I am sorry that no one seems to get my humor. Probably because English is not my native tongue and my level of American culture is still not good enough.

Let me break it down and see if it makes any sense to you.

1. Q = cute. Q tee = cutie.

2. As cute as a button.

3. Draw a button to the shape of a Q.

4. and place that button to the physical position of your bellybutton on the shirt.

5. The button and the threads (thus the Q) also resembles a cute snail. And the seam in the middle of the chest can also be seen as the snail trail.

That is all I got for you guys. Let me know if you think it is still not funny.

Re: Q tee, as Q as a bellybutton

I am astonished no one likes this one. I know my design wasn't particularly popular in the previous derbies but only 3 votes (and that includes my own) so far is kinda unbelievable. My fragile self-confidence as an artist is vanishing. Anyone cares to explain a little bit as what went wrong? I thought it was clever, and well executed.

I'll try to help...

It's well executed (the button looks great) and the entire design takes up a really interesting space on the shirt, I like it. One problem could be that people don't really want to draw attention to their belly button. And I also don't understand the title, that could be a problem. Sometimes you just get unlucky and your design gets lost in the shuffle.

Hope that was (somewhat?) helpful. I really don't know what will catch on with people either.

I did not realize the bellybutton would be an issue? The original idea is to have a Q (aka cute, also in the phrase Q tee = cutie), and put the phrase "cute as a button" to the actual position of bellybutton. What you said may make sense, as I am still learning the American culture (I am a foreign student).

Thanks for the kind words though, bootsboots. I love your work as always.

Maybe TOO clever? Cause I don't understand it. It is visually appealing, though!

Even after reading my explanation??

Then I need to reflect on my English skill...

I do like this design, it is quite pretty.

I think perhaps it would have been easier for people to understand the shirt if you had just named it "Cute as a Bellybutton".
It is not so much that your English skills are lacking, as it is the average person will just not take the time to decipher a title.
If it is not instantly apparent, it will unfortunately get looked over- much the same as when a thumbnail for shirt is not instantly attractive, many people will not look at the shirt comp itself.

I hope that helps a little.

I agree. A more obvious title would have helped. "Cute as a Button" is good.

And I've heard the complaint before that some people don't like to put focus on the belly area. Just passing it along, as a possible reason. Your english is excellent.

Just too much to explain for the wearer. Noone really gets that it's cute as a button if you didn't know about the derby. Personally, i wouldn't wear a shirt with a blue cloud on it with a button on a thread.

Maybe a shirt with just a button on it, made to look cute?

I think you're overthinking it. If you want to sell you're going to need to think more commercially - think of simpler designs.

Unfortunately that will only place you near the top, the best designs never win. To win you have to be corny, kawaii, or both.

I think part of the problem is that while "Q tee" does indeed sound like "cutie," just "Q" on its own only sounds like "cue," not "cute," breaking down the word play significantly.
