Now this isn't a copyright issue because it's parody. See the difference? No need to get upset at people who are just pointing out the rules.

The concept of parody is a thin line, but a definite one. you can see it walked between the two pieces. One was blatantly cookie monster, with the concept very loosely alluded to. This doesn't show cookie's most distinguishing features, while also taking the concept itself and highlighting it. Parody requires a strong, logical twist, sometimes of humor, sometimes just of juxtaposition.

That doesn't make something safe from rejection or copyright allegations, of course, but respecting parody and understanding parody is always best for any designer who might feel ripped off if someone took their own work for their own profit. Parody is snarky homage in many ways.

Much better suited to the theme this time around... as well as a much more appropriately labeled parody. Good luck.

re: the binge

Adder's right on. The first one kept at least one major distinguisher of the copyrighted character in question (namely the eyes, though as I stated before those boggle eyes are used on lots of characters). Here we have a lump of blue fur that dosen't even show a head, and one arm. Also the character would never be found in a situation as depicted. As an added twist I threw in the missing cookies image on the milk carton for extra kicks. This could be any of a number of characters, from multiple creative universes if you exclude the props around him (Seriously how many monsters do you know that are blue, think about it) It could even be a bigfoot with a bad coloring job...

There's nothing wrong with working there, I always wanted to be a muppeteer and I can with great pride do almost all the original muppets voices (well too I might add). You never get quite such a big reaction when you sing rainbow connection or being green in kermits voice at a karaoke bar... now I've shared too much

Well done. The joy of a parody is cleverness. Any jerk complaining: If you wore this shirt I guarantee you'd get questions like “Where did you get that awesome shirt?!” and a dozen compliments... Hell, maybe people would finally even like you.

I liked the other shirt, but I find this version of cookie monster a little creepy for some reason (I think it doesn't look the head shape I'd imagine so it doesn't really look like him to me), but I do find the shots of milk pretty funny! Nice job with a redo of the idea!

That was intentional (the head part, and he actual has shoulders which cookie monster doesn't have), I didn't want to give them any leverage to reject this one

I'm pretty sure that this is not only going to print, but that it's also going to get first place.

Congrats on a big winning idea, this rejection might have been the best thing that happened to you. Love the new version, I think it's more interesting and funnier than the original. I expect an early sellout with this shirt.

Good luck, you should be golden as long as this tiptoes past the rejectionator's bad mood this week, but I can't see a reason for any issues anymore.

Cool, I couldn't find anything in the FAQ's that said that about the shirt. The problem is if I have to buy at 15 if it sells out half my pay on it will go to getting them for my family also this is a side question but how do you do the mark up in a message to have images in a separate frame. I want to put some images in my text without having them stacked? Help is appreciated

Ahhh ok. Makes more sense why you did it, and it definitely looks less like cookie monster because of it... in fact he looks a little bit like he could be harry monster (hairy monster? not entirely sure of his name) because of the shoulders. Still, smart I guess, to add the shoulders then, though a bit creepy;)

I'm normally not a fan of shirts with known characters, but this is well done, with humor that goes beyond the character itself. Even if you had no clue who the blue guy was it would make sense, which is what's missing in some of the other parady shirts where if you don't know the original you absolutely don't get the joke. Obviously, someone has overindulged. I hope he finds a good 12-step program.

Great changes. The before and after for this design is the prefect example of unlicensed merchandise vs. parody. A rule of thumb I use is (disregarding quality of execution) "Would the producers of said character ever make something close to this shirt?" If "yes" then it's just unlicensed merchandise. I can imagine licensed merch like the old version of this shirt, but def. not like the new one.

Regardless, there are a TON of unlicensed merchandised shirts floating around these days. Woot got pretty close with the Mario shirt last week- I'm glad to see them take a step back by rejecting the old version of this one.

I agree, like I said on the old design after the rejection, it was more of an experiment to see where Woot would draw the line. I saw that the subject matter was very popular so then I made a "real" shirt, I just didn't expect it to be as popular as it is.

It's not super-obvious in the comp because of the "no text" rule this week. I have a feeling if (don't want to jinx it by saying "when") you print, it will be much more obvious on the shirt and people will get a kick out of it.

A couple things about that.
1. Its parody and Cookie monster would never do shots
2. I made sure that beyond the blue fur you wouldnt be able to see any distinguishing marks (eg boggle eyes, mouth)
3. I changed his physical form and gave him slight shoulders (Cookie monster doesn't have those) and changed the head shape. Honestly with his eye placement on his head you'd see them even with his head down (trust me I had them in there then ditched them)
4. If you took away the props (glasses, crumbs etc) it would be much harder to identify him (how many blue monsters are there, the answer is lots)
5. Cookie crumbs aren't copyrightable, and Cookie Monster doesn't usually use milk because, well that would get really messy and smelly on set.
6. Go to youtube and look up Family Guy Cookie Monster. Nuff said
