Re: DEVOlving DNA
I figured nothing signifies de-evolution more than DNA unraveling... Was going to put the design on the side, but the more I looked at it, the more it seemed destined to be a faux tie.

Re: DEVOlving DNA
Would 'denaturing' be the word you were going for?
Interesting idea all the same, but the chemist in me rose up in rebellion.

No, simply unzipping the sense from the antisense strands isn't technically denaturing since transcription doesn't denature (and therefore ruin) the strand. Of course, having DEVO on the backbone isn't natural, so that's why I went with "devolving".

and +1 for the lecture

It's nice to see science folks on the derby threads! Thanks for the comments!
Re: DEVOlving DNA
Great concept, I think it would actually be stronger without the energy dome.
Re: DEVOlving DNA
This is a really awesome concept! I agree about removing the energy dome and would also prefer to see it running down the side. It kind of has a "neck-tie" effect to it in the center. Still, I love the concept and clean execution.
Re: DEVOlving DNA
This is an amazing shirt! I hope it gets printed, it's just so awesome.
I'd buy it too.

I love me some knowledge!
Re: DEVOlving DNA
Ok, been staring at this too long. I think I like it, though it's not something I could wear. I do think the dome has to stay - give the 'tie' its point. A goofy part of me, though, would like to see the strand rendered in every color BUT the red. The, since all those spheres have the same shade-blob that looks somewhat like a smile, have just one sphere in red, and add round 'smiley' eyes.
Just my weird take on it.
And props to those of you who understood the discussion above. Somehow, 'denaturing' sounds worse than 'devolving'!!!
Re: DEVOlving DNA
I think it would have been amusing to have the D E V O integrated into the design as base pairs XD or maybe hopping in and making something like a thymine dimer...sorry, rambling. cute design!
This design is awesome. Perhaps my favorite of all that I've seen so far.
Re: DEVOlving DNA
Very clever! It's simple and clean and works great on the shirt.
Re: DEVOlving DNA
I hate to be the one to say this, but nobody finds this phallic?
monslafayette wrote:I hate to be the one to say this, but nobody finds this phallic?
Only if you find ties phallic, I guess... maybe because it's father's day today and I am the father of two boys that I thought that a tie-like shirt would be great.
Thanks for the great comments, folks, I truly appreciate them! Even the helpful suggestions are fun to read.
monslafayette wrote:I hate to be the one to say this, but nobody finds this phallic?
i will admit my very first thought was that it was phallic (i think because of the hat at the bottom), but then i saw it as a tie. I think this is a great idea. I wish though that you used the hat as the tie's knot instead of at the bottom of the tie. i think this might help those of us who jump to the gutter quickly =) but also i think you would see the hat more and make the design overall more tie like. great job though, me likey!
Re: DEVOlving DNA
Really cool, simple design - and I definitely mean that as a compliment. GMV!
monslafayette wrote:I hate to be the one to say this, but nobody finds this phallic?
Yes--thank you for being the one to say it. This is very phallic and it's not because every tie looks phallic. Ties don't usually extenuate their "tip"

Looks more like a Tool shirt to me!

I don't usually chime in around these parts, but my resistance is gone.
As for ties being phallic, I was told a tie was simply a guide for those who need a little help finding their way, they could just follow the arrow.
That is all. Thank you. Nicely done Professor Skek.

I love this!!!

Thanks KtC! Funny story. Interesting thing about being a professor is I don't have to wear ties anymore. As my students could attest, I've been known to wear a Woot shirt to class.
And to everyone voting for this design, I truly am grateful!
Re: DEVOlving DNA
Since this is DNA, that cap on the end wouldn't be a 5' cap would it? Also, I do like that its roughly 10 BP's per turn. I am counting 9 but i say its good. I wish I could be in your neurobio class haha.
The chirality ain't quite right.
Re: DEVOlving DNA
And I mean that in the most loving way. Fix it and I'll totally buy it.
You have my vote!

What's wrong? How would I fix it? After all, what I used as my model was a snap-bead kit I use in my Gen Biology teaching...
