Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
Like that fancy museum tag says, this is 3 colors on baby blue. I really like the way this design fits on the shirt- I hope you do, too. And that you vote for it.

Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
I like it, but for one thing, if I were a woman, I wouldn't be too fond of where the hand is. Also, it's not so much a reinterpretation of Hokusai's classic as it is, well, the equivalent of a photoshopping of it. For most derbies, I would latch onto and love this one, but somehow it almost seems like cheating for this one.
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
I seriously love this Robbie, you nailed the style and I'd totally wear it.
Very cool comp too! ^__^

I'm glad you sort of like the design! Believe me, this wasn't a Photoshop quickie. If you compare this design to the original, you'll see the vast majority of it is new, original linework- only the mountain and one wave (not the great one!) were copied (not pasted, but hand copied in the traditional sense) from the original. It was actually difficult to organically end the image and to use only 3 colors for the whole thing, etc.
Also, I really don't think the hand placement is an issue- do you think it would look like it was copping a feel or something?
I hope I don't sound too defensive here, but I'm proud of the way this design turned out and I'd hate for you to think this was a Photochop job!
I personally love this. The Wave is one of my favorites and I think this is a great representation of it. Also, speaking as a woman, I don't think I have a problem with the placement. Of course I won't really know until it prints and I put it on.

This is so awesome. The hand should not be a problem at all. I'm a lady, and I don't forsee it being an issue.
SO glad you didnt sub this for kawaii. The face was hilarious, imo... but this is much better, much more artsy. Beautiful job. I have this poster in my room =) I'd love to have the shirt!

Oh, no! I didn't mean to imply that you did. It's clear that you started from scratch and meticulously tried to mimic the original. I absolutely love the concept, and that you have the wave and people greeting each other with "konnichiwa." The drawing is extremely well done, and it's a well balanced composition. It's just that, from the perspective of an art historian who interprets this derby as trying to get people to view works or titles in new, unique ways...it's a little TOO meticulous. TOO close to the original. I don't think it's off topic, I just don't think it was quite what they had in mind. (That said, I know you had this design already made, I remember you posting a modified version in the Kawaii thread, so I don't blame you for bringing it out for this one!)
As far as hand placement, that was just my impression as a man, the women may not agree (and so far haven't!)
I wasn't trying to denigrate your work, it's very good.
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
I am a sucker for most things 'Great Wave' like... you did an awesome job with it.
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
I am SO thrilled you didn't end up wasting this in the Kawaii derby, and that a more appropriate opportunity for you to showcase it at Woot came along so quickly. GMV, and pulling for a print.
(It will be my second Robbie Lee shirt in the space of about a week if it wins - I couldn't say no to "Green Means Go")

Thanks for taking the time to write such a thoughtful and diplomatic reply. I'm glad you like the design overall.
I hope you find some interesting stuff this derby- for an art historian, this week's theme may end up to be very gratifying, frustrating, or (most likely) both.
I love this, Robbie! Awesome as usual.
Also, I just got my "Twenty If by Giant Robot" in the mail...it printed beautifully!

Haha, yes, a fair bit of both. I just wish I had more time to work on stuff and start submitting designs!
Good luck this week!
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
Great design, great presentation.. gmv!
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
Robbie, incredible work! you are an inspiration! +1
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
LOVE
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
this has deserved to print for eons.
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
This is such a winner because of several reasons:
•The originial artwork is immediately recognizable and very popular.
•The re-interpretation is technically solid.
•It's so funny!
Go, Big Wave, go!
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
Great work. You really captured the style, and while the original makes me feel small and scared, this one gives me a laugh.
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
you nailed the style and it looks absolutely fantastic on the tee.
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
I'll buy one!
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
Love it. And maybe it's just me, but I see "hi 5" in the Japanese text, which adds to the awesomeness.
cosmiccow wrote:I like it, but for one thing, if I were a woman, I wouldn't be too fond of where the hand is.
oh nos, there's a hand on mah breastses.
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
cool
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
A must-win, for me. Loved this when you first showed it off, and I too am glad you didn't sub it for Kawaii. Hokusai's GReat Wave is probably the most recognizable piece of Japanese art there is, and you've done a masterful job of capturing the style. Kudos!
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
This looks great! I second everybody who said they saw it in the Kawaii thread and was glad you saved it for this perfect theme. gmv.

Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
i like this a lot but i could have done without the giant hand.
from the thumbnail i thought this was going to be of the people waving at the boat as it rides the wave, and i thought even that subtle touch would have been awesome. i feel like the giant hand is a little over the top.
that said, its still a sweet design.
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
AWESOME! must have
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
Great Job! Are they saying "High-5"?
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
Very, very clever. The "welcome" definitely does it for me!
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
It annoys me that it's not written in kanji (今日は), but it's a pretty cute shirt.
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
Perfect fit for this derby, Robbie. Love it!
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
Really sad to see this out of the fog. The details and craftsmanship is so spot on..just incredibly wonderful work, Robbie. I hope it will earn an HM, and an EC!
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
WAAAAA! Get back in the fog!
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
i saw this one on your website a while back. im glad you used it here. and i need a good blue shirt, too, so gets my vote. nice work.
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
<-----*waves back*
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
Back in the fog where it belongs. I really want one of these.
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
I didn't get it until I figured out the ocean hand was waving. I just figured the ocean hand was going to high-five (read as collide) with the people lol...
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
i love this and its gonna break my heart if it doesnt get made and i dont get one. everyone vote plz
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
Better hope that giant hand is benevolent or else it's about to lay some serious smack down on those poor innocent bystanders.
Great work!
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
awesome! and nice presentation.
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
Super Awesome!!! GMV!
Re: Inspired by The Great Wave
This is really good--really! ^_^
But on a side note, I'm confused about the rejectionator's pick-and-choose style this week. I want to say this is reinterpreting the artwork and not the artwork title and there are one or two other designs in the derby that suffer this same issue who are also not rejected. *sigh* I don't get it. Is it too hard to ask for consistency in rejections?

For the umpteenth time, this does reinterpret the title as well. Unless you think THE REAL OCEAN HAS HANDS.

No, and this one deserves to stay in, but http://shirt.woot.com/Derby/Entry.aspx?id=44372 this entry, for example, is the original work of art, with guns, in green pixelated art. I don't have anything against the piece or the artist, but Draug is right in saying there is a lot of inconsistency if Vitruvian man there is allowed in and others are not.

I completely concur. the vitruvian man is a total sham to keep in. but this isn't the vitruvian man thread, and IS another thread people have complained about seemingly without understanding the theme.
Woot is always inconsistent. It sucks. But in this case, they have omitted pieces that should be rejected, not rejected pieces that should have stayed.
