"The Umbrellas" by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
My alternate title would be "Acid Rain". Of course the one time I actually have a decent title for my entry I can't use it! Damn you, Woot gods!
I hope you guys like this one. I think it's the longest I've ever spent on a derby entry.

Re: The Umbrellas
Ah... I started an umbrellas design too, but I don't think I'm going to get to finish it. Looks awesome cmdixon! Love the colors dripping down the umbrellas and the whole flow of the shirt.
Side note: I do wish it was on another color though, because then I'd buy it! Just a bit asphalted/blacked out these days (especially these hot summer days where I'm not wearing dark colors) and I think the design could work really well on a number of other colors.
Still fantastic though!;)

I like the asphalt, it lends to the overcast/dreary skies of rain, and it's a great contrast to the shock of colors flowing from the umbrellas. Nicely done!
btw, it's raining right now where I am, so I'm really feeling this one

Thanks everyone for the great response so far. I was starting to think I'd never get this one done, so I'm glad it's being enjoyed. Makes it worth it.
I actually started this design on light blue, then switched to heather grey, and then somehow ended up on asphalt at the last second. I tried not to use it, but the colors just worked so well against it and it made the whole design cleaner looking. Sorry to those adverse to that color, but I had to go with what fit the design the best. If Woot offered silver as a color choice that's what I would have picked.
Thanks again for the support and the votes everyone! ![]()

Haha I think it was just me who prefers non-asphalt;) Baby blue and heather grey were the exact colors I was imagining in order to keep the rain feel (though it would work with other colors too). I totally understand the choice of asphalt, and it still looks gorgeous ... I don't feel like wearing or buying dark colors in the heat that's going on my neck of the woods, but I still might be tempted to get it, as it is really fantastic

I think I'd like it on white the best. I'm in for one if it prints - it's been a long time since I purchased a new shirt for myself.

You've done it again, Chris. GMV and will buy it the second it pops. Hopefully the community doesn't let another great design of yours slip away into obscurity.
And BTW, I think the main reason I like it so much is how well all the colors and the concept of a rainstorm mesh with the asphalt. I think you made the right choice.

Re: The Umbrellas
This shirt is beautiful. I love the little dog- is he yellow, turning white by the rain? Or is he white, but got splashed by the yellow puddle he walked through?
I like the color choice. I second whoever said white would be nice, but then the umbrellas and rain wouldn't stand out. I'm also loving the blue, yellow, orange combo for the umbrellas. I really like those three together.
I hope the results of this derby don't disappoint, like others.

As a non-artist, I'm curious to hear how you design your shirts. They are always so clean. Start on a pad of paper and then work your way up?

I LOVE this. Something about it is so striking. And it's a great interpretation of the original.
Also, thank you for choosing to interpret one of the classics. Nothing against the more modern selections, I just think the traditionals get less love sometimes. ![]()

I love this, but I really don't like asphalt. I do see how this works on it, but as a personal preference, I just don't like the color and it doesn't seem to hold up as well as some of the other colors.
But your work is stellar on this piece. GMV

Amazeringzzz. I like that it covers the whole shirt, +1 :^) You fogged super fastly, I guess I gotta work on my coloring skills haha. Your halftones are subtle and amazering too ^^ (I think I made up that word just for this design..)

Questions like this sort of throw me because I never really know how to answer them. I never seem to approach a design the same way, so I don't have a real pattern for how I work. I'll give it a shot.
Sometimes I do sketch on paper. Sometimes I just wing it in Photoshop. It just depends on the concept and what I have in my head. This design started off with a slightly different concept than what I ended up with. I decided to work straight in Photoshop without using a sketch and just see what happened. This design evolved on it's own as I worked on it. That happens to me a lot.
Basically I treat every design differently and they all come about in different ways so I can't really describe a process I use because it's always changing. Some weeks the designs come about easily and some weeks I struggle to get it right. I imagine it's that way with a lot of designers.
Sorry if that's not very clear. Glad you enjoy my work though!
And thanks again everyone for all the comments!

Wow, that's very Artistish reply :P
just kidding, All your designs are so clean, professional and crisp, They don't seem like you wing it and happen upon them, So i think it's your crazy skill rather than the process.

This really is my favorite one. The biggest problem i see in it is the strides on the yellow foot print of the man, they look normal, except the first one, the starting point seems off when you match the strides with the rest.
otherwise, i think i might actually fork up the $10 to buy it.

Oh, and i forgot to mention the final footprint, i think it would have been cool to see it start to merge with the orange paitn instead of just lay on top of it. if you added those two details, this would be very artistic, otherwise it's just another rendering.
