Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
This was an entry had wanted to do for the Earth Day derby, but time just wouldn't allow me to put the effort into it that I really wanted. I wanted this to be extra nice, so thankfully Woot gave us this theme, and a little more time to work with
The concept here was that this little mouse's home forrest was burnt down. For a very long time there was no life and he was alone. Then a tiny miracle happened, and though the mouse was small, he wanted to guard the newborn sprout with his own life.
Sappy, I know...but this is what I had thought of
Also, I tried a new style here, one that I'm not quite used to. I need a little practice, but I really had fun doing it. I hope you enjoy it
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
This is excellent!
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Dawww-www! Real artistry at work here, bassanimation and as cute as all get out without any sugar. The little guy doesn't even have four tines on his fork, but he's not going to let anything get past him.
My favorite so far!
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Looks great bass!
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
great use of color, and fun concept
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Beautiful! The texturing on the little hero's fur is great.
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Cuuutee!! See, cute can be done in a realistic and detailed way. You don't always have to have plump, round animals with little button eyes. Plus, I really like that he's guarding the plant
GMV, goodluck!
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
I love the way you did the ground. It's neat that just a few lines can denote so much.
my favorite of the derby so far... AMAZING job
Bass, your realism shirts always look great and this one is definitely par for the course.
One tiny criticsm - I know his ears are going through hole in his nut helmet, but they look more like they are growing out of it.
That aside - Got My Vote!
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Aww, this is really nice looking. I love how you did the little mouse's fur texture. The fork and the tin can lid are great little touches.

Thanks for the crit! I think I see a little of what you mean. I tried to get everything correct but alas, sometimes I miss things. Unfortunately I don't think I can resubb a fix at this point. I'm not sure if the design will hang on or not, but if not I will revisit it and see about that area.
Glad you like the image over all!
Thank you for your support everyone!
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Lovely Design!!
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Killer detail! Cute but in the non-sickening way. Awesome work.
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Very cute! I like the style.
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Bass', I meant to say earlier how much I enjoy your designs on a brown shirt. I'm wearing your Fallout Zoo today for the first time and it looks brilliant.
I hope this wins. ^_^
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Very nice! Reminds me of The Tale of Despareaux. Fun movie if you haven't seen it.
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Your best yet, in my opinion. Great job.
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Bass, please teach me how to draw and a perfect character just like you do! he is full of live!

it's amazing

Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
One of your best work, great job bass!
This makes my heart happy. I really like how you added the texture to the mouse. It reminds me a lot of my favorite children's book illustrator Steven Kellog.
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
heck yeah!
this shirt is awesomes!
at first i didnt check it because it looked to just be another cutesy shirt and im not really into those much, but the rest of the design totally makes up for any cutesy factor.
nice work!
Reminds me of Redwall! Haven't thought of that series in quite a while. Very nice =]
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Amazing style bassanimation - wow! Love the little walnut helmet

Ah thanks SG! Im glad you liked the Squirrel shirt! It sure is a conversation starter, hahaha. Brown has always been one of my very favorite apparel colors. It's my favorite to do art for too ![]()

Hi everyone!
I want to give you all a huuuge thank you for your support here for this design. I took a few risks with it that I feared would be big downfalls, but I'm really, really thrilled everyone is enjoying it
. This type of art style is not my forte, so I tend to not try it very often.
Also, this design has a bit of sentimental meaning to me, so I wanted to make it extra special. It means a lot to me that so many people like it. ;_;
There's a ton of great designs here this week, I feel extraordinarily lucky to be doing so well. Thank you so much everyone!

Thank you! And, I loooved the design of the mice and rats in Despereaux! My boyfriend also worked in the studio that made the DS game. I think I played it to death just for the adorable rodenty-ness.

Thank you! It's really ironic you mention the cutesy being a detractor for the shirt. I was honestly not expecting it to do well due to the cute animal factor. ^^; I tried to temper it a bit by going in a more realistic style. I'm glad people seem to be ok with this type of cutey-mc-cutepants.

W: (and what is your first name, dude?) It's a style thing. I LOVE your style. I STILL want to proudly sport that snail and tortoise at the gym. And Bass's style (this Derby - she is a chameleon!) is entirely different, but just as engaging.
Be you, dude. You is awesome! Unless you just want to learn something new, in which case, rock it! But don't feel Bass is 'better'. She has a ton of talent, and so do you - personally, I wish both of you printed ahead of most of the dreckkk that sells (puking clouds? sorry, it just makes me fear for the future of our nation, given the demographic i think is voting for these things....)
/rant! Sorry! Didn't mean to proselytize. Just be sure, W, your art is awesome and appreciated. Especially when you stretch.

