Always let them know who you roll with! Get on with your bad intergalactic self!
I intended to do something "tribal" and kept coming back to the play on words of R2D2 and tattoo. Hope you like it!

Would've liked it had you worked some aurabesh (the star wars written language) intot he design, but all the same:
GMV!

If I knew it (or about it), I would have. I am definitely a fan of Star Wars (Episodes III-VI), but not too hardcore. Sounds like a missed opportunity on my part!
Re: R2Ta2
I don't see this getting past the Rejectonater, what with the R2D2 Tattoo on 3P0 arm and the Trademarked Rebel Alliance symbol.

That is always a possibility, and certainly one that I am aware of. I hope that it is viewed as parody (which was the intent). I struggled with good ideas this week, so I had to go with the only decent idea I had. We shall see. I can always re-sub without the Rebel Alliance symbol if that is an issue. Hopefully humor and parody will win out.
Re: R2Ta2
Awesome idea. Star Wars-like fonts would make it perfect. BTW, how do I vote for this?

You have to have purchased something from woot.com or shirt.woot.com before to be eligible to vote. Once you do, you'll see a button to vote (assuming you're logged in).
Re: R2Ta2
Fanatstic job with the design - it looks awesome... but as a shirt, a little too much of a disembodied arm on a shirt for me to wear I think.

Oh come on, who doesn't like wearing random body parts on their shirts!
Re: R2Ta2
Take a look at the other contenders quickly... (waving hand) "These are not the shirts you are voting for."
this really is the most uninspired design yet. sure star wars gets votes, and probably even sells shirts to the morons, but it's just sad.
NICE!!!!! R2D2 4Life, love it! Probably will get rejected......but it's still great
Re: R2Ta2
GMV although I do fear it may be rejected. Hope not. Great execution and concept. Thanks for your comments too. Much appreciated.
Re: R2Ta2
is it just me, or is something fishy going on with the hand? I immediately thought c3po with the arm itself, but the hand just looks wrong to me...
Re: R2Ta2
Probably the funniest concept I've seen for this derby so far
, GMV!

Thanks... that was the whole reason I ended up doing the shirt. Keep the votes up, it will at least help me have a shot at an honorable mention.
Love Star Wars and this is a great concept but it's pretty unwearable. Who wants to walk around with a giant, disembodied gold arm across their chest?

I'd say that a large portion of star wars fans would. :d

that doesn't make it good design, though.

Pretty sure I didn't allude to whether I thought it either would or would not make a "good" design, however people choose to define that term.
I was just commenting that it would probably appeal to a large group of Star Wars fans simply because of the reference.

And I'm simply saying that "appealing to a fanbase" is a horrible reason for something to exist. It should have some sort of merit outside that fanbase.

i finally understand why the red microphone got printed...
it was a wearable design that worked on a shirt color that isn't as common as all hell..
give me some rare colors Mister Dubbs.

I agree that this isn't a great design. Compositionally it is strange. Like I said earlier, I was lacking for ideas and kept coming back to the play on words. I was more concerned with getting it done in time for the Friday launch then spending a ton of time concepting more. I didn't originally design this to capture the Star Wars votes, it was all about word-play. Admittedly weak wordplay at that. I could have very easily not submitted anything, but you never know what might appeal to people. My microphone was a spur-of-the-moment quick design that I submitted late and never thought would have a chance.

Perhaps. However, people on this site are very strange about colors. If you don't do something on black, brown, navy, etc., you get 100 posts telling you that they would never wear that color shirt. I bet half of the posts about my Trees entry (on light blue) were to complain about light blue. Sometimes its a tremendous risk trying to use a less common shirt color, and with $1000 on the line, unless the color makes the shirt a lot stronger, you have to think twice about color choice.

Oh sir, there are plenty of things that exist simply because of a fanbase. Examples are as follows:
1. "World of Warcraft" T-Shirts. Who else would buy those?
2. Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Twilight Series.
3. Any popular catagory from existence.
Who else besides their captured audience or in this case "Fan base" would actually purchase any memorabilia from specific entities? There are plenty more examples out there to back this up. Targeting a fan base with out any outside merit is perfectly okay. This is woot ya know, not Bloomingdales where image is everything.

I'm not going to get into the full implications of how wrong you are. Star Wars, the movie, would still exist without the huge fanbase. The "prequels," maybe not, but I wager that the first three would exist regardless, or at least the first one. I am not a star wars fan, but I can appreciate the films for what they were. As such, plenty of things exist for quality, and gain fans from it. Still, beside the point.
But what I will note is that these things existing DOES NOT make them OK. Which was my point. If you're creating something just to market to a huge fan contingency, you're creating something with no real worth. All you're saying is that other things have existed for that reason. It doesn't mean that reason is suddenly right.

Let me ask you this. Who ever created something and thought to themselves, "I don't want people to follow this peice or potentialy purchase it now or anytime in the future". Please keep in mind that this is a T-shirt derby. A contest to see who can get the most votes. The most votes would mean tailoring your designs to a specific audience. Even art that was not intended to have any viewers will end up with an audience. Then someone mimics that niche and markets to that "fan base". Adder, this is not the site to preach about creating "real worth" without a specific targeted audience. Simply put, you design for the votes. Win and get paid. Nothing more.

Why settle for that way of thinking though? There are ways to be aware of your target audience and still push your design a bit out of those boundaries.
We all like a good parody every now and then, definitely myself included. I'm just saying artists don't have to settle for the mindset of designing just for votes, and there's nothing wrong with people wanting this site to be more than that.
