Re: What's for Dinner?
"Holy ****!" is the phrase you're looking for Mr. Owl.
Regardless of what my fellow Wooters think, I love this. I laughed at it throughout the night. Hopefully a few of you enjoy it equally.

Re: What's for Dinner?
I shudder to think what my kitty would do with such advanced weaponry!
Re: What's for Dinner?
I like the artwork, but I find the placement on the shirt a little off-- too high up? It kind of unbalances the design.
Re: What's for Dinner?
Hahahaha. I love the idea, and the Artwork
Little suggestion, Just I think the scale don't mach between the cat and the owl, or maybe is the perspective!.... but really it's an awesome work!

Where's the theme?
Re: What's for Dinner?
YES YES YES WANT WANT WANT.
I just hope the thumbnail doesn't hurt the design...if people don't bother to click they won't see how awesome it is...
Re: What's for Dinner?
He went all Sam Fisher on that owl man! Awesome idea sir, and I love your painted brush stroke style as always.
Re: What's for Dinner?
The expression on that owl is priceless!
Re: What's for Dinner?
ha! so very cat + great sideways leery glance from the owl.
DivineAna wrote:I like the artwork, but I find the placement on the shirt a little off-- too high up? It kind of unbalances the design.
Placement is just basic. They can print it there or lower. Just basic center chest. It's the first time I've heard it was too high though. Normally it's "Oh my God, but my boobies go there!"

Re: What's for Dinner?
Heh, I think the NVG is so very unnecessary, but I would love to see the cat using camo.
Tanapangarap wrote:Heh, I think the NVG is so very unnecessary, but I would love to see the cat using camo.
The NVG are what make me laugh. Camo could be cool but camo is pretty common. Any hunter is going to have it. But night-vision? That's a bit more hardcore. I mean, you know a guy is serious when he's equipping Night-vision. It also emphasizes the nocturnal element which is the point of the owl as opposed to just another cat or whatever. It doesn't matter how good Mr.Owl can see in the dark... Kitty-Kitty has him beat.
For me the goggles are the punchline of the design. Just the ridiculousness of it makes me laugh. So that's the reasoning for them being there and why I find them very necessary. Also Drakxxx, yes, I love me some Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six.
Thanks for the comment.

okay I'm sorry i usually never comment on designs even if they are completely awesome (which this one definitely is), but all of these comments are ridiculous and i had to say something. first of all the design is spectacular. the placement is awesome, the illustration is kick ass, the theme is definitely there, and in general it just made me laugh really really hard.
Oh and to Tanapangarap: are you serious?!?! the night vision goggles completely make the design. but whatever your opinion is your opinion and i respect that.
Oh and CrescentDebris this is really awesome

(And just so everyone is clear) My comments in response to critiques are NOT meant to say "You're wrong!". I just like to explain to anyone with concerns, what my intentions were and why it is what it is.
Thanks again everyone for your comments and support.
Re: What's for Dinner?
That is one adorable little owl! Love his expression. Both of them give me the impression of being babies/young with their proportions- a round owlet and a kitten. Not sure if that was intended, but boy, makes them awfully cute!
Sniper Kitty on the Loose!!!

warhawksrock05 wrote:Sniper Kitty on the Loose!!!
Hahahaha nice. I completely forgot about that. Must have been a litter of covert-op feline elites.
Re: What's for Dinner?
This is my favorite of the week, GMV!
Re: What's for Dinner?
Love the look of fear on the owl - that's why I clicked on the thumbnail, and the fur on the cat is just so right.
I think it's because of the fur that the goggles are needed. Yes, most cats see in the dark, but this one is just a soft sweet furry kitty, that the goggles make you sit back and say, WHOA! Wonder if My cat thinks that way too!
Great job, CD!
Re: What's for Dinner?
^_^
Owls and sniper catz are my faves.
I hope this wins.
Re: What's for Dinner?
This is one of my favorites in this derby.
Re: What's for Dinner?
Owls cannot turn their eyes, they are fixed in their socket. That is why their heads rotate 270 degrees.
Tomatoed wrote:Owls cannot turn their eyes, they are fixed in their socket. That is why their heads rotate 270 degrees.
Nor can they have expressions of fear or concern. It's a cartoon.
Re: What's for Dinner?
Cats cannot use night vision goggles, that is why they have tapetum lucidum to reflect light back to the retina cells. Cats also have an inability to use any sort of fire-arms (not just 'sniper rifles', they are also unable to use handguns of any sort, heavy artillery, shotguns, etc) which is why they have very highly developed reflexes and can pounce on their prey from remarkable heights, aided by their 'righting reflex'.
If you were shooting for realism, you failed miserably.
(the above, while true, in no way reflects my opinion on this marvelous design- having already cast my vote for it)
Re: What's for Dinner?
hilarious design. my only suggestion is that the goggles be looking more towards the owl.
iHaunter wrote:hilarious design. my only suggestion is that the goggles be looking more towards the owl.
Most valid comment I've seen in this thread.
While I'm not totally enamored of the style, the concept and drawing make me smile. Good job!
Re: What's for Dinner?
That is so many kinds of awesome I can't begin to describe it. Great work!

