Re: The Bird's Eye View
great perspective illustration!
Re: The Bird's Eye View
So true! I especially like the target on the guy.
Re: The Bird's Eye View
Great job, I was thinking of doing something very similar, this turned out great
Everytime he tried... Everytime he tried...
The way you have it i wish they were like targets as in sights on a gun or whatever instead of bullseyes, buttt its stilll hilarious and awesome.

How did you get a picture of my car... GMV

Totally agree with the above statement.
Re: The Bird's Eye View
hilarious.. love the concept, the colors, and target.

Re: The Bird's Eye View
Ha! Very funny and great perspective.
Re: The Bird's Eye View
This is a great idea and drawing. The perspective really pushes this one to a whole new level.

Hahaha so true! XD

Re: The Bird's Eye View
Great illustration, I think i'd rather have it on a poster than a shirt but gmv.

Re: The Bird's Eye View
you've been busy this derby! This one is definitely my favorite from you out of this week's offerings.
EmoryCash wrote:gary larson may call you.
That was my first thought too. Same gag but that was people's heads. Probably different enough I'd think, though I've seen folks squawk about much less from an originality standpoint. Then again this isn't one of The Artists That Shall Not Be Named so we may not hear anything from those guys at all.
This was the best image of it I could find. The Far Side's lawyers have apparently done an excellent cleaning job.
Re: The Bird's Eye View
Gary Larson would be PISSED. OR possibly flattered, actually.

Re: The Bird's Eye View
I remember seeing a kid in grade school wearing the Gary Larson version of this on a tee shirt. I only remember because I was very much into the Far Side at the time, and remember wanting the shirt.

I used to own the shirt you are talking about.
Re: The Bird's Eye View
What I like best about this idea is the framing of the design. Very nice, and not at all blocky.
EmoryCash wrote:gary larson may call you.
I have to agree. Given Sokowa's rejection for the fish playing baseball in the fishbowl many many derbies back, I'm not sure woot will let this pass. Though they might, they don't really reject anything anymore.
Simple idea but so well executed. I love it :3
I'll have to admit, I laughed when I saw the target on the guy :P Great job :D
Re: The Bird's Eye View
As much as I love the execution, my first thought, as well, was of The Far Side.
EmoryCash wrote:gary larson may call you.
Amen. I wondered if anyone would call foul on this.

"Great idea?" Yeah, but for someone else. This isn't the first rip-off to come through this site.
"Whole new level?" You people wouldn't know originality if it was crapping on the hood of your hybrid.
Get out of the house once in awhile, and pick up a book--something BESIDES manga. Something that actually has merit.
Bird on left has such an evil grin going on.
Re: The Bird's Eye View
Far Side! Thanks to the other wooters for mentioning it. The concept is funny, yet as soon as I saw the shirt I was surprised that it was in the fog and not rejected because I swear I had seen it before...

I'm sorry to say the great Mr. Larson was not the first to think of the whole bullseye on people for birds thing. Nor do I think Patrick is one for ripping off others or reading manga all day. This is a great piece, and while Far Side is one of my favorite comic series of all time, this is by far a much better executed piece of art. Again good job Patrick.
PS I'm trying to catch up with you on subs this week but your killing me on votes

hahaha! you always make me smile! great work mate!
Re: The Bird's Eye View
Nice drawing, but I am curious to see what stance Woot takes on this one.
Re: The Bird's Eye View
I saw this in a Far Side comic once:

Re: The Bird's Eye View
Ok, so these are hard ones. I'm not going to claim to not see the common punchline here, but I agree the execution is considerably different. I think of it like two comedians vamping on the same theme, but both put their own spin on it. Of course we'll never know if Patrick sat down expressly to re imagine GL's work (I sorta doubt it. It's not like this idea can't be arrived at by someone with a sense of humor), but I can be relatively sure this isn't infringing on GL's art. As we've said before ideas are not easily copyrightable, the execution is.
All that said, I could see people not voting because they feel like it's been regurgitated. That's not different than someone choosing at a joke they've heard a thousand times.

Woot hates Sokowa confirmed! Good to see that consistency still isn't important at woot. I'd wager that this non-rejection is more a function of shirt sites not getting sued than anything. It seems like they were hesitant to test the waters of IP but now that its been done, they are pretty confident they don't have to worry about it.

So sokowa can resub the fishbowl and it won't get rejected?

Thanks for being consistent!
Re: The Bird's Eye View
I wouldn't want to be that guy
Sweet design

haha...true dat! great shirt, though. gmv.
Re: The Bird's Eye View
I love the shirt, however i feel that it may be too close to to Far Side comic, which is what i immediately thought of. I'd still buy one though

Go look in a mirror and slowly breathe. Keep breathing in and out, in and out, until the veins popping out of your neck go back down and your face isn't purple anymore.

hehehe, i see what u did there...
ur implying hes angry...
hehehe....
Re: The Bird's Eye View
yknow, if this continues to stay unrejected despite being too similar to a far side cartoon, I certainly hope woot is planning to send Sokowa a $1000 check to apologize for rejecting her likely derby winner which was axed for allegedly being too similar to a far side cartoon way back last summer.

the fact that you don't know the difference between concept and execution is embarrassing.
