I didn't think I'd like anything from this derby, but this is the coolest thing I've seen in any derby in a long time. <3

I really like the design, but I'm not sure I can give it a vote - it really feels like it's just a cool design that's tangentially related so it got submitted.

Re: butterfly effect

If this shirt prints, I will get one to contribute to the Houston Holocaust Museum's Butterfly Project

From the Museum's page:
"The butterfly - with its story of rebirth and transformation into new life - has become a symbol of freedom from oppression, intolerance and hatred ever since Pavel Friedman, a young boy held captive in the Terezin concentration camp in Czechoslovakia, wrote his poem “I Never Saw Another Butterfly.”

A total of 15,000 children under the age of 15 passed through the Terezin camp from 1942 to 1944. Approximately 90 percent of these children perished. To remember all of the 1.5 million children who died in the Holocaust, Holocaust Museum Houston is collecting 1.5 million butterflies prepared from arts and crafts materials for a breath-taking exhibition in 2013 that all will remember.

For more information on how you can help complete The Butterfly Project, visit www.hmh.org.

Re: butterfly effect

the butterfly effect is dependent on the chaos theory, which doesn't have much to do with physics. actually it has nothing to do with physics.

eep, cool design but i can't vote for it in this derby.

Couldn't agree more. I'm not sure how the title of it relates either; I'm not sure "the butterfly effect" means what the artist thinks it means. Cool design, but I don't see it as on-topic with this derby.

It's only the title. The voting is on the design, not the title.

sorry, sorry. let me rephrase. neither the title nor the design has much to do with physics. actually, neither of them have anything to do with physics.

Yeah, I feel the same way. It looks nice, but physics, chaos theory and circuit boards are all very, very different things. Wait for a digital nature derby and resub.

Um, chaos theory is definitely a part of physics...physics is about matter/forces/interactions and chaos theory is about sensitivity to initial conditions when modeling forces/interactions (way more than just weather). And circuit boards/electronics are also a huge part of physics...Ohm's Law is one of the first things taught in physics.

I agree that the design doesn't have much to do with chaos theory other than being in the shape of a butterfly (in general circuit boards aren't very chaotic, if they were computers would tell us that 2+2 is whatever random number that happened to come through), but it definitely relates to physics. And it's certainly not the first time a title was a reference rather than a description of the design.

In short, absolutely on topic, as well as beautiful.

I disagree. All of your connections are tenacious at best. On those grounds, you can technically relate anything at all to physics. Anything can be applied using physics (or chemistry, etc), it doesn't mean its inherently related to physics.

Even so, chaos theory probably was the best shot at connecting this to physics, but like you said, its only the title. The design itself a bad long shot. Circuit boards and physics? Like making a chemistry derby and submitting a shirt design with a piece of wood on it. Yes, chemistry is involved in the composition of wood. So yes, physical properties and laws must be obeyed when making a circuit board...as with everything in the world.

Physics is an integral part of engineering. Which is why failing my physics class screwed my computer engineering degree dreams forever.

Except chaos theory was a major part of at least one of my physics classes in college and another physics class was entirely devoted to electronics, including building a basic computer. Both are integral parts of a standard physics curriculum/degree.

You can argue that everything is part of physics. If I made a t-shirt of a guy taking a dump in the toilet, I could say, "Oh there's physics going on there. See, there is biology, gravity, fluid dynamics (*flush*)

qft - which is quoted for truth (a quick way of agreeing with someone or bringing a point they mentioned to the forefront)

No, electronics courses are not standard parts of a physics degree. Building a basic computer is called computer engineering. And since I used to be a computer engineer major, I can promise that physics was not one of my required courses.

Like I said, you can apply anything to physics. I'll give you that you can relate chaos theory to physics, just as you can relate it to the weather or geology or chemistry. Chaos theory, however, is not a physics concept. Gravity is a physics concept, the laws of motion are physics concepts.

That's all beside the point, however, since

Ok, fine, I can't make a blanket statement that all physics degrees
require a course in electronics, but mine did. It was required, listed as physics, taught in the physics dept by physics professors. It was more about the theory and how to use the equations, but it was all about electronics. Even in high school physics, we played with making little circuits.
