If Shakespeare were alive today...

This is six colors on a cream shirt. Here's a detail:

The text is mainly there for decorative purposes but it does tie into the design, it's "All that glisters is not gold" repeating over and over. Man, he really hates Cliffs Notes.

You can view a BIG version here. Thanks so much for looking. Please vote if you like this design! ^__^

Awesome! My son was looking over my shoulder and wanted to know what Cliffs Notes are. I told him he doesn't need to know. Read the book, kid!

Love it. I need a good shirt (or two or three) to wear to watch Shakespeare's Skum (http://comedyindc.com/skum.htm) this year... hoping this might be one of them ^_^

Agreed Shakespeare, agreed. I can proudly say I've never read one of those things. If you're going to go to the trouble of reading anything, why not make it the real thing?

I didn't catch it at first, but Billy looks a whole lot like the HS English teacher who taught be to appreciate Shakespeare. And he was a pretty tightly-wound, testy kinda guy. NOW I get why. Lol!
And no, I never used Cliff's Notes. Sadly, more because I never heard of them than from moral fortitude.

Shakespeare wrote PLAYS, not books! It's all well and good to tout having a real and thorough Shakespeare experience, but you won't get that reading the script.

This has got to be the funniest and my favorite submission in this derby thus far. I can completely understand Shakespeare's reasoning. Alas, I have fallen to reading SparkNotes but not until after reading his actual plays. (Just for some clarity)

After several disappointing dailies, and derbies about topics I didn't really care about (DEVO? Really, guys?), this is the first shirt in a long while that I would actually buy. I hope this one wins, so I can do so! Excellent, excellent job.

Re: Read The Whole Book!

Great shirt, really, but Cliff's Notes is great when used properly. My brother has issues with reading comprehension, so when he was asked to read Hamlet, we picked up the notes for him so that he could better understand it while still reading the actual play. So let's stop attacking those who use them.

Re: Read The Whole Book!

It's all in good fun, jboshaw.

@tjost, thanks so much! I tend to be a bit chamaeleonic and change styles to suit whatever idea I have, but this has a little more of me in it than usual so it's great to see people liking it.

@nathanwpyle, hey thanks! Your shirt sold out today faster than anything I've seen here. Ever!

@chrisfranz, heh - I decided to go all out with the expression. I had a more restrained face in there at first, but the angrier I drew him, the funnier it looked. ^_^

@nyyankeeez, my English teacher would have approved too. :^)

@nerdtasticalone, aw gee. Thanks!

@llklocke, well I'll have my fingers crossed this week, but the fog is like an all-star Woot battle this week and I'm still a noob by comparison!

Thanks everyone!

'Tis true, the best experience comes from watching the plays, because everything makes MUCH more sense! I watched Macbeth performed by a 3rd grade class once, and because they performed it, they really sounded like they understood what their lines were about and what they meant! I was quite impressed, and it helped me understand Macbeth better actually (I had read the script in the past)

But if you don't have a choice about watching a play, reading the script is a much better, fuller, more interesting experience than reading the Cliff's notes. Not that there isn't a place for cliff's notes, I just think it's as an aid to help understanding WHILE reading the actual book/play/text!

Re: Read The Whole Book!

Ok, I *thought* I had commented on this design, but apparently it was just in my head @_@

I didn't really use cliff notes in high school but everyone around me always had them ... I borrowed someone's once because I wasn't that into a book (it wasn't shakespeare, some war-related book)... I regretted it, because I didn't do so well in that test! I think the teachers particularly hated cliffnotes, so I have a feeling they might have purposely picked quiz questions not found in them;)

Very amusing idea and well done Spiritgreen!!

Vote!

I hate to be THAT guy, but CliffsNotes and the yellow/black design is copyrighted.....

http://www.cliffsnotes.com/cliffsnotes-terms-of-use.html

Scroll down to proprietary rights for details.

I'm actually very surprised this hasn't been rejected yet.... :/

This is all, of course, assuming you didn't acquire express written permission to use the logo and the name.

Aye but there's the rub. While CliffsNotes is copyrighted, nether Cliff (no S, he clearly wanted to imply an S but there is no actual S) nor Notes is as singular words. He's also used both a different font and colorscheme (monotoned aka black in this instance) then what CliffsNotes uses (either a white yellow or black yellow combo).

Sorry to say too that diagonal lines of black and yellow are also not copyrighted and are seen as international caution symbols and often used in sinage for construction zones or wet floors. They can use them on their books all they like as a visual stlye but they can't stop other books from having them. The only way they'd be able to stop someone on the lines part is if the other party were publishing a similar type of book as what they do and using the same type of cover design, then it can be seen as trying to mislead or misrepresent to the consumer, using a known visual style associated with a known brand.

There's also the issue of parody, and while there's always a way you can argue for or against reasonable use, I think this falls squarley in the field of parody as a man that's been dead for nigh 400 years is ripping a book apart that's being published today. BTW spiritgreen I really hope you finally get a print with this one

Re: Read The Whole Book!

Thanks for the defence tjost and lucky1988!

It did cross my mind that this might be an issue, so I made a generic looking cover and of course, it's a parody image (and a satirical view of using literary shortcuts). I'm sure it's fine.

Re: Read The Whole Book!

If this shirt doesn't print tonight, you will have been robbed.

The other designs aren't "bad" really... just poorly researched and both reference things incorrectly. I think that fact checking and research are an important part of design. While your design may not need as much background work, they choose each topic themselves and also choose to be lazy and not get the specifics correct.

Regardless, thank you for a great design. Will you try to have it printed in another forum? I am unfamiliar with the rules of this. I think this would make an awesome MUG as well as a shirt.

Thanks and thanks and ever thanks for your great work.
