Re: Shouri
knew it was kdeuce the moment I saw it. It looks like a sequel to your samurai rage (but not in a bad way)
Rejected because: Sorry to reject this late, but I'd been trying to get the images fixed in the other sale. Too similar to a shirt we've already printed.

Re: Shouri
i was gonna do a grungy samurai one but then i realized you would do one and it would be so much better than mine.
and i was right! looks awesome.
Re: Shouri
Yep, knew it was you when I saw it. great samurai... better then your other one in my opinion. This will get many votes I am sure... I am sure it will get many troll comments too.
Re: Shouri
I love this shirt, the only part that bothers me is the big red spot, it's too flat and bothers me for some reason.
Re: Shouri
there are so many samurai/ninja shirts that i want to buy in this derby (yours included). hopefully some will print
Re: Shouri
I love the styling that you used for this samurai. I'm curious, what does the kanji say?
Re: Shouri
Cool!
But in my opinion even better if the "cloud" in the background would have the shape of Japan itself!
My 2 cents!
GMV
Re: Shouri
Very impressive! My only critique is that I personally would love to see the red be a brighter shade like the Japanese flag.
Re: Shouri
WOW! I really hope this shirt wins. I love the rough style you used.
I like the flat color of the red sun you used too, it goes really well with the gray smoke in the background.
I'm in for one.
zebulon99x wrote:I love the styling that you used for this samurai. I'm curious, what does the kanji say?
I believe it's the title of the shirt- shouri (victory)...
Very nice. Actually isn't just a samurai, but one in a classic brush style. Very nice.
Being on white makes me conflicted about this one. I do like the artwork, however.
Re: Shouri
It appears an unsheathed katana is wielded in the right hand and a sheathed katana is in the left. Is that right? It confuses me.
Re: Shouri
Last week we had Ramby's dripping moon, Seki's dripping rose, and now a dripping sun...is this the new trend?
Re: Shouri
i like how the samurai looks,
placement is pretty good...
i think im okay with this fogging.

Re: Shouri
Great stuff for sure man. The style is uncanny, and the brush work top notch.
SkekTek wrote:I believe it's the title of the shirt- shouri (victory)...
Ah, I see. In that case, I like the kanji choice as well.
dankstick wrote:It appears an unsheathed katana is wielded in the right hand and a sheathed katana is in the left. Is that right? It confuses me.
Oh, is that what it is? I actually thought the left hand was just holding the sheath, but now I see what looks like the hilt of a sword too.
Re: Shouri
What on earth is with that huge grey splash?!?!
Jestik wrote:knew it was kdeuce the moment I saw it. It looks like a sequel to your samurai rage (but not in a bad way)
So did EVERYONE.
Yawn. As always.
I'm in love! Japan as a derby is just gonna rock!
kdubbs29 wrote:Very impressive! My only critique is that I personally would love to see the red be a brighter shade like the Japanese flag.
Agreed. Red would have been better.
Re: Shouri
I actually enjoy it more than the first samurai one, but I would like to have seen the red sun a little more worn or more painted like the kanji, it doesn't quite fit. Still gmv.
amidst the haze stood Tom Cruise, the last samurai... love the style man, very cool...
MERCY!!! Cried the Fish

