Re: A Peculiar Discovery
I'm not even going to address the sudden return of the mongoose-ness. I'm sure others will do that for me.
However, I will say the feet of the standing penguin look sloppy.
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
Well, at least they have actual expressions and not just blank faces!

Ahahahaha! So that's what the filter uses mongoose for!! cheebee!!! XD

The penguin is pidgeon toed?
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
Is this a collaboration with Kenney? I kinda see a pucker in there.

Hehe, I don't think they have too much to worry about. Springtime in Antartica is still on the chilly side. :^)

Too bad these penguins don't look like any species that actually live in Antarctica.
Why is the penguin eyeing something to his left suspiciously when all the action is to his right?

Re: A Peculiar Discovery
Like warhawk mentioned, there's some serious problems with the eyes in those penguins... Neither are actually looking at the plant. The one on the ground is looking up while the one standing is... uhm... looking in two directions at once. And neither direction is towards the plant.
Oh... the one laying down looks like he'll have a hard time getting up... seeing as his feet aren't attached to legs... just a long torso.
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
OH MAI GAUSH!!!! -falls over convulsing on the ground before giving into the cuteness overload coma!!!!!!
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
I like this one a lot.
warhawksrock05 wrote:Why is the penguin eyeing something to his left suspiciously when all the action is to his right?
It's part of the winning formula, look it up.
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
I like this one not a bit.
warhawksrock05 wrote:Why is the penguin eyeing something to his left suspiciously when all the action is to his right?
To be fair here, looking in another direction to convey that one is contemplating something isn't uncommon. While Ramy's designs are usually chock full of things that merit criticism (this one included) that aspect doesn't.
But if you want to pick apart the blobby penguins or the kawaii-ness of it all, feel free.

The problem I have with the eyes is either the anatomy or the angle. The standing penguin has a very slanted left eye. I understand the use of a single creased brow to covey confusion, which I get from this at first glance. However, if you look at the pupils/iris, the penguin's right eye is looking away, yet his left eye is looking down at the plant.
Either RamyB didn't mean to do such a slanted [left] eye and wanted to show two eyes looking away [towards penguin's right, or our left], or he screwed up.
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
The only problem I have is that it's on black. I have way too many black shirts now and refuse to buy anymore. This would look good on that light blue color that you have as a background. So while I do like it, I can't give my vote because of the black shirt. Sorry.

Awesome!!!!!!!!!

thank you for quoting me, because my post seems to have mysteriously disappeared.
I didn't think it was inflammatory, just my opinion.
Ramy, I've always said that you have skill and can illustrate from a wide range. BUT, ramy, I also think that you way-too-often don't utilize the skill you have. This obviously didn't take you very long, and I don't think it's mean or cruel to point that out.
I think you are short-changing the derby-goers, and it seems that you slap-dashed an entry to help fund your schooling. (which, by the way, I hope is going well).

Well said. I'm sure there are quite a few of us that would want to say it the same way. Not mean, just sincere.
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
They look angry! :O
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
I wish you would stop using halftones in your backgrounds. It seems like you do it every time, and I really don't think it adds anything to the design.
Oxyminoan wrote:And will probably fog while other more-deserving designs will be left out in the cold. (forgive the pun)
Where are these more deserving shirts of which you speak?
I see 4 shirts in the entire derby that I would even consider buying.
Sakura Samurai
Most adorable engagement (parody but still adorable)
Boxes and pipes??! (rejected)
and this one.
Then again the fail crowd (those that hate Ramby and Seki) have been gaining ground lately, so less quality shirts have been getting printed than should have.
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
penguins!
adorable...and i like the curious expressions...
where'd they get the magnifying glass?? :P jk
nicely done
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
i think it's a clever design.
i dont get all the knocks against this shirt, but then again i'm new.

Well, given the fact that they haven't entered the last two derbies probably has something to do with that too.

The Chalice, Sakura Sauce, and Transformation off the top of my head.
All are superior designs and executed much better.
I'm not a Ramy or Seki hater by any means. This design is sloppy (as pointed out by others above) and is getting by on nothing more than "Oooooh Penguins! Yay CUuuUuuuTe" votes. There's a reason why the majority of their shirts are chib(i)(love that woot filters chib now, btw) animal shirts: because there is an audience for it. Can't knock them for catering. However, have some respect for that audience and for yourself as an artist and take some time to produce something that looks a little better than a speed sketch taken through Illustrator filters.
That's all.
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
I would buy 5
Oxyminoan wrote:The Chalice, Sakura Sauce, and Transformation off the top of my head.