Yes, I almost did not click........
But I love Owls and decided to take a second look. AND I am a bigger CAT fan. So something is missing to attrack us in the Thumbnail view. You can not be baited to the true mystery . And here you WHERE ARE MY PANTS?! mystery . Robocats Revenge or Terminator Kitty: to draw people in to see it.
Still I LOVE the title!
Re: What's for Dinner?
I hate cats. Cute though.
CrescentDebris wrote:Hahahaha nice. I completely forgot about that. Must have been a litter of covert-op feline elites.
I think I have one from that litter...
I love this shirt, but I'd like the cat on the tree side of the branch and the owl on the outside...how did the cat get there past the owl?
mrsjamie wrote:I think I have one from that litter...

Jumped.
mrsjamie wrote:I think I have one from that litter...

Time 1: no animals on tree
Time 2: cat climbs tree
Time 3: cat goes toward end of branch, sits, puts on night vision goggles
Time 4: owl lands on branch
iHaunter wrote:hilarious design. my only suggestion is that the goggles be looking more towards the owl.
He was actually never intended to be looking at the owl. He's looking right past him. It's hard to explain but I think it makes the situation a lot creepier and uncomfortable. It's like "Ok, did he see me? Should I move? Or if I move will that alert him that I'm here? Oh **** now what?" It also enhances the idea that the cat is so badass he doesn't even need to pay him any attention. Or maybe he's just toying with him. I guess the subtle vibe I was trying for was that the cats intentions are unknown. Hopefully most people are catching that.
As for where he came from I'll add a few more possibilities to the list that others have started.
1. Was already a branch higher and dropped down
2. Jumped from the rooftop just off screen
3. Appeared out of nowhere thanks to his opti-camo technology.
As for the thumbnail as a couple have mentioned, I DID consider using the cat. I believe it would get more clicks but since the derby was pretty sparse (only about 70 or 80 when I subbed as opposed to the normal 150 or so at that time) I just felt that it would be more rewarding to get the punchline on the fullview instead of going "Oh, there's a scared owl there too"
Yes, its a gamble and I think there probably will be some people that would like the design but will never click it but I think the payoff for those that do choose to check it out is worth it. I obviously would like to win but that's not my only motivation for entering these contests. Thanks for the concern though.
And thanks to the rest of you that have given praise. Much appreciated.
And I love this!

Re: What's for Dinner?
10 bags of awesome here. I love this design so much. The Cat is so menacing and yet so understated with it. Genius!
Re: What's for Dinner?
I love this one. The cat is scanning like any other predator...but he has seriously one upped the owl.
Re: What's for Dinner?
Awesome, awesome, awesome. Very nice job here CrescentDebris. GMV.
Re: What's for Dinner?
I love the ambiguity of this design, especially the sort of uncomfortable "what now" expression of the owl. There might even be the option of an uneasy alliance here...
Re: What's for Dinner?
Hahaha, simply amazing!
I love-love-love this design. In response to some of the comments above, to me, it's not a question of cat-stalking-owl.
This is just one night predator one-upping the other. I could totally see my cat sitting on a branch or a tree, competing with an owl to see who can get the most kills on one night.
The side-eye that owl is throwing the cat totally makes it, though. I would buy multiples of this design.
Love it!
Re: What's for Dinner?
shouldn't the cat be on the other side of the owl for this to make sense?
Re: What's for Dinner?
Like the shirt
Don't like the goggles
like the owl's expression
Re: What's for Dinner?
LOL
Re: What's for Dinner?
I looked at this during my chemistry class and let out the biggest "HA!" when I clicked the thumbnail.
Greatness. Simply, greatness.
