This is inspired by the art of Rick Griffin (like my last handful of entries), all of the lettering was done by hand.
Re: Grateful Ed's Fish Tacos
Amazing work, as usual. As an avowed vegetarian, I can't see myself wearing this, but GMV for a job well-done, regardless.
Re: Grateful Ed's Fish Tacos
Great odysseyroc! Love the little details and your handdrawn lettering is off the charts awesome. ^__^

Yes! Taquitos de pescado! mmmmm! +1

Where I come from, fish is considered a vegetable.
Re: Grateful Ed's Fish Tacos
LOVE IT! GMV!
I am determined to wear a taco shirt by you.

heh, awesome! My wife thinks I have an unhealthy obsession with tacos.

there is probably not such a thing as an unhealthy obsession with tacos.
Re: Grateful Ed's Fish Tacos
Awesome design.
Did you ever wind up doing anything with "arms go here"? If you have, it's cool. If not, I might take a crack.
Re: Grateful Ed's Fish Tacos
I just had some tacos. They were delicious. Now I want this shirt because it is also delicious. Really nice work, Odysseyroc!
AdderXYU wrote:there is probably not such a thing as an unhealthy obsession with tacos.
You are correct. Tacos are natures perfect food.

Thanks Fish, I'm really happy with how this design came out. This is the part of friday where I start my slow slide to 35th-40th place.

I didn't end up having time, stupid deadlines.

No way! I have high hopes for you this week. It's a solid design with honest appeal. I have an idea for a design but haven't had time to work on it yet. I may end up skipping this week. There's already so much talent here :-)

But WHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY - I'm gonna stamp my feet and whine like my 3 year old. I WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANT OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONE!!!
Dear Shirt, please go back into the fog. Thank you.
Re: Grateful Ed's Fish Tacos
I just moved from LA to New York, and am suddenly very hungry for some good fish tacos. Great job! I love the expression of tired indifference on the fish (or at least that's what it looks like to me).

Yeah, I went through that moving from LA to St Louis. If you cook, I have a pretty awesome Fish Taco recipe. Where were you at in LA?
So many to pick from!
I think this with Taco Cat would be a great combination, if taco cat didn't eat this taco that is.
Re: Grateful Ed's Fish Tacos
awesome character and style, the colors are sweet too!
Re: Grateful Ed's Fish Tacos
Really cool design...Love the hand-drawn lettering. If this stagnates in terms of voting, maybe try flexing the lettering a bit?
Here's a quick rough of what I mean (done with the smudge tool - obviously you'd do it better):
The lettering just looks a bit too "straight across" for a psych shirt to me...like how the Grateful Dead used to have the lettering work almost as a frame for the central image...

Oh man, I'd love that recipe if you wouldn't mind. I used to live in Claremont. It's 30 or so miles inland of the city, but I enjoyed weekend trips there.

I grew up in Gardena, but the last place I lived was Covina, we went to claremont all the time. There was a real cool indy record store, that would stock some really good underground rap stuff.
I'll post the recipe on my blog tonight or tomorrow and post the link here.

You're right about the lettering. I would probably have done it differently if I had more time. I struggled enough doing straight letters, doing something arched like that takes some real work to get right (for me at least). I think this is about as done as this one is going to get. To be honest, I'm a bit burnt out on the hard work and disappointment of the derbies. This is likely my last one for a while.

I plan to keep designing and trying my hand at some of the other t-shirt sites. I just want a to be able to spend more time on my designs and have a little more fun with it.

You know, I feel exactly what you're talking about when it comes to the derbies. It's been talked about quite a bit by various artists here, and it's well known by now. Certain "styles" or themes tend to win easily. Certain artists pander to those voters in hopes of making quick money. Others (you and I included) tend to design what we ourselves would like or wear, and then get our hopes up because other like-minded artists love our designs. The sad truth though is that when they're revealed to the voting public as a whole, they tend to fall flat while video game fan-art and cutesy designs top the charts. This derby is a rare exception to that rule though. I actually see (for the most part) some decent work getting votes.
Anyway, I completely understand taking time off from it. I think I tell myself that every week. Somehow I keep coming back into it though. I hope you come back into it eventually and wish you luck at the other sites. PM me with some so I can check out your work and buy some of it. You've been a valuable resource and mentor on this site since I first started designing here, and you deserve props & respect for that.
Peace.

