Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
This is a team effort from Beefcoat and Sachmoe64. The Kanji is samurai (above) and fish (below). We hope that you enjoy it.

I can't lie. This is pretty sick. Not huge fan of the creme (I think it would pop more on navy or royal and make more sense) but still pretty awesome.
edit:
Looking at it again the shirt choice is probably because of color limitation?

Agreed - this is great. Love the drawing, the movement, the colors and the style!
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Awesomes! Liking the use of colour here, and I'm glad you put it on creme.
The fish's expression is a bonus.
Nice shirt guys - you got my vote
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
at the moment, I think this might be my favorite thing I've seen this week

Thanks everyone!!!

Beefmoe--hahahaha!!
Seriously, though, very nice. ![]()

Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Looks really cool. Great work you two.
I really like this one a lot. The style of the fish and it's expression are great. Awesome work! GMV.
What do the Japanese words mean?

He wrote up what the words mean on the post just under it.
Beefcoat and Sachmoe, I'm actually enjoying this. It's amusing, brings in the Japanese angle and your kanji doesn't look like a font and has been dulled/accented in a way to compliment the piece. Great job you two.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Not to pick nits, but aren't bettas from Thailand?
The artwork is great, though.
JadenKale wrote:He wrote up what the words mean on the post just under it.
Whoops. I must have skimmed it to quickly. Long day at work. thx
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
funny and well executed, nice combo
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Nicely done! I love the expressions on their faces.
However, being a betta enthusiast and long-time proud parent of such fish, they're Siamese, not Japanese. >.< Not that it makes your design any less fab.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
I don't love this shirt, but it is certainly my top choice in the derby. Nice work.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Wonderful! GMV
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
It's a very rare creme shirt that can tempt me into voting for it, but I love this one.
kadigan wrote:Not to pick nits, but aren't bettas from Thailand?

Agreed, I may not be able to overcome an oversight like this. I'm struggling because I own and love bettas, but they're definitely not Japanese fish.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
This is my favorite so far. And as for those nit picking about bettas being siamese, I don't see anybody claiming these fish are bettas...just that they are Japanese fighting fish. Use your imaginations, people!
albinoapple wrote:Agreed, I may not be able to overcome an oversight like this. I'm struggling because I own and love bettas, but they're definitely not Japanese fish.
Same here... I'm still on the fence. I own and breed Bettas so this is a hard one for me!
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Simply awesome. 100% going to buy if this one wins.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Kanji verfication: 侍魚
侍: samurai
魚: fish
侍魚: No meaning but a logical compound. Plausible.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
this is really, really good.
I'd buy this no question.
consider this.....A VOTE!
Wrong country for a start. The art isn't really doing it for me either. Never been a fan of anthropomorphism.
looks like ponyo :/

I like this one a lot. Cute, artistic, and funny among other great qualities this design has. Hope this one wins/gets top three(at least), gmv!
Deflit wrote:I WISH I could get a hold of that movie, heard it was pretty good.
I really wanna see that movie too!!! I love love love Miyazaki. Howl's Moving Castle is definitely my favoritest.
Also, is there such a thing as Japanese fighting fish? I've only heard of Betta(Siamese fighting fish). I dunno if that would make me like the shirt any less, but just wondering.

Thanks for all the great comments and critiques!
I personally always heard the name "Japanese fighting fish" Its our bad for not researching into it. however, on Wiki, it says alternate names with "Chinese/Japanese fighting fish" listed. No matter where they are originally from or how they got that name, that's the name I associate with them.
Give the genius Beefcoat some serious props he saved this design from the recycle bin!

Oh! I really love this!

If you like Miyazaki then you would probably like the 'Dirty' shirt with the soot gremlins. I just wish it had been done on a Totoro.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
I really like the style this shirt is done in. I agree with others that cream is a hard sell but this shirt does it nicely. I bet my daughter would love it.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
I really love the concept and artwork, but I have to agree that as a betta enthusiast I don't think it's fair to enter critters native to Thailand in a derby that is specifically themed "Japan".
I also don't like creme D: Any other shirt color and I'd have bought it, regardless of what the derby theme was.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
I love everything about this... I don't even know where to start...
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Very well done. Good concept for this one.

Looks like a house (above) and a cart (below). We do enjoy it.
Hope to be wearing this soon.

Would have been better had the Kanji been drawn properly.

Hah! I just saw that movie last night! And Spirited Away the night before! Plus I also bought that movie book for Spirited the day after with them sketches, movie stills, and script from the movie! And now I'm about to watch Kiki's Delivery Service! Hahaha...
sefjwm wrote:Would have been better had the Kanji been drawn properly.
Properly as in proper compound or properly as in stroke order? The compound...there isn't anything better. For the stroke order it could be better but it's readable and not much worse than Japanese people's handwriting I see every day.

