Re: The Origin of the Species

Hey guys, got this re-fitted and largely edited to better stand out on a shirt.

Thank you so very much for the helpful comments earlier. I am not used to working with such few colors, and especially on backgrounds of these colors!

I think you guys are going to find that this is a much superior design! I hope that you up-vote it if you like it. I've put a lot of heart and time into the different stages of its design!

...btw, I tried to take down my old entry, but there's no X next to it. I can't figure it out!

Thank you! I just now realized that it would be even stronger if I made the, uh.. momma duck's hair yellow. I would definitely want to change that, but I'm not real cool with resubmitting AGAIN. I might be a newb at this derby stuff, but I'm pretty sure that that is just a step backwards..

In my original design I was trying to add an additional joke into the mix by having the dad be yellow and the mom be blue, making a green platypus. But I was sacrificing way too much to try and get that across. Glad some fellow wooters got me to come to my senses!

it's much better now. I agree with the yellow momma duck, but this is a great piece.

Awesome characters. The framing of the design is very cool.

I love the characters, they are very well done. I think you could have included a bit more color in the parents and surrounding animals without losing the focus on the platypus; but I can definitely tell what you were going for.

I'm not a fan of the huge block of gray ink. Also, for future reference, shirt.woot considers initials and the year as text and it may be rejected for that reason.

Overall, a great first entry, and I look forward to future derbies! ;)

Hey, this is very good artwork. The concept is funny, but unfortunately, it's been played upon by all sorts of t-shirts, including two from woot.

Don't let this lower your hopes though! It's not rejected, and it is very well drawn. Great job!

Wow, thank you for that input! I never would have even considered that. Would be a shame if any future entries get their feet off the ground, but get rejected because I like to sign my work!

Probably just saved me a lot of heartache; thank you!

Your characters are really well drawn. I do think a little more color in the parents (without doing the blue+yellow=green thing -- maybe color the features the child got from each parent in the child's colors?) would help.
Also agree that the big area of grey takes away from the design instead of adding to it. There's probably a good way to do that, but I'm not sure what it would be.

Wasn't this a derby winner before for family?
