A little late to the party, but S stands for SAMURAI SHOWDOWN.

This is yet another team up between Crescentdebris and myself.

Once again, Drakxxx, very nice collab. I love the fact that you effectively use cream colored shirts. Voted.

Thank you for choosing "S*** SAMURAI!" It's brown and stinks. I understand if it doesn't get 100% praise. This was seriously a last minute deal last night and unfortunately my time on it got cut short due to personal reasons. It didn't get my normal polish and refinement time. Hopefully some of you like it though. Later my fellow wooters.

Don't kid yourself. Last minute or not, this is a gorgeous piece. I love the samurai's stance, the classic gruff look on his face, and the dusty browns are perfect for the Samurai concept. Also, lets face the facts. If you guys made it red, you'd be hearing complaints that it's to violent and can't be worn.

Hoping The Clockmaker sticks a plug in woot's cute madness this evening as well.

I do as well. The brown shades look awesome on this, and as another commenter mentioned, the dusty brown palette is pitch perfect for a feudal Japan theme. I honestly don't think any other color scheme would have worked nearly as well.

Excellent work as always gentlemen.

I normally love you guys' work to bits, and have nothing but respect for you both as artists, but I'm sorry to say I'm just not feeling this one. The brown/cream combo *could* work, theoretically, but the splattery (is that actually a word?) background here just looks a bit too messy.

From a distance, my concern is that the shirt will just look more like someone's had an unfortunate accident down their front, and the actual design (which isn't badly drawn at all) will become a bit lost.

I really, *really* hate to use the phrase "squidgy scat on a shirt" (despite its alliterative 'S' sounds!), but I can't help thinking back to the scathing critiques for this other brown print: http://shirt.woot.com/Friends.aspx?k=7279

Not my fave from you two, but it still rocks. The palette is just a little subtle - IMO could have used a pop somewhere. Doesn't matter - I would wear the hell out of this. GMV!

Personally, I find this shirt to be one of, if not the best in this derby. I am a huge fan of your style and color schemes and am hoping this prints. To those who think that the colors don't jump enough: while I disagree, it just means you get to laugh at the people who do a double-take.

I'm all for this. Even if it could be mistaken for a s*** smear, this would be the coolest smear ever.

Excellent job both of you. I'm all for the brown color, and I may even be willing to wear a cream shirt. Woo!

paigeg wrote:Not my fave from you two, but it still rocks. The palette is just a little subtle - IMO could have used a pop somewhere. Doesn't matter - I would wear the hell out of this. GMV!

The lack of a pop comes from the fact that this is only 4 colors. I've never NOT used all 6. It's always at the end when I do all the refinement and polish that it really stands out. My time on it was cut short though I'm afraid. But, with the very nature of the piece being messy I think it manages to work. And it's possible that if I went all the way with it that it might have been overdone. Anyway, I haven't talked to Drakxxx about it but I'm all for a re-sub with "significant changes" in a later derby if this doesn't find a print.

I greatly appreciate the honest comments too. I'm glad most of you really like this and I'm equally glad that the rest of you are speaking your minds. Our fans like to "Keep it Real" I see! Hell yeah. Thanks!

Re: SAMURAI SHOWDOWN

I'd love to see this again at a later date, though I'm not sure how much you'd have to change it to be "significant".

If the samurai was more clearly visable, maybe a *little* less splatter so it's not so messy. But I do like some splatter if it was reddish and highlighted the bloody swath our hero just cut through his enemies.

I know there is beauty in fewer colors at times, I just think it this case it detracts from the detail.

You have to make a purchase from Woot before you can vote. Then you will see a little button above the submission that says "I'd Want One", hit that and you've voted.

This is one of my favorites that you've done. Seriously great. The layout, the colors, the dynamic pose. Really solid. I know I've said this before, but I would love to see your process on these pieces... the layering is really great.

I will second some of the comments... I love sepia tones. Really tough to do. But I think this is pretty successful.

The only thing is the feet look a little muddled. Not enough to really bother me, but the back leg seems a bit off.

That being said, as usual the two of you rock.

I know you're talking about Drakxxx but I can say with our collabs it always starts with one of his sketches. It always takes me forever to come up with something but he seems to be able to knock out a wicked layout in no time.

He'll send me a sketch. I'll either just start coloring with no edits, make a small change, or we'll toss the drawing back and forth.

"Clockmaker" was one that I made no changes too. I just did minimal clean up and colors. Same with "Close Your Eyes" from the Nightmare derby.

For "Zombie Doom Squad" I redrew the girl but left everything else exactly as it was.

I think Drakxxx will agree that "Wu Xing" was a pain in the ass. We tossed that one back and forth a few times. And doing the coloring was really tough with only 5 colors left (after black) to color 5 different dragons and not make it look flat.

"Alice in Chains" was all Drakxxx for the line art. Then I did the colors.

And for this one, it was different. Drakxxx contributed to the color. The drawing he sent me was already brown on creme. And I contributed to the line art (for better or worse) by flipping the image, dressing the guy in armor and giving him legs. Here's a shot or 3 different stages of "Samurai Showdown"

Re: SAMURAI SHOWDOWN

Thanks for the support as always everyone.

My FF11 Online character's job was SAMURAI. Man did I play the heck out of that game. It's been a few years since I last played it, but every now and then I have this dream were I see the text log from the game scrolling, and I hear the distinct sound of the samurai's GREAT KATANA striking something that will yield me pittly exps.

...anyways I couldn't think of what to do for S, so I prepared to go to bed with my woot dreams possibly unfulfilled for the week, when I had previously mentioned dream. I woke up and said SAMURAI! I'LL DRAW YOU!

The colors were actually inspired by the recent Takashi Miike file "Sukiyaki Western Django", which had a dusty, obviously western influence to it.

Giving the guy legs and armor was definitely the way to go man. And yeah, the elemental dragon design was quite the project, but a blast all the way.
