This design was a team effort from Crescent Debris and myself. We had an awesome time bouncing this one back and forth until completion. Thanks again man for incredible talent and dedication.

This design is based on the 5 Chinese Elemental Movements know as "Wu Xing". Our design here depicts dragons representing each of the 5 movements fighting for total elemental supremacy!

Here is a link to a large composition:

You two compliment each other well. Crescent Debris- always a fan of your work. You can flesh out characters like no other. Drakxxx- your illustrations are always top notch.

I like how you incorporated the elements into the dragons rather than it just being "another dragon shirt". Very creative and well done. Voted.

Re: Wu Xing

I'm exhausted!! Haha. This was a lot of work but fun. Drakxxx and I bounced this thing back and forth A LOT.

He said "dragon" but MORE epic than just "a dragon"

I said "Yeah dragons are awesome... but it does indeed need to be something that related to the Zodiac more... and not just "a dragon"

He said what about all 12 animals in a kick ass battle.

I said what about the 5 elements.

He made a rough sketch of the 5 element dragons in a kick ass battle.

I took the basic idea and layout and made a version that put the elements in order (They cycle like Rock, Paper, Scissor so you can see that water and fire are making contact on the right side)

He then redrew that layout and GREATLY improved on Wood and Metal. And made the others quite a bit cooler but in the same pose and location.

I then went ahead and made the final art making only minimal changes.

He then blocked out the colors.

Then I volunteered for all the coloring detail. I knew it was going to be pain with only 6 colors (1 being black) That left me with 1 color per dragon. LAMEandFLAT is what that means. But, somehow I managed to make it work.

Quite a bit of work but we're both pleased with the results. Drakxxx is super cool to work with. Great work man! Oh yeah, GMV =P

Best dragon shirt I've seen in a long time. I love how, in addition to showing the Wu Xing destruction cycle (any cycle of five is a cycle in Wu Xing, though there are four(?) different ones. This one is destruction), you put fire (strong Yang energy) on the top and water (strong Yin energy) on the bottom. I hope that was intentional :D

This shirt would have been great if you could have used more colors, but it was still pulled off very well. I don't really like how the design forms a kind of rectangular shape, though. If you know what I mean. =\

I just wanted to thank everyone for the support and kind words. Even some of the Woot Elites are stopping by to give praise, and I thank you greatly! I mean that in all seriousness. It is greatly appreciated.

Now, on a less serious note, I would also like the address the few concerns so far. And keep in mind, it's all in fun.

So, there is concern that the design

"forms a kind of rectangular shape"
I see what you're getting at, but we like to call it "fills up the whole shirt"

There is further concern that the design
is still a dragon shirt.
Actually a shirt with 5 dragons on it is a "dragons" shirt but we'll let that one slide. I mean, there are 12 creatures to choose from this week. We wanted to try for something epic. 5 fighting pigs doesn't seem too awesome to me personally. Dragons are the coolest. Maybe Snakes or Dogs could work, but these dragons are basically snake wolves anyway right? The other choices just don't stack up. We didn't want wooters to feel uncomfortable about clicking the "I'd Want One" button on a shirt called "The 5 Elements of C0ck"

How did you pull this off with 6 colours?!
By using the shirt color for Metal and shading for wood.

I'm not a fan of the shirt colour though
Uuuhhhh ooohhhh!

I'd think tigers could have worked well too, or monkeys. (Who *wouldn't* want a shirt with a metallic fighting monkey on it?) These dragons aren't obviously oriental at first glance, since the focus is entirely on the heads, so I'd think another animal like a money or tiger would lead people to realize that this is supposed to be a representation of Wu Xing. ... at least, the people who know what the heck Wu Xing is.

This is a nice shirt, but I do agree with the stigma against "yet another dragon shirt," even if I think the comp is amazingly well done.

I get what you're saying and I understand the frustration when the theme is something like "Office Workers" and someone makes a dragon in a tie holding a coffee cup. I get that. But this is specifically about the creatures in the Chinese zodiac.

So why the dragon? Why not the monkey or tiger or Pig? Well, the way I see it, if you've got 12 choices, you don't just pick The Shopping Cart just because EVERYBODY picks The Limo. I think dragons are the coolest of the bunch. And when working on derby entries I don't make things with the goal in mind to "make something popular". I make things that I like. And I won't speak for Drakxxx but from what I see, he puts in a ton of effort on designs that I never see as a cash-in. They all seem like things he genuinely likes. And that's why I enjoy working with him.

