Similar shirt exists, and is currently being sold on this very site.

I see what you're saying, sort of. It's a physics derby, and I used a symbol that says "Physics". It happens to be an atom, but I can't imagine atoms are now off limits because there is already a shirt with a stylistically different atom on it.

I was just trying to make a retro style shirt with a physics symbol.

I'm not saying you copied it; it's just poor timing. But yours has a cute, mongoose smile and the other shirt does as well. And two atom shirts with cute, mongoose smiles is two too many.

I went back and forth on whether to to leave the smile or not. I ended up concluding that it added to the retro look.

Thanks for the feedback though, I appreciate it!

I don't think it should matter. I mean, there are turtle, bunny, penguin, kitty, and stuff like that in the reckoning all the time :/

His shirt is retro and unique, and I feel its conveying a different message than the atom shirt in the reckoning.

With the one in the reckoning I feel a OOOO~ CUTE KAWAAIII feel.

With this I feel, HECK YES! RETRO ATOMS.

I see the SIMILARITY, but I don't think they're SIMILAR enough for this to get rejected.

My opinion anyway.

Would you kindly...

Yeah. I think that to say this is a ripoff of Ramy's theft of deviant art printed in shirt form (http://shirt.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=4053486) is unfair. It's a significantly different design. Designers on woot throw smiles on everything.

Before you start putting words in other people's mouths, you should probably read. I made it clear that I was not accusing the designer of ripping anyone off at all. I just think that this is poorly timed and that it is too similar to a shirt that is also currently being sold. Read this before you respond this time.

No reason to be snarky about it. i just said it was unfair to say they were all that similar. They're fundamentally different designs.

I like your color choice a lot - I think it pops well and really has the retro feel you were going for. And congratulations on not going the "distressed" route so many choose when doing retro - in some cases it works, I guess, but I infinitely prefer this shirt without.

Gotta say, I'd much prefer it without the face. As it is, I can't quite vote for it--and that's got nothing to do with any other shirt.

I almost subbed it with distressing, but after I looked at it, it was just overkill. I'm glad you like it!

Except no one said that. It is similar though, which is what they were saying - and it's hard to deny that two smiling atoms are not similar to each other, at least similar enough that woot might think twice.

Do like the design, best of luck.

I like the general design but am not wild about it on cranberry. Also, just my opinion, but I would like it better with a plain nucleus, rather than a cutesy smiley one.

I like the smile, i like the cranberry, and it's different enough that I would wear this shirt and not the other one. Great design.

I refuse to answer on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Re: Retro Physics

I love it. And I do think the cutesy face goes w/ this shirt's retro theme, but I'm also not above wearing cutesy faces, especially if it has to do with physics!

Re: Retro Physics

I like it. As for similarity, I think if woot rejected this then any atom with a face (and no other setting) would warrant a d/q. That constrains the derby theme a tad too much, so I suspect woot will leave well enough alone.

But I do find it funny how cranberry always amounts to retro.

(i also enjoyed the nerd-rage semantic/snarky argument, i'm just sad to see nerd-rage has turned to cannibalism)

The retro look is nice but not enough to be in the fog...

ichimunki

quality posts: 1 Private Messages ichimunki

I love the shirt, except for the smiley face. And the fact that I already have the other atom shirt from a two weeks ago. Obviously being in the fog you might not want to change your design, but I could see myself going for this if the atom (or possibly atoms) was not centered and no attempt at cute was made.

I realize this has been thoroughly discussed, but losing the smiley face would solve most of your issues. It distorts the retro vibe for me, and, without it, you'd quell comparisons to that other shirt. On a technical note, horizontal stripes across the chest are a tough sell because sleeves kill the continuity. Unless it's sleeveless.

That said, it's good to test the waters at first. I'm on my third submission and still have a few specifics to work out...

P.S. With your layout up there, make your illustration and title the focus rather than the t-shirt. Considering the venue, the t-shirt is mostly to show placement, so it can be downplayed to give precedent to your work...

I see what you're saying about the layout, but given that it's a fairly simple design, I don't think it matters quite as much.

Thanks for the tips though!

Re: Retro Physics

I don't think the two atom shirts are similar at all, the other one is showing the different elements of the atoms with the positive protons having happy faces, the negative electrons having sad faces and the neutral neutrons having no real expression... where this one is just a retro happy atom.

You can argue either way...but this shirt is far more similar to the one that exists in look and feel than any Schrodinger's Cat entry which got rejected this Derby is to the one that printed in June. It's a consistency thing.

I see what your saying, but Shrodinger's cat is a specific cat. An atom is a general thing. If mine got rejected because of the other atom shirt, it would be like rejecting "Physics of a falling cat" because there has already been a cat shirt printed. That's just my opinion, but I think it holds water.

Re: Retro Physics

No!!! When did this happen?! While I really like the design of a couple other shirts and hope to see them print (namely the octopus one), this was the only one I was planning on buying.

I know that some might consider it "not art," but I really liked how this kinda poked fun at all those Old Navy shirts in a wonderfully geeky way.
