Re: Ghost Ship Dream

The first person I thought of in connection with madness was Van Gogh. In a letter he wrote: "In my mental or nervous fever, or madness - I am not too sure how to put it or what to call it - my thoughts sailed over many seas. I even dreamed of the phantom Dutch ship and of Le Horla..."

That put the visual in my head and I wanted to portray what he might have seen during that experience.

It applies to him as much to the rest of us - If you're seeing stuff like this, well then, you're crazy.

A bit of a stretch don't you think? I suppose I could of entered a shirt with a potato on it and added the caption - "If you think this is an onion, well then, you're crazy."

Nice shirt but I feel like it fails at the challenge.

Nicely done - but I don't think it is on theme....

I think it's on theme, and I'm not just saying that because Jewel's ship illustrations are amazing. The spider webs and tentacles beneath tell me something isn't quite right with the ship.

I think this is really good, but like your title I'm getting more of a ghost/haunted feel then any connection to madness. Great work as usual though.

The first thing I connected it to was Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" (no lack of 'madness' in that one!):

Beyond the shadow of the ship,
I watched the water-snakes :
They moved in tracks of shining white,
And when they reared, the elfish light
Fell off in hoary flakes.

Thanks Drakxxx! I thought I used enough details to make the mood and tell the story, but maybe I got so caught up in the story in my head that it didn't turn out as obvious as it seemed to me.

Good one!

And for you "not on theme" sayers, there's a lot of intertwining between the ghost ship stories and "madness at sea" stuff. Just take the Pirates movies. Thats clearly about ghost ships, but there's also an element of madness in all the characters. Madness is so much associated with sea stories that the thought of it being off theme didn't even cross my mind. If it had, I would have crazied it up more.

I agree. You did a beautiful job. It's eerie and has a very dark moodiness to it. Wonderful work as always.

Jewelwing I am going to buy todays woot for my nephew but I want to buy it tomorrow so you get 2 bucks, but what if it sells out!!

I so love your beautiful ships. Here is a laugh for you...last week when I was working on my MOtley Crue ship I worried to my daughter age 6 that it looked too much like jewelwings ship shirt we bought(I was worried that the colors were too similar...)
With such a serious face she said to me, "No, mommy, your ship is NOTHING like Jewelwings boat!" ( IT was so funny at the time- I pretty much threw in the towel at that point!)

I hope the harbor near your house has some tshirts of yours for sale for the tourists, it's a crime if they don't!!

Sail on and up jewelwing ship -girl!!
