I think you did an interesting take on a rather hackneyed topic. Not in for one because me no likey video games, but damn fine job nevertheless.

Re: The Sleep of Reason Produces Flying Turtles

Ever since I was driving through Alabama and saw the Mobile Museum of Art's Goya exhibition last year, I've been wanting to do a shirt based on the composition and imagery of the famous "The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters" print. So here it is.

I know video game references are contentious, but I'm very proud of this design and I hope you like it, too.

edit: Here's what the Goya print looks like for those who don't like clicking links.

If only all video game parody designs were like this one, I'd never have a problem with them. Wonderfully drawn, much more than simple reference, and all around a very clever parody.

I've been checking the derby every few hours to see when this would get posted. This is simply amazing. I love it. Sure, it's a video game reference...but that's not what I love about it. You are a very talented artist and it certainly shows here. Well done. I'd be in for one (hopefully Friday night)!

One thing I'll say about this is that I didn't get that it was a video game reference until someone pointed it out (via comment) and I took a second look. That's how non-blatant it is! In that the artwork is superb and the reference sublime. GMV

This looks bastardly awesome! I really like the Goya inspiration for I enjoyed looking at his art work when I was in Madrid. I'd surely get one if it wins. Good luck!

My first thought wasn't Mario but de Goya, I had to take a closer look. Although it's a video game reference it's a classy one rather than a dorky one. Excellent all around. I hope it prints.

Only thing i really dont like is the chair, it seems off, compared to how he is sitting to the dest he looks, ackward, if that was fixed I think it would be a terrific shirt.

The video game fact didn't even bothered me on this.
It is a very good and young interpretation of Goyas work.
It is a young and actual work. A quality one.

Your artwork is really incredible-- but I'm sick to death of Mario themed designs, and I'm kind of appalled by how many there are in this week's derby. I really wish you'd used your talent for something else.

I don't think the plumber is sitting at all. I think his upper body is lying on the desk.

This shirt is beautiful and if it wins, I may have to cram a crowbar into my wallet.

I initially thought the colors would be all the more striking, since mario has the blue and red thing going on. However, everything seemed subdued in this design... I didn't like it at first, but it kinda grew on me. It's nice to see a Mario shirt that doesn't yell "MARIO SHIRT!" This design makes anyone interested in it really look at it to get the meaning. And with all the subtleties in the design, it deserves to get detailed attention. Then again, no bypasser will really get to notice all of it, but at least the wearer (if it prints, me) will have a really nicely made shirt. Congrats, I may have my first video game shirt with this derby. GMV. Kudos for the dual reference (Mario and Sleep of reason....)

This is really fantastic. Mostly because I immediately knew the two references right off the bat with the thumbnail. Good use of borrowing preexisting ideas to make it new. I like the warp of design to make it easier to stomach for a video game reference. And it's great to know people are still hip with learning about our past successors of art.

Good shape to the design. Great use of the piranha plant curling out and containing the imagery. The only way I could see this becoming solid is fixing the perspective of the chair and the tangent from Donkey Kong's fist and the flying turtle (which admittedly looks a little funny to me for some reason). With the original Goya, there is a resolve to the swirl of nightmarish imagery to the right of the woman's feet (the cat creature). I wonder if you could figure out a way to remedy that? A question mark block? A broken Yoshi egg? Or perhaps they were all spawning from a pipe?

These don't necessarily prevent the design from being successful so much as justify my personal beliefs as to what I want to invest money in.

Great job, good work. Hope you don't take my words to be critical so much as useful.

Whoa- Great critique! I've been trying to pay more attention to the gestalt lately and give the overall design a shape. I think if this shirt design more closely replicated the layout in Goya's print, though, it would become more of a bottom heavy print (my design last week was guilty of that) than an all-over print. Also, I hear what you (and HujoeBigs earlier) are saying about the stool. The slightest vertical compression in the print-ready is enough to fix that. But that's what you get in design contests that more or less require a 24-48 hour turnaround time to have a viable chance to compete.

PS I'm triple-checking the print-ready now and will post a life-size chunk of it when I'm done.

I know everyone has given this praise, but it's important to show love when it's due. This is really unique looking and raises the bar on video game reference shirts. I love the video game genre but have been offput by many recent entries, but this I'd wear and buy as gifts! congrats and good luck.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Great stuff!

edit: I had a close-up of the desk at actual size here, but just realized I did the sizing wrong, so hold on a bit and I'll fix that...

edit: thanks for the patience... here's achunk enlarged for detail at about the size it would print on the larger shirts. The shading on the characters is the shirt color showing through the white (actually warm gray #1) and then there's messy black ink stuff and lines strewn about. The human is softened with the slightly darker gray dots.

Even though it's the second derby in the row to have a Mario shirt in the FOG, I at least like the creativity in this one. You can't tell right away that it's a reference to our favorite plumber.

Great work! I really like this shirt and hope it wins. You deserve it after the obvious effort you put into it

Re: The Sleep of Reason Produces Flying Turtles

i would have liked this better without the big colored mario in front. i dont think hes necessary, and makes it too obvious for me to want to wear. maybe just the wrench, or his hat, lying there would have been fine, if something of him had to be in the picture. the nightmare part of this is what makes it cool, and is neatly drawn. i still think it would be on theme as it depicts his nightmare, even though you dont actually see him dreaming. could have put a few other nicely sketched bad guys in there instead and had them surround the hat even more. i dont know, the obvious mario just ruined this for me, even though everything is fantastically drawn

Re: The Sleep of Reason Produces Flying Turtles

The fact that this is a famous painting, and easily recognizable to it, lessens my rage on reference shirts, heh. The parody is clear, the art is nice, and the shirt makes sense both in and out of Woot.
I'd vote, but I probably wouldn't buy it. Not into Mario.

I do love the design and parody, though. Maybe if it were a Guild Wars Monk being plagued by Minotaurs and Cave Trolls, we'd be in business. But that'd be WAY to obscure to get fogged, hah. Good luck.

We love Mario in this house. He's one of our FAVORITE characters. I think the artwork is great on this one, and when I first pulled it up larger I didn't even get that it was mario. If noone had pointed that out to me, I would have bought it. And even though they have I will STILL buy it! (Should it win)

Actually, I believe that is just a mushroom. Probably a purple poison death shroom if I had to guess (not in the original SMB, but whatever. If you look closer you can see the Goomba very clearly to the right of the shroom.

I'm confused- I just checked wikipedia, and it says Goombas are based on mushrooms. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goomba

"Goombas, known in Japan as Kuribō (クリボー, lit. Chestnut Kid?), are a fictional species from Nintendo's series of Mario video games. They first appeared in the NES video game Super Mario Bros. They have appeared outside of video games, including in film, television, and other media. They are brown and are most commonly seen walking around aimlessly in video games. They are based on shiitake mushrooms, and were included at the last minute in Super Mario Bros. in order to create a simple, easy-to-defeat enemy."

I didn't even realize this until now, but the Hungarian word for mushroom is gombák. Pronounced more like goum-ba. Close to Goomba. Just an interesting (to me at least) similarity.
