Nice. I actually laughed pretty loud at work after seeing a close up of the second and third pictures.

Technically wouldn't the vampire not be visible in a picture. I don't know I'm not up to par on vampire lore.

It's certainly extreme folly, and I think I see some madness in Dracula's eyes as the photo is being taken. Plus, he must have had a few screws loose to go into the photo booth in the first place. :P

This is great but the one thing that's getting me is the bat fade in orange. I think it distracts from the awesome

Also, I am not sure why this is "off topic" and something like "The Clockmaker" is not....

Too bad, this shirt IS a great design, that IS on topic, and per your statement and the provided closeup, uses halftones, NOT gradients.

I respectfully hope woot explains the true reason for this rejection.

Dang. It's a shame to see this at the bottom of the list with the other rejects. You have a great style, and though I probably wouldn't have purchased the shirt, I appreciate the work put in to it as well as the obscure vintage vampire reference. I disagree with Woot 110% about why it was rejected, but I think we can all agree we want to keep seeing more from you!

Oh fudge, this doesn't seem fair.

I made this especially for the derby thinking hard about a moment of madness. And I clearly wrote and showed the halftone dots, both here and in the submission message to Woot. All that effort... ;_;

Ugh! I am completely disappointed. This was my favorite shirt in a long time, and I certainly would have purchased one (or more). Fantastic job!

I understand the off-topic part of the rejection, but the gradients part is a bit strange. The comp seems to show that they are definitely halftones and are no smaller than what a lot of people are using and printing these days, possibly even larger. A nice illustration nonetheless. Best of luck in the future.

Bummer dude. You did a great job on this, I can see the off topic and you basically got the ban hammer because your in the fog and probably doing well (so keep this guy around for a halloween derby) the gradients I can also see. Yes while there have been many gradients being tossed around if I had to make a call on this it'd be because the halftone pattern you use doesn't alternate in consistency from left to right all along the length from top to bottom (does that make since).

In other pieces with fine halftones they group up in blobs or follow contours etc. and don't cover such large areas. Because of that you have a lot more potential with printing problems. You stand a good chance of having a lot of the dots get blown out or having major moire (dot pattern interferance) issues which are more noticable because of the large dot pattern area that doesn't have much variation (it's a smooth transition over a large area).

My advice to you and EVERYONE is keep halftones limited if you use them or make them chunky(30 lpi or less) also don't fill large areas with the same halftone or smooth transition without adding some texture or alternation or halftone values. If this doesn't make sense PM me and I'll try to explain better. Keep up the great work though!

I hate to talk down on such a well-done design, but I've got to agree with tgentry here. The comment from Woot about gradients is bogus for sure, but my first thought when I saw this design was "great design, funny, but I don't see the theme."

Hopefully you'll either get an HM or be able to re-sub it to a future derby where it is more on-theme.

Woot can't do all half tones nor all gradients. It says clearly on the entry form that both are discouraged - for now.

I'm upset that when they rejected this, they left up "ailuraphobia", the woman about to hammer a cat. Disgusting. I would rather have a funny off-topic shirt than an upsetting X-rated-for-violence on-topic shirt.

tjost, I totally understand what you're saying. Although Woot wouldn't necessarily have had an issue with the halftone if they'd understood that's what it was, and recent winners like Sublime and Stone Temple Pilots have used it all over their backgrounds, I realize that it's something I'm going to have to be much more careful or sparing with.

I felt sure I was on theme using madness as folly rather than insanity or weirdness, in future I'll just have to try to be on topic in a more straightforward way.

From the grave... I will return!

The problem with choosing the "extreme folly" definition of "madness" is that the rest of the derby description is pretty clear that they're looking for depictions of insanity specifically, not just any meaning of madness.

As another example, I'm pretty sure you also would have been rejected had you submitted a shirt depicting someone that was really angry, even though "rage" is one of the definitions of madness.

I think the lesson here is that it's important to pay heed to the full derby description, not just the title.

Insanity gets sort of romanticized as the ultimate creative force in movies and television today, but there's more than a slight difference between the savant with poor manners and the guy talking to his deity of choice via his Alphabits. So for this derby show us madness: the voices in someone's head, the swirl of hallucinated hecklers following your every move, or...something else. Yeah, you could draw a lonely-looking guy in a straight-jacket, but we'd rather see you conceptualize actual madness. That's high-brow, right? Finally, no one will have any reason to complain in the comments! Of course, even the criminally insane have their limits...

I don't know about that.. there is a shirt in this derby that shows a bracket and a basketball. Granted it probably won't win, but it isn't rejected! (yet?)

"Not on topic" is such a random (subjective) call that does not appear to be evenly applied to all submissions, and you did not have gradients.... unfortunately, they can not set the president of changing their minds...there would be no getting your lost votes back.

ON THE UP SIDE....everyone is talking about YOU and your wonderful design, and we will be looking forward to seeing more Spiritgreen submissions!

Fit the design in another derby, please, I love it and I want the shirt!!!

I was extremely disappointed to check today's winners and find that this shirt had been rejected... I thought it was surely a first place shirt (not to mention totally on-topic). Even if it were a third place shirt, I'd have bought it. Hopefully you'll find a place to re-submit the design so no one loses... you get your winner, we get to buy it, and woot gets to sell it.