Those 3 shirts have great designs, and they would look great on my wall. As far as shirts go, they just don't cut it and I wouldn't wear them if they were free.
I guess this is where we differentiate. In my opinion art belongs on a wall or in a gallery. Sweetness and cuteness belong on shirts.
As far as Draxx goes, I love his work and wished he won more often (I own 6 or 7 of his shirts). He falls under the sweetness side while Ramby and Seki fall under both sweetness and cuteness (mainly cuteness though). I own 1 TGentry shirt, and think that he is a very good artist, but his shirts are usually too much of wall art for my tastes.
raevynpheather wrote:Those 3 shirts have great designs, and they would look great on my wall. As far as shirts go, they just don't cut it and I wouldn't wear them if they were free.
Most of the designs I prefer to wear, you would prefer on your wall. Fine. I can respect that. And while I cannot fathom how people find Ramyb's designs cute and/or wearable, I'm willing to agree to disagree on that.
What drives me nuts is how this seeming pittance of a disagreement is what causes you to lump all those who disagree with you as spoons. "The Fail Crowd" (really?). There are many designs I can appreciate artistically without wanting to wear them. When they win, I don't call it a drop in quality, or insult their supporters.
Your definition of quality is mind-numbingly limited, and you seem to say truly ignorant things as a result. It's not the same as critics of Ramy. Their criticisms, harsh as they can be, are pretty much always rooted in actual problems with the design. They don't generalize and leap to conclusions like you do so often.
Absolutely hilarious. Crossing my fingers for this one!
AngelVixen :-)
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
It's cute. I'd wear it.
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
argh! my eyes! way too cute for my tastes...
I'm sure lots of others will like it tho
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
Personally, I think the shirt's cute. To the person who complained that it didn't look like any of the species that live in Antarctica... it's a t-shirt.

The clue being what? That the ten seconds it would take to pull up a reference photo of a penguin would've been time poorly spent? It probably would've doubled the total amount of time that was spent on this design, I'll give you that.
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
The standing penguin looks confused as to what the plant is, yet he isnt even looking at it.
CoryBlink wrote:The standing penguin looks confused as to what the plant is, yet he isnt even looking at it.
what is wrong with all you people criticizing this? seriously, if it's in the fog, it's there for a reason. the exact direction of the eyes or skill used in drawing the penguins doesn't matter. this is a lot better than i could ever do. i like it!
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
The impression I got from the eyes is the white parts are not where they are looking, but rather the reflection of light glinting off. In a cursory glance at penguin pictures on google, the eyes seemed to be all black.

SOULESS!!!!
That describes it perfectly.
Mediocrity written all over this.

Actually, it looks quite a bit like an Adelie penguin, which is the Southernmost penguin in the world (it has colonies even farther south than the Emperor, which is the penguin typically associated with deep Antarctica). Does it look exactly like one? No. But it is very similar, and the white face (Adelies have black faces) is the most common way to portray them because black eyes on a black face is very hard to show.
Also, about the feet/no legs thing - penguins have INCREDIBLY short legs - you usually cannot see them. Still, penguins are able to easily transition from lying down to standing, and they move between the two modes often.
With those things said, I agree that the actual design isn't done that well. I'm a huge penguin fan, and a fan of the "cute" shirts, but this one simply has a lot of flaws that could have been easily remedied.

no one else has pointed this out, so i will.
the statement quoted above seems to suggest that only ramyb and sekiyoku make quality shirts. is that what youre trying to say? or are you trying to say that only artists who make shirts that looks like ramyb's or sekiyoku's make quality shirts? or are you trying to say that people who dislike ramyb and sekiyoku's designs have bad taste in shirts?
i just want to know before i get any deeper into your comment
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
I swear my whole wardrobe is going to be Penguin t-shirts by the end of the year.
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
i think its a fun design. not really my style but a good job anyway.
definitely riding the cutesy train all the way to the station, and i have seen better work from ramyb (heck, ive BOUGHT better work of ramyb's) but a strong entry regardless.
not sure its as strong as some of the others that have not made the fog and it helps to confirm the suspicion ive had that there is a certain amount of voting based on artist and not design quality (something which has been bugging me for a while).
still... nice work!
JadenKale wrote:I find this sad that artists like Drakxxx and Travis (TGentry) don't past your muster as "quality". They have more talent in one finger... nay, in one hair follicle, than ramy or seki do in their entire collective.
It's been discussed, long before your fawning over these two, of their cheating in other venues, rule-breaking, manipulating votes and having a generally rude attitude towards anyone who questions the validity of their "on-topic" pieces in these competitions.

Quoting this for real talk.

You have a good argument with the other stuff you wrote, but this statement is completely personal/bias and is invalid to make your points. Drakxxx had two Cthulhu shirts print recently. Should he not have done that? Quality aside, and yes they were very well done, and I'm not comparing designers here, but it happens. There is nothing wrong with having the same animal/item/whatever in designs if they are different. How many people have done numerous robot shirts, or shirts with skulls on them? I could go on, but I think/hope you get my point.
Re: A Peculiar Discovery
I do not have a problem with the penguins - I am sure I could buy this shirt for my wife and she would like it. I get the cartoony style he is going for and have no problem with somebody who sticks to what he can do.
But I do agree that the standing penguin has a problem with her eyes and feet and think that maybe a bit more time and a resub could help.
