yeah, gorillaz was the first thing i thought of, too, which is why i REALLY like this one! (the high level of detail and nice use of halftones is also excellent!)
Re: Sky Fishing
This is beautiful. I love love love the colors.
Re: Sky Fishing
Fly fishing! What kind of fly does one tie for bait in this situation? (Alas, can't make it out in the illustration.)

Same here... such a dreamy feel.
Re: Sky Fishing
Add one for thinking of Gorillaz, but I love this shirt regardless lol
Re: Sky Fishing
But what's he gonna do once he catches it?
Re: Sky Fishing
Is that a cat behind him? Aren't those fish a little out of its league?
Re: Sky Fishing
Beautiful work, as always! I love the color scheme, all my favorite hues in one. Wonderful job here
.
Re: Sky Fishing
This is great. I love the atmospheric coloring. This is 100% quality.
Re: Sky Fishing
I like it, but I don't like the placement... I think the island would get lost under my boobs. It should be higher up.

I have found my new favorite shirt.woot artist.

Yes, that is a cat behind him. i should have put a little close up. glad you noticed it though!

I love this shirt very much, I will buy two of these, you can still link close ups in this thread to persuade people!
Re: Sky Fishing
Wonderfully whimsical. I love the subdued colors. It's a very soothing and creative design.
Re: Sky Fishing
Oh please please please let this win, I absolutely love this shirt.
Good luck reaching the fog, man. This shirt is really great and original.
Re: Sky Fishing
This shirt is absolutely beautiful--I would definitely buy it! The color scheme is very dreamy and calming to me.
Just one question--how do you effectively use halftones? Newbie here.
This was the shirt that made me take the time to log in and vote for. I absolutely LOVE it, and I will definitely be in for one if it sells. I will be quite disappointed if it doesn't.
Re: Sky Fishing
The more I look at it, the more I love it.

I love this shirt soooo much.
BUT
This shirt, or a very similar one, have been sold on threadless. It was in different colora though.
EclecticMuse wrote:

Print them on a blank page, wad it up, pile your tinder all around, with larger sticks ready to add later, then strike a match and apply to the center of the halftone! As it begins to light the tinder around it, start gradually adding larger pieces until you have a conflagration!
Re: Sky Fishing
Don't listen to lwoodnj. Myself and plenty of others like, and have voted for, your art work. Nice job, even if you did start with another concept (gorillaz windmill) you took it in a different direction, and executed it quite well I might add. GMV
Re: Sky Fishing
Beautiful! I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Re: Sky Fishing
I love this shirt, let's fog it up!
Re: Sky Fishing
This would look spectacular on white. Not feeling the cream at all. Doesn't really make any sense for "sky."
mrwednesday wrote:This would look spectacular on white. Not feeling the cream at all. Doesn't really make any sense for "sky."
I do wish this was on white as well... it also fits, as clouds/sky are more of a white color than cream. I'm guessing patrickpens considered both, so maybe the overall look was just dreamier with cream.
Re: Sky Fishing
Beautiful! GMV
This needs to get back in the fog, asap.
Re: Sky Fishing
What kind of bait do you use when sky fishing? Bats (aka nightflyers as opposed to nightcrawlers)?
Still frickin sweet and dreamy, still gmv.
Re: Sky Fishing
this is a cool looking shirt, i just don't understand what it has to do with flight. i mean it has fishing, which is great. and a floating (magic?) island farm scene. but i am just not making the connection. not that it's required either, because plenty of shirts have printed and been so far off theme its ridiculous. i am just surprised there hasn't been a discussion on this one.

The land is floating through the air and the whale/fish are flying nearby. Flight has been illustrated. There's really no argument to be made.
mjl9320 wrote:The land is floating through the air and the whale/fish are flying nearby. Flight has been illustrated. There's really no argument to be made.
i am not trying to argue, so don't be a jag. i am simply stating there was no flight to me.
if someone drew a cat with clouds around it would that be flight?
if david blaine was levitating would that be flight? he is perceived to be floating, so by your statement it would count as flight.
regardless, i said i like the design, i am just stating it is weird the usual haters aren't creating a storm, but then again its not ramy or seki so they aren't fueled with as much hatred.
anyway, congrats on the design, i still like it.
Re: Sky Fishing
Oh wow, so glad this is in the fog now. I actually kinda want to buy this!