There may not be a huge selection of Monkey shirts but there are plenty of tiger shirts in this derby and in the past. There's even one in my sig.

I judge each design individually. For example, I don't think TGentry's "The Ancient Chinese Raggon" is another bunny shirt. Maybe our design isn't as unique as that but you get the idea. I don't see why we should make a Monkey shirt just for the sake of avoiding dragons. You have to make what you like.

Thanks for the comment. I don't mean it to sound bitter because its not, I'm simply explaining WHY its another dragon shirt. And hopefully you can see it for whats unique in it, and not whats the same. Thanks.

Wow guys, this looks amazing. It's easy to see the hard work you put into it. I have no complaints about the shirt color, because I know how hard color choices can be with only 6 colors - and when the shirt color can help, you've just gotta take it. Especially with so much going on.

Good luck you two!

I'd gripe about dragon shirts if there were peculiar dragon shirts in every derby. Have we ever gone through a derby without a any of the fuzzy usual suspects like bunnies, kitties, etc? In multiple entries? Once in a while, a dragon will appear, and usually it's in a design where it makes sense. We're not seeing dragons dressed like turtles or dragons playing poker in every derby.

When there are three or four dragon designs in every unrelated derby, I'll say the designers are making too many of them. But in this derby, it makes sense that there are a lot of them. Just like there are a lot of tiger shirts.

As far as this specific shirt, I like it. Colors are nice and there's some meaning to it beside "kewl dragons on a shirt." If it was rats, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like it nearly as much.

I really wish that this design would print, because I personally think that it is head and shoulders above any of the "dragon" designs in this derby. It reminds me of the "Fantastic Four" comic book artwork and I also love the illustration, coloring and dynamic composition.

Thanks so much for the support so far guys!

While the monsters are in fact dragons obviously, we did our best conceptually to make them a little more special than your typical dragon. While I'm intrigued at the idea of something like this done with elemental roosters, I don't think it would have had the same badass vibe we were going for.

Fair enough And, I can see what's unique in it, and as I said in another post on this thread, I love the shirt for being (in my opinion) the best illustration of the Wu Xing on this derby.

Re: Wu Xing

As far as actual designs go, I think this is one of the best around. The coloring is great, the design is clever, and the dragons are, for lack of a better word, "cool."

But I do think that, at least from far away (the shirt comp), it does look like one of those cheap Target shirts. Which is unfortunate, because I think the design is one of the best here, but as is sometimes the case, a great design in general does not always translate well as a shirt. I still voted for it though, since it deserves recognition.

i didnt mean it as "oh noes another dragon shirt, how l.ame and unoriginal". i think this is a great illustration, and it has a theme to it, and is therefore quite original actually.

what i mean by "it is still a dragon shirt" is twofold.

1. since dragons arent real, there is nothing to compare with, and all dragons youll ever have seen are drawings/animations. this means all dragon drawings have a certain element of realism in them, although it isnt realism as in a scientific sketch or a photograph. dragons exist in so many shapes and forms that it is hard to stand out, as there is no real image of the a single real dragon. a dragon drawn in an awesome style becomes just a "dragon drawing" much easier than something like a monkey drawn in the same awesome style. im more likely to think "what an awesome monkey drawing" in that case.

what this leads to is that when you illustrate dragons, stylization and character kind of drowns, and it all ends up looking more plain that it may have had other animals been used.

2. a little because of point number 1, dragon shirts rarely ooze awesome, and it takes something really special for a dragon shirt to get to that level. in this case, the design is more of an illustration. its cool in its own way, but its not really t-shirt material. it reminds me more of a kids shirt, or a drawing in a book or comic.

of course this is just my opinion, and i tried to explain it decently. once again, awesome illustration, it just doesnt translate very well to a t-shirt, and i do think other animals done using the same concept could have been better, be they monkeys, roosters, pigs, you name it, i have seen badass/awesome illustrations of all of them. i just think that with dragons, the talent put into the drawing drowns. people (that i know, including me) see just a dragon, instead of the amazing drawing style.

not saying a dragon shirt can never work, but it needs to be spectacular. this is more of a cool illustration on a shirt, than a spectacular dragon t-shirt.