Re: Shouri
I don't care if this is on white or not! The design is BA and I really wanna wear this one!!!
Muntoe wrote:I don't care if this is on white or not! The design is BA and I really wanna wear this one!!!
love it! great work!
sei wrote:amidst the haze stood Tom Cruise, the last samurai... love the style man, very cool...
Mmm. Looks too tall to be Tom Cruise.
"Last week we had Ramby's dripping moon, Seki's dripping rose, and now a dripping sun...is this the new trend?"--Paradox 55
I hope not. I really dislike drippy.
Re: Shouri
Love the design, but not the background color. I'm already pale, and white tees just do not help that. Biased opinion, but there you have it.
Best of luck to you, though!
Re: Shouri
I was looking at this picture for a bit, and I really enjoy looking at the brushing style used to depict the samurai. The slashed legs is nice, the red splotches are well done, the text is well written, and I decided in the end that I like the contrast of the flat red circle.
The one thing I really don't like is the background; the grey swirly stuff. It throws off the composition for me, being the largest shape, and my eyes unconsciously follow that off the drawing when I'd rather be looking at the other stuff in the picture, like the effects of the brush marks on the samurai.
My advice would be to perhaps try different shapes for the grey stuff. It feels like you're just trying to fill in the upper right space at the moment, but it's okay if there's nothing there; the lack of something there lends itself to create its own shape
Re: Shouri
This reminds me of something (that printed) from Derby 8 called Bushido.
I didn't like that one and I don't like this one.
Re: Shouri
I think the first kanji might be wrong. In the last part (lower-right corner), I think the final downward stroke is supposed to cross the horizontal stroke.
http://jisho.org/kanji/details/%E5%8B%9D
I love the shirt, though! I would totally buy it if the kanji were fixed.
Re: Shouri
For all the artists out there, when you use pre-made brushes like the big watercolor brush stroke in the background, do you have to re-do it with halftones or can you just leave it as it is? I ask because those kinds of brushes usually have varying shades of the same color and I'm not sure whether Woot can just print it as is with its varying shades (of the same color though) or whether you have to re-do it with halftones or whatever so its printable.

I have no idea if this is the answer you're looking for, but Woot generally won't print gradients, but they will print halftones. There's also a limit on how fine the halftones can be, but no one is really sure of what that might be.
My favorite shirt in the competition so far - I really do hope it wins. Insta-buy for me! Great work Kdeuce!
Re: Shouri
Sick design. Only slight niggle I have is why is their still a sword in the sheath when he is holding one in his other hand.

You're completely right. It's the radical for cut, which looks like 分 by itself. The two top strokes don't actually touch.
Awesome shirt. I hope this stays in the fog so I can buy it next week. My only complaint is the fact that it looks like another sword is in the sheath that he is holding in his left hand.
Re: Shouri
Good job with this. Has a great feeling and tone with it. Love it on white as well. I'll be in for one.
PSORngr wrote:Awesome shirt. I hope this stays in the fog so I can buy it next week. My only complaint is the fact that it looks like another sword is in the sheath that he is holding in his left hand.
It was common for Samurai to have two or more swords. http://life.halcode.com/wp-content/images/samurai.jpg
However, if you wanted to be picky, you could legitimately ask where the sheath for the second sword is.
Re: Shouri
I received "Roid Raging Wrath of the Samurizzle" a while back in a bag of randoms ... imho, it's very similar in style & execution to this one. This is an alright design, I suppose, and I mean no offense to the artist, but I'm a little disappointed to see this one in the fog, over some of the more unique and/or innovative entries.

The samurai's main sword was the Katana, but it was assisted by the Wakizashi which was a smaller blade that was more of an "honor" weapon. So yes, samurai had two blades. (actually three including a little dagger but thats not the point here)
I really really love the drawing of the samurai in this, but I really dislike the smoke behind him. Great job on the line-work either way!

You'll also note it is extremely similar to Bushido, but that has already been mentioned. Sadly, woot's original product link has dead pictures, so I can't link directly, but there it is.
not that this will get it rejected. Woot always seems to have room for blithering similarity to themselves. But it is to say that wooters always want what they already got. And the art-is-only-a-job corps here are always ready to give it to them.
bleeding nipple?
re: shouri
Armor tends to look similar but these are a bit close:
http://media.photobucket.com/image/drake%20in%20armor/Jumpingisuseless/drake2.jpg
Take a look, I could just be seeing things.
Honestly, this design feels too cobbled together for my taste. You have your samurai, your rising sun, your large text and some mist thrown in there in the background. It's all rather boring looking. "The Samurai and the Sea Dragon" has a much more vibrant look, I think. Even "Rising Sun Samurai" has more context and life to it.
Re: Shouri
I'm not sure if this looks "too" similar to "Bushido" or the "Roid Raging Wrath of the Samurizzle," but if there is another shirt out that that looks the same it would be nice to buy that one. . .
I was really looking forward to buying a white Woot shirt that I liked =/. . . as were a lot of people based on votes. . .
Re: Shouri
Figures the one shirt I've liked since I started watching shirt.woot would get rejected
Re: Shouri
Is there is a way to repeal a rejection or purchase a design directly from an artist, even if the cost is greater than normal, =)?
EtherealKing wrote:Is there is a way to repeal a rejection or purchase a design directly from an artist, even if the cost is greater than normal, =)?
Woot owns the rights to the design for a period of time, then the rights revert to the designer who can do what they want with it.
I'm actually kind of happy this one got rejected. No offense to the artist; I think the artwork is terrific, but the design itself is very generic. With a derby theme such as "Japan", I'd want something a little less cliche than a samurai, a red sun, and kanji.
Damn you Woot!
I really wanted this shirt T_T
This is the stinkiest business model ever.
"Lets allow the customer to decide the product. Then, after much support is given to a particular piece, let's totally not offer it because we're t-shirt snobs. Brilliant!"