I have no interest in arguing either, but I wanted to jump in and make a point that I've made many times in the past in my own defense, and which a lot of people seem to ignore (whether selectively or altogether)- Woot has a write-up for a reason. They give the themes names so that there is a general blanket under which designs should potentially fall, but then there is a much longer description to explain what they are looking to see with a theme. Sometimes it's extremely specific, and they mention things that will not be allowed. Other times, they make it very clear that they will allow any interpretation of the theme (ex. harvest)- and anything encompassed by the writeup is fair game, and always has been. In all my time on woot, I can't remember any rejections for being off topic on anything that fell under the description, even if the connection to the name of the theme wasn't obvious. It is usually very easy to look at the description and figure out what they are looking to allow. This week, they stated:
"If it moves through the air, or at least wants to move through the air, it's fair game for this week's Derby"
The fish look like they are moving through the air to me. They don't have to be flying. In fact, if it was a fish looking at the air, it would be on theme. There's no reason for anyone to get on patrickspens's case for this entry, because I believe that it is exactly what woot described in the writeup. People will always get on my case and I know that, but in this case there is no reason for anyone to question this entry at all. Just because people might have made a fuss if I had posted it, doesn't mean they should make a fuss if anyone else does. It's just irrelevant.
Anyway, great design and congrats on fogging. I hope it prints ![]()
jabberjaws13 wrote:i am not trying to argue, so don't be a jag. i am simply stating there was no flight to me.
Just because you perceive flight as no less than an airplane with squiggly lines behind it doesn't mean there's not a broader concept to flight.

Quoted for truth.
mjl9320 wrote:if the cat was in a superman pose, then yes.
so by that logic this isn't on theme because the fish aren't in a superman pose, nor is the fisherman, nor is the floating island.
as ramy stated it is on theme because of the vague rules of this particular derby. regardless, i still like the design, but you are still an id10t.
ramyb wrote:snip
This design is also about 100x more on topic as most of what you submit which is why you get flak and others don't.
That said, I can potentially see where someone would be coming from saying this is off topic but there's only really one argument and no one has made it. That argument would be that the writeup is prompting for things which are inherently grounded unless they are flying. Plane has to take off, bird has to flap its wings, etc. Everything that is "flying" in this design seems pretty permanently in the air. However, it takes an incredibly about of creative interpretation to get that kind of specificity out of what woot wrote and that position is just wrong anyway.
The fish move through the air. Arguably the island moves through the air (the chimney indicates it does, the fishing line indicates it doesn't). There's plenty of flight here. Saying this isn't flight because the island is floating is akin to arguing that any design that shows the ground isn't about flight either. There is no controversy which is why you aren't seeing any, jabberjaws.
Re: Sky Fishing
wow, im glad this made it into the fog.
lets see if it stays...
mrwednesday wrote:This design is also about 100x more on topic as most of what you submit which is why you get flak and others don't.
Generally the stated problem with a Ramy design is that it's not on topic at all, 0%. So if this is 100 times more on topic it's still 0% on topic...
I'm just joking here, btw.
jabberjaws13 wrote:so by that logic this isn't on theme because the fish aren't in a superman pose, nor is the fisherman, nor is the floating island.
In an abstract sense, floating is a subclass of flying (one could say that a hot air balloon is flying). Therefore you could call this a flying island. The fish are clearly flying through the air, just as you might say a superhero flies through the air. The concept of flight is not limited to a bird flapping its wings or an airplane mid-flight unless you are a toddler who hasn't yet made this mental connection.

Your sig is an image link to a shirt of a bird flapping its wings, your username is jabberjaws13, and you're trolling various forums in a feeble attempt to gain votes for an unpopular design.

Just came back to look at this. I hadn't even noticed the wavy markings on the fish or the smoke coming from the chimney. You're brilliant, spens.

i was merely stating a point that a floating islnd has no more to do with flight than a cat hanging out in clouds. YOU are the id10t that said it would only be on theme if it was in a superman pose. none of the elements on this shirt are in a superman pose.
i already said i liked the shirt, you are the pea brain that spun everything. and watching the films does my user name have to do with anything? i have purchased three times as many tees as you at least in waaaaaay less time than you. so don't even try saying my account is to garner votes.

Heh. Obviously JJ was born in 1913 and is 96 years old. Or created the username when he/she was 13 years old. Ten years ago. Or it's his/her lucky number.
Honestly, I just think it's funny when people jump to conclusions about people based on user names. I've had all sorts of assumptions about HalfWheat.

Not to say that people's assumptions are always correct but what you choose for your username says a lot about you if you think about it. For better or worse, it is a name that you are choosing to represent yourself to whatever anonymous community you happen to be joining. Picking a random user name with a bunch of letters and numbers is just as telling as something with underlying meaning.

Oh sure, it means something, but as you said the assumptions can be way off base. Which is fine, too, when someone knows that their assumptions could be wrong. The funny part about it is when someone gets all huffy and makes comments along the line of "Well, it's obvious from your username..."
Maybe some day I'll grow up and be WholeWheat.
