically your argument. Otherwise you're simply upset that I'm praising people who earn my praise, and ragging on people who earn my contempt.

Ooh ooh! Adder's contempt should be an "earned" achievement over at Shirt Derby Stats! I bet I'd have at least 3 by now....maybe more.

I'd call them worst losers, except that often some of the worst shirts in the derby win.
Re: Hanauma Bay
After a 40-odd derby hiatus I am back and I'm glad to see you're still producing sweet stuff. GMV. I entered an octopus design as well but I need to tap your brain someday to get some tips on line work. You make it look effortless and it is like pulling teeth for me sometimes. Best of luck maintaining fog status.
Re: Hanauma Bay
VIVID!!
I love how the colors pop off the shirt, Travis. Very nicely done!
Re: Hanauma Bay
Not sure I'd wear it, but very nice use of color.
Re: Hanauma Bay
I drove past Hanauma yesterday and they're tattooing this on tourists for free. Nice one TG.
cobolisdead wrote:Pardon my ignorance of the subject matter, but what about this is a tattoo, other than "This could totally be a tattoo"?
I was thinking this same exact thing. While I do love the illustration and think it would be a great shirt, this goes exactly with the statement of "This could totally be a tattoo". If I put a cool tribal symbol together you could say the same thing that "it has many tattoo elements", but that still fits the statement of "This could totally be a tattoo". Rules are meant to be broken I guess. But whatever it's just my opinion, I still think it's a great design and should win based on that alone, not the theme.
*edit. Nevermind, now that I think of it, most of the derby entries would fit into this same issue.
DeadFrog wrote:Ooh ooh! Adder's contempt should be an "earned" achievement over at Shirt Derby Stats! I bet I'd have at least 3 by now....maybe more.
That would be hilarious.
Sorry tg, I don't see "Tattoo" either. It doesn't really look like any that I've seen. But then, most of the people I hang out with don't have tattoos so I'm not really knowledgeable in the area, and thus I can't call "off topic". Good luck!
Re: Hanauma Bay
Your design must have some clear connection to tattooing, tattoo culture, or recognizable tattoo styles.
This is a recognizable style if you have spent any time looking at tattoo design, in a tattoo shop, or around other people with tattoos. Can we be done with the off topic nonsense now?
Re: Hanauma Bay
My favorite of this derby so far. Did you spill your pantones all over this shirt or what?
Re: Hanauma Bay
How the h-e-double-hockey-sticks is this not back into the fog? Maybe you should have put a hidden dragon in the rock formations.
Excellent work, TG! Completely on theme.
Re: Hanauma Bay
i really like your color choices! i'm a fan of the dark gray and the orange and purple really pop. as my son said "nice occapuss"

I must admit that early on I was skeptical about the design being a tattoo. I am from upstate NY and I have never seen a tattoo like that. Looks like it is more of a West coast surfing culture tattoo. That being said, it is a shame yours isn't in the fog, it is one of the more visually appealing, and graphically-wearable shirts in the derby. Good luck!

ditto. would be good on blue maybe. put it on blue!!! please
Vote for this so I can buy it!

I love this style of tat, and this is a excellent example of it.