Check my post to walzaman. To expand, you're little warrior is wonderfully crafted. And the simplicity of the rest makes him so much more compelling. You have a great eye and a great talent. I sure hope you do this stuff for a living (illos), cause that talent is totally wasted on Woot (not that we don't love it and appreciate it!). I'm just saying...

Girl, there's cute, and then there's >bleah-retch-ZOmelets made great my diabetes-PENguins!<
Srsly, consider working more with this particular character. I could see him in a rugrats' book on environmentalism. The little critters couldn't resist the cover, and they'd make their Mom's buy it. And, oh, yeah, OK so they MIGHT learn something they'd remember later in life.
Yes, I am childless. How could you tell? Doesn't mean I ain't rite.
I LOVE this and I hope it prints.
That is all.
I love this shirt! This is the only shirt out of this whole derby that I would actually buy. There are a few other good designs, but this is the only one I could see myself wearing. Great job!
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
I have uploaded a large version of this image to my server if anyone would like to see
. It's fairly big so I'm just posting the link so as not to bogg anyone's computer down. ^^; Enjoy!

It would be really neat to do a series of drawings of the little forrest meeces
. I am such a nerd for anything rodenty ^^;. I also really like doing the little belts and tiny tools. So much fun!

I work as a video game artist, but I rarely get a chance to do work like this little guy. I actually owe Woot a very big thank you for allowing me an outlet to do this type of art
. This site has been awesome in that it pushes me to do things I normally don't get to do, or normally wouldn't try to do. The derbies are a great way to challenge yourself and to see what you can do differently each week. ![]()

Yay, the bear has life after the Reckoning! I'm glad you had a chance to get one :D. It will always hold a special place in my heart. I would like to make a follow-up illustration of it just for fun.

Fantastic illustration and design!

What a great design and concept. Definitely has my vote and $$. Really hope it prints.

. I am a huge sucker for anything about rodents. Secret of NIMH still slays me..*_*
I didn't have Mouseguard in mind when I drew this, but I became aware of the similarities when I started refining it a bit. I tried to make the design of the mouse here very different from the Mouseguard designs. I hope you are ok with it
.
At least it doesn't look like a Skaven ^^. Whuaarr!

The Secret of NIHM is awesome. I just found out recently that they have it on Hulu for free =)
Bass, I know you're an animal lover- check out this thread for some fun pictures, and put some pictures up of your ratties!

Oh cool! I would love to put up some pics :D. A couple of poor Wooters who watch me on Facebook have been subjected to my ratty ravings and photos, hahaha. Sorry guys! ^^;
I think that this (if it wins) will be the first shirt that I buy for my personal use and not for somebody else. At first I was considering it to be a little too cute for a 19-year-old guy to wear and then I thought about it and realized that the main idea behind it almost negates the cute factor and makes for a completely epic shirt. On a separate note I really wish I was capable of designing anything remotely close to this amazing.
Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Cute! Kind of reminds me of Redwall a little.

Thank you so much. I'm really flattered that you enjoy the design, and understand the message behind it.
I realize it's a cute critter shirt on the surface, but I wanted it to be about something a little more serious. A lot of creatures on the planet have had to endure the loss of their home, including human beings. I am fortunate to have not had to live through something like that, yet. But I can imagine it must be utterly heartbreaking.
Thanks again for your nice comment. ![]()

Thanks again for your nice comment.
This is the kind of artistry that can rise above pop culture references and stand on its own merit. This was the shirt my vote went to, and I wish you the best. The concept on the turtles shirt is pretty clever, but I suspect you'll win out. I believe I recall you telling megsck that you're in animation too. That's awesome! If you have any advice, I'd love to learn a thing or two from you.
Good Luck!

Re: Earth Derby: The Tiny Guardian
Hi everyone!
I wanted to come and tell you all thank you one last time before the derby closes. I never thought in a million years the Tiny Guardian would get this kind of support! It means very much to me, as I tried so many new things this go round. With all the great entries, I feel very flattered to be in the top 10. :D
Thank you, thank you!! If the Tiny Guardian makes it to print, maybe he will inspire more people to join his efforts to protect small, precious things.
