Re: Derby Winners = Bags of Win

I spent over 10 hours on this, trying to succinctly summarize each derby winner. I realize this might be very close to being rejection fodder, but I hope it is considered as my homage to all that have come before. I did my best to capture the essence of each winner, without tracing or excessively referring to each entry, to do my best to make it my interpretation, in two colors of ink. As a frequent entrant of derbies, this is my ode to all the best of the last 106!

It does, however, bring back so many horrible memories. Bags of win? Well, they won. But they were more Bags of Fa.il.

The interesting thing about going through all these was seeing the discussions of each winning design (at least, when they started linking designs with discussion threads).

There were some where there were ethical or legal issues raised (ones that were supposedly tracing suspects, or clip art suspects). But these all got 1st, for whatever reason, and were printed after much speculation and waiting. I didn't want to influence my design by this though.

Some thoughts though: Cho, Ramyb, tgentry, cmdixon still grace us with their excellent artwork, but there are long gone artists I wish were still here. If woot hadn't come down hard on text in the last minute, I was gonna put the artist name/ref in the circles.

It's sad how nothing ever changes, isn't it.

Also, there is something wrong with your final paragraph. For a clue, consider this: Eric Clapton, Soulja Boy, Paul McCartney and Aretha Franklin are all still making amazing music.

Great job on all the micro pics. I've done program icons before so I know that the size of the image does NOT reflect the time it takes to make. Its challenging cramming a recognizable image into a tiny space. I'm not a huge fan of the face in the middle but it does fit the "woot" theme well. I've just never liked that face. So I guess I'll start opening woot bags by punching through the face, pulling the shirt out and admiring the rest of the bag. Fantastic work on all the drawings. Good luck.

Thanks! Yeah, little drawings are hard to do with 1 pixel lines to make sure they're printable and still recognizable. The 3 ink colors was also tough.

Yeah, I needed something for that space. I originally had the smile IN the woot ! symbol, but I assumed that would get rejected, so I played around until I got something that was passable. But, it's really funny how many shirts get printed with that smiley on it that AREN'T winners...

In addition to that, it is also derby-'centric'. Certainly from our perspective shirt.woot is all about the derby, but the derby comprises less than half of the shirts (designs) sold.

Thanks for the comments folks! I am very happy people like the design. Took a lot of effort. I also admit that as we go on, this will be a historical footnote hopefully for the next 100 derbies plus.

I think it makes an excellent bag for shirts, but I'm biased. I am honored to be in the same company as tgentry and krisrobinson this derby, two of my fave designers.

Valid concern if you let that bother you...but I just look at it as a tribute to the derby history.
SkekTek could be starting something here...they could release a new bag each year with the past year's derby winners on it. lol

enlighten me as to why you can't see yourself getting this in the mail? It's not like you're buying the bag, you're buying the t-shirt that's in the bag.

When you want to buy something from other sites do you first email them to ask what the package is going to look like just to make sure it's something "you can see yourself getting in the mail"?

Woot doesn't have to put anything on their bags, this is just something extra they're doing. If this is the design chosen to be printed on the bags, and you decide to stop buying shirts from this site because of it, then i think you have a much bigger problem... but honestly, i think you'll be fine.

Thanks folks for your kind words. Yes, this is a labor of love. Especially since I did the last 20 with a broken wrist (damned triquetrum!) Ouch.

Anyone who has been on EBW boards or in the derby from the start knows this is my home. I occasionally design elsewhere, but this is where I design, buy my shirts, etc. I like it here. This is my homage to the derbies...

This entry reflect what is the best and worst about the competitions here on shirt woot.
I appreciate all the time spent on this design and the concept is great! But the exectuion is lacking a bit. Some circles really capture the idea, and others seem kinda phoned in... Did you consider each circle represnting the derby theme rather than the winner? It just seems to pander a little too much for my taste.
The best thing, if the concept is strong enough, low skill level can still create a win. Keeps the playing field leveled.
The worst thing, if the concept is strong enough, low skill level can still create a win. Does not always encourage improvement.
I am not meaning this as insult at all. Just my humble opinion/observation.

I 100% agree. I actually wish people would stop voting for this. I really appreciate the sentiment offered on the bag (as well as the obvious work put into it), but I just don't feel that it looks very good. I would be way more excited to get over 10 other bags in the mail before this one. "The Woot Frame", "Woot Bot", "Revolution is Now", There is Something Awesome in Here", "What Lurks Inside", "Woots Little Helpers", The Tee Truck is Here", "World of Woot", and "The H.Q.", just to name a few, are all superior in quality and execution IMHO.

Yeah that won't happen... I see your point, but since this is a derby to pick what bag we would like to get in the mail, I can't help but be a little disappointed when a bunch of bags I really love are getting passed over for something like this. It's not a huge deal, and I am not really upset or anything... I am just a little disappointed. Pretty much the same as I am during most derbies when I see some designs sitting just outside the fog being kept out by Rabbits in Costume.

I have to agree with KIDA26. I like the concept, but the quality isn't all that incredible. The layout really throws the whole thing off for me. Too much empty space in the middle. It also kind of reminds me of the Wu Tang symbol.