The derbies are crazy because I've seen great art win and bad art win. You just never know what's going to happen. I know in my mind that I'm designing for myself, but the reality is that this is a contest and it's hard not to get sucked in by that aspect of it. I think that's really what I'm getting burned out on. I started working on that second design that I posted in the other thread and just didn't have the heart to rush to a finish. I'll probably finish it this week sometime and really work on trying to make it something that I love.
I've been starting to get a good amount of votes in the first couple of hours, which I assume is from people who are hanging around the pre-derby and that's cool. But, something about my style or ideas or whatever has zero appeal for most of the voting base here. I can accept that, but at the same time it makes me wonder why I'm trying to stick a square peg into a round hole. Again, I'm not really interested in changing to please people, I'll keep doing what I do till I find somebody who likes it.

Don't leave us, Odysseyroc! We need your talent and unique art style here. You're so helpful to everyone on this site. It would be a sad day if you did not come around anymore. If you do decide to post your work somewhere else, let us know because I would love to support it.

Let me know if any of that recipe doesn't make sense. I typed the thing out at like 1am or so and haven't really looked it over again, so I may have asked that you fry your own hand or something.

I for one would like to know where I can go to find out where you are posting new work in the future. I have only been coming to woot for a few months now but I became an instant fan of your work and every derby I am hopeful your work will print. I am still hoping you print the Alice in Wonderland/Wizard of Oz crossing paths from the literature derby somewhere so I can buy it. I will be sad to see you go from the derbies but you must stay true to your art and your passions. Please let us know where we can seek out your t-shirts in the future so that I might be able to support you with more than just my vote each week.

We made the fish tacos for dinner tonight. Well, actually my husband made them because I cook about as well as I design shirts :P They were delicious and the recipe was perfect! The only thing we added was poblano peppers to the avacado pico de gallo just to spice it up. Thanks so much for sharing. We will definitely add this recipe to our collection of favorites!

Awesome! I used to make the pico with serranos, but my wife doesn't like spicy food all that much. So now I make a pretty spicy habanero and Arbol salsa to top everything off. I'm glad you enjoyed the recipe, I think I like cooking more than I like drawing, and I love sharing. I also have a pretty good carnitas recipe on my blog, I'll probably be putting more up soon.
I'd hate to see you leave as well man. Your a wonderful artist, and your attitude towards the site and the weekly contest is one many here should aspire to.
It's true that you just don't know what to expect when you put work up here, even for those that try to do stuff that are like shirts that typically win. It's always a gamble.
I've been using the weekly contest as a way to keep me drawing and motivated with artwork, so even if it goes nowhere, I gave it a shot, and was artistically active for the week. Otherwise, I would just play video games.
Again, I would hate to not be able to see your artwork each week, but as long as you keep at it somewhere else, it's good. Just know man, you will be missed around here.

Thanks Drak. I think the big thing for me right now is that between work and this, I feel like I've been doing nothing but grinding. I think I need to step away from that "deadline" side of things here to work on refining what I do. Before doing the derbies, I hadn't seriously drawn anything in about a decade, so this has been great for me in that regard. It was just starting to turn into work part 2, instead of a release. Like I said earlier, if a topic really grabs me, I'll probably do a design, as long as I can have some fun.
I do plan on staying active in the community here. I really like this site and have met some cool people here. I'd hate to just leave and not keep up with what's going on. I'm hoping to sort of recharge and come back strong in a month or two or however long it takes for me to think it's fun again.

The spicier the better, I say. Looking forward to more recipes, art, and sharing! ![]()
Re: Grateful Ed's Fish Tacos
I hate fish tacos. Granted, I've only ever eaten one (and I was preggers and absolutely nothing was agreeing with me) while I lived in San Diego- but it's a pretty strong dislike.
However, yet again I find myself in desperate need of one of your shirts. I have no idea how you do it, but pretty much every derby you put out a design that I can't help but love. They tend to be quirky, have wonderful colours and marvelously interesting characters.
After woot misstepped terribly and didn't print your last Taco shirt, I've been avoiding the derby. My superstitious side is absolutely positive that I'm somehow giving your designs the kiss of death.
I'm only posting here now to ask you to PLEASE let me know if you take ANY of your designs elsewhere.
Love the shirt, as usual. You not getting printed wouldn't bother me nearly as much if you were awful. Or even just not wonderful.

I'd like to get Take a Taco for a Walko printed somewhere. The 2 questions I have, are am I free to take it elsewhere now that the double take is over, or is the hold extended once you enter it there? Also, where would be a good place to try to get it printed? I'm not too familiar with all of the other shirt sites and where it would have the best chance.

I REAAAAAAAAAAAAALLY hope this shirt gets an honorable mention! I'd love another chance to get it!

I want you to get all your shirts printed somewhere. I have never submitted a print and do not know the rules of all the sites, I only know the t-shirt sites I surf when looking to buy. I can give a list of those if you wanted somewhere to start, but I am sure one of the veterans of the site can provide a much more detailed offer of assistance.