That's really not how it works. At all.

Did you miss the part where it was almost exactly like another shirt?
Altheahelaine wrote:Did you miss the part where it was almost exactly like another shirt?
Only thing is, that other shirt isn't for sale, and this was. Ah well... no use crying over spilled milk, yes?
xharumoto wrote:Only thing is, that other shirt isn't for sale, and this was. Ah well... no use crying over spilled milk, yes?
Woot's policy doesn't factor whether the shirt is still for sale. Otherwise, designers could just carbon copy the hundreds of out of print shirts each and every derby.

I didn't like that one and I don't like this one.
I totally bought the first one and would have bought this one
This does NOT look like the shirt that has already been printed. It really is a shame this got rejected being that the similarities end at subject matter. I saw this the first night of the derby and wanted it then. I still want it now.
Altheahelaine wrote:Did you miss the part where it was almost exactly like another shirt?
That would be a relevant complaint if it were applied to all shirts fairly. I mean, seriously, how many cute bento box designs have you seen before? And there is always the famous (mis)quote that "Everything that can be invented has been". So short of blatant copying, it should be irrelevant how (dis)similar two designs are if the majority of people want to purchase one.
bonsaimo7 wrote:This does NOT look like the shirt that has already been printed. It really is a shame this got rejected being that the similarities end at subject matter. I saw this the first night of the derby and wanted it then. I still want it now.
Woot's definition of similar encompases several things. Sometimes they mean that there's one shirt that's very similar, and sometimes they mean that there are a lot of shirts with the same idea in multiple places.
Still my favorite of all the entries.
I don't understand why this was rejected.... This one didn't look anything like the other samurai shirt posted here. With that logic every single shirt in this derby that features a samurai or koi fish should be rejected. Probably anything with a ninja as well.
Re: Shouri
Frankly, I don't think that the shirt was similar enough to warrant rejection if you go by how woot usually operates, but at the same time I'm happy the rejection was made. I have no problem with woot getting stricter on the "similar shirts" rule, and I hope they continue to amp it up.
All that being said, while I wouldn't have bought this design (lack of funds coupled with too many shirts) I would've been more than happy to have ended up with in randoms. I just think that the diversity of prints is more important than having every single shirt be something I'd wear.
Good luck next round, kdeuce (incidentally, I have your other samurai shirt--really like the comic book feel of that one).

Agreed. I think it warranted rejection, personally, but I didn't expect it. If it's a sign that woot is getting more consistent and strict with their rejections, I'm all for it. Consistency is the big thing.
But yeah, I can see why it might be viewed as a stretch, but I'm surprised that anyone would outright say it has no similarity to the "Bushido" shirt. As I said before, they've made (rarely, but still) rejections on even bigger stretches.
reav wrote:I totally bought the first one and would have bought this one
I totally ordered a random shirt, got bushido, and gave it away without wearing it once. Didn't even make the kid buy it.
The only shirt I was interested in. Anyways I think you should go with the advice herm2606 suggested. Turn that gray stuff into the shape of Japan and print it elsewhere or something of the sort.
Re: Shouri
If this design is posted on another site, hope it's posted, so I can be sure to vote/purchase it.
i want this shirt
