Re: Giant Sequoia

Giant Sequoia

Found at Sequoia National Park, these are some of the largest and oldest trees in the world. The main tree is "The President", also in the background you can see a tunnel cut into another that is big enough to walk through.

I don't know... this from the guy who didn't want to see generic forest/deer designs...

Just kidding, I've always loved the sequoia and still need to get out to California to see them

The coloring style is great and I really like the beams of light cutting through. I don't think I'd wear this particular shirt, but I love the illustration.

The irony isn't lost on me (in fact it's the reason I added the deer to begin with) however this one isn't generic, it's very specific. I got the notion to do it after talking about how I expected to see shirts that just had generic trees or mountains or animals with no actual ties to National Parks. After making that remark I thought about how someone could feasibly do such a shirt if one of the above things was very specific to that park, which made me immediately think of Sequoia trees. Once I got the image in my head of the red bark against the green leaves and background, I pretty much had to do it. But I did go out of my way to make sure it tied to the park and was National Park specific, not generic, which was my original gripe/concern.

Re: Giant Sequoia

Generic trees/deer aside you really did a great job of capturing the coloring on the trees and the lighting is phenomenal as well as the depth. I've not been to Sequoia national park but I have been to several redwood forests and this is spot on.

I normally like your artwork, but not this time. I don't really like the whole derby theme this week; there are too many tree shirts as it is. This shirt reminds me of those cheesy paintings you see hanging in a grandma's home or a nursing home. It does look good but I wouldn't want to wear it.

I love trees! On vacation, I take pictures of trees all the time. This shirt is fantastic! I'd buy it and wear it without hesitation. What's really cool, besides the colors of the trees, lighting and the shirt is the awesome positioning of the tree. I don't think I own any shirt's that have that illustration positioned on one side. This shirt would not have been the same without the positioning.

Great job! I love it.

I usually love your work, tgentry, but I'm not really seeing the theme with this one. I'm hoping woot expected more from this theme than simply more tree shirts to add to the countless others out there. And while it's certainly a better illustration than most tree shirts (and a change from the usual round, deciduous tree designs) but I don't think I'd wear it.

It's very specific to the theme. Giant Sequoia's appear naturally in one area in the world, and the Sequoia's in this image are based on specific trees in Sequoia National Park. I even added details to make it even more park specific. For instance there's a small sign in front of the main one (known as The President), a giant tunnel bored through one just like at the park, I even put in some lines to suggest fencing of some sort. How much more on-topic could it be?

I apologize for my ignorance. Adding to my shame is that I grew up in California, and I probably should've known all this. I never realized that sequoias only grew in that one park.

I disagree with that. It is surely on theme, although so are many many other shirts this week. TGentry took the second part of the derby prompt and not the first. Great skills. I hate this derby though -- much like I've hated the derbies lately -- so no buy/vote.

Looks like it's olive green to me. Same color as Scareperson that printed last derby.

Or at least that's what it looks like to me. I don't think Woot has a forest green.

Edit: I stand corrected. It's brown. Nice. I like brown...

It is brown. Those colors on the design have an uncanny ability to make the shirt color seem green as well. I noticed it as soon as start dropping them in.

If you've got the time could you post a larger image on the brown template? I think it might help show the brown better and I for one would like a better idea of how that would look.

As far as I can tell it's a tight battle between 3rd, 4th, and 5th. I just got to work, although my mom, who has been watching the tallies at her office, said my entry just skyrocketed in the hotness. Something similar happened last week as well. To make it clear, I have nothing to do with it.

This has been happening since I can remember when the fog is hotly contested. When there are very clear winners no one bothers but when it's close there are plenty of people who hadn't voted on the fog voting for whatever fog configuration or individual designs they want to win spiking things in the hotness.

I've never seen any benefit to any particular artist that would make me think it was nonrandom (though I have seen a definite bias against shall we say lower quality artists) and it generally follows what I feel to be quality designs that deserve to print.

Generally, when I notice that happening and I have votes in the fog, I carefully decide which one I want the most and remove my other votes, giving the one I actually want to buy a (slightly) greater chance of winning. If everyone did this, it would thin out the "ha ha, gmv" votes, the "aww cute, gmv" votes, and the "good unwearable art, gmv" votes, and people would have shirts that they actually wanted print more often. Maybe. But that won't happen, so the point is moot :D

Anyway, here's hoping you win third (or second!), TGentry I just realized I don't have one of your shirts yet, and that needs to be fixed :D