I was just watching some of his older stuff recently (Nasaka of the Valley of the Wind and Castle in the Sky). Now with this Japanese theme, I'm all in the mood to go watch more. Miyazaki marathon party at my house! Everyone's invited! woohoo!!

My daughter loves all the movies she has seen that he made. We took her to the theaters to see Ponyo and she just blow away. She really enjoyed it. I might have to have a marathon as well with her this week since I have some time off.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Cool stuff. The colors and style work really well on cream.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Best shirt in teh Derby, only one I'd love to buy. My only complaint has already been voiced, but are any other colours possible?
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Well. I think it is sort of a cheap way to portray Japan by just placing a kanji. Also, samurai do not wear that armor. It is sad that most people don't do proper research.
smilebit wrote: Also, samurai do not wear that armor. It is sad that most people don't do proper research.
Really?

I'll never understand the caterwauling over shirt colors when they blend so nicely with the design, as in this case.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
i would love this if it weren't on the creme color, beautiful artwork though, and great idea =)
jmmbell1987 wrote:I'll never understand the caterwauling over shirt colors when they blend so nicely with the design, as in this case.
Some people don't like the way certain colors look on them. Or they have other issues with a particular color - too dark, too light, too see-through, already own too many of this color...
Usually it's not about the design, though.

I understand. It just seems to me that a lot of people have kneejerk reactions to certain colors (white, cream, and asphalt usually) no matter the design. Sometimes, the shirt color is perfect for the design. In this case, I think cream is perfect, allowing the design to let the shirt color become a sort of color base (the face/armor and tales of the fish are largely comprised of the creme), and allowing for more interesting colors.
Love the fish. Kanji on shirts always looks so tacky to me though. Arggghghhhhh....
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
I really like this design!
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
I completely love this one! awesome idea and illustration. I didn't realize it was a collab until I read your post just now, you guys worked very well together. Very well done! ![]()
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
I like how the fish are not showing any emotion. Just a blank stare.
Agh! If only I didn't have 4 creme shirts already :/
Still GMV though.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Would a betta born and raised in Japan not be a Japanese fish?
Out of the blue, I think it's rather annoying that people are just submitting anything "Asian" themed and calling it Japanese just because they stuck some Japanese text on it.
ladynightshade wrote:Out of the blue, I think it's rather annoying that people are just submitting anything "Asian" themed and calling it Japanese just because they stuck some Japanese text on it.
Yes. But I knew it would happen.

The artist made it clear that he thought the fish were called "Japanese Fighting Fish". It's a mistake, perhaps, but not the same as slapping the "Japan" tag on anything Asian.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Love, love, love it! And what an interesting choice for the shirt color - I wouldn't have predicted I'd like the design on creme, but I do. A lot!
GMV!
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
The more I look at this shirt, the more I like it. GMV.
love the blank fish stare, and their fins wrapped around their swords... nicely done!
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Simply no way for this to not get my vote. +1
I love how the fish armors contrast and the look on their faces... hehe.
Good one, I envy you ![]()
woohooo! rock that fog sachmoe! haha! awesome design dude, best of luck!

While I agree with you, people are not just here to buy a deign, they are here to buy a t-shirt with a design on it. If a person does not like a color, it won't matter how good the design is, the shirt color is important to them. They are not going to buy it to frame it, they want to wear it. It's understandable why people have knee-jerk reactions to certain colors. That's part of the design process.
If you can succeed at getting a non-popular shirt color to print and sell then the designer did their job, not just good, but very good and more power to them.

I was focusing on this case in particular. In this design, the shirt color is very much part of the design, and another shirt color would screw up the whole design. In other words, it's hard to question the shirt color of choice, even if one particularly dislikes cream.

Gotcha. I don't really care for cream myself, but I might actually get this shirt because of the design and I agree, the shirt color for this design is a good fit.
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Fabulous design. I've always heard them called Japanese Fighting Fish myself...
Re: Japanese Fighting Fish
Oops,, Newbie alert...
It would seem that the whole concept of WOOT is to promote ART.
It would also seem that most ART is fantasy of one kind or another.
It would also seem that Photo-realism is not the venue here.
IMHO it would also be very hard to stay away from anthropomorphism in a fantasy/ Art venue.
So,,, A Betta fish , no matter where they are from, does not fight with a sword.
Nor do they were armor .
But in the world of ART, A Japanese Fighting Fish can easily do both.
I'd want one... tanx

I would definitely buy this shirt but in a different darker color.
