Cave Painting
All you need is a surface, some blood, and your fingers!

There was some talk about this in the pre-thread. If this entry TRULY upset, offends, or discomforts you greatly, then please leave a comment and let me know. If too many are uneasy by this, I will delete it within my 24 hour time frame. And please don't lie about it, taking advantage of my consideration for others feelings.

Re: Finger Painting

I think it's fine. Not something I would personally wear, but I have babies who see my shirts every day. ;) I don't think it's gory enough to be actually offensive, and it's clever too.

I refuse to answer on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

This is disgusting. I love it! +1

I don't find it offensive. I think it's clever. But I would understand if others found it creepy... I admire the fact that you offered to take it down if it really, truly offends someone. If I could give you a +1 for character, I would do that too

It's making me a bit squeamish. But, really good looking art.

Right. Excellent illustration, and love the texture on the cave wall. But like others, just not something I'd wear.

I'm not sure I 'get it'. I am quite sure blood would make a great pigment, but - fingers???
That said, it's so well-rendered, I can't hate. In fact, I gotta vote for it!

Precisely this. I'm mildly squicked, but not at all offended, because the pun is great. I say leave it up.

To be honest, what made me squeamish was the fact that it was his own fingers. Someone else's and I would've laughed and probably voted. Sorry, doesn't deserve tattling though.

Re: Finger Painting

I'm definitely disturbed, squeamish, and generally uncomfortable with this design... the art is great, so I'm not entirely sure why.

I suppose, upon more thought, it's because of a few things. Not that he is using blood to draw with, but because the blood is coming from ripped off fingers, and his own fingers at that. The art is so nicely drawn, the composition appealing, the colors work well together, that the disturbing part takes me by surprise and I think that is a little bit why it gets to me. You know? There's no "cues" that this will be a scary/bloody/halloween/creepy picture. If that makes sense.

That said, I appreciate your willingness to take down your entry if needed. That is a very considerate thing to offer. Personally, I'd be uncomfortable if it won but don't feel a need for it to be voluntarily taken out of the competition.

(ps - just thought of something about the creepy factor... might not feel so uncomfortable if he was drawing with mammoth/sabertooth blood or some other non-human, non-himself blood. He could be using the blood to illustrate winning the fight with said sabertooth or something)

I think your idea a really good one. A whole story in one image sort of deal. It is extremely clever.

Personally, I don't mind having a "sadistic" side to my art. This idea hit me quite quickly, and I was eager to run with it. I agree, the cuteness and beauty of the piece are deceiving, but that is half the humor in my opinion. I kind of hope it would catch people of guard to some extent, even though I didn't try to hide what is taking place in this scene at all.

It definitely succeeds at catching off guard! To each their own (though I think all yall creepy artists are crazy), but keep it in the derby, it's done surprisingly well already. (Ok, it's surprising to me since it's so creepy)

Re: Finger Painting

I think this shirt comes about as close as any to an interpretation of the derby theme I was hoping an artist/artists might pick up on.

In addition to the popular cave paintings, another form of 'art' for many neolithic cultures was the way in which bodies were prepared. Flower petals, colored pigments, antlers/bones, beads, stones, and even precious metals were often used in many cultures to adorn corpses at the time of burial. Morbid? Perhaps. Fascinating? Absolutely.

(Forgive my momentary geeking out in your thread. As an anthropology minor, I wrote a term paper on Neolithic Scandinavian burials a few years ago at Uni.)

Na, I don't mind a history lesson Knowledge is always worth sharing!

Many say that these burials were evidence that they had spiritual beliefs. This could be true, but I always felt it was just simply done to cover up the smell of rotting meat. You don't want to attract a big huge, hungry beast to your settlement, especially if you are lower in the food chain. Eh, who knows...

I am sad this is rejected. Rendering, conpect and colors... were wonderful. I wonder if the tweak someone mentioned about changing from human fingers to sabertooth paws would be accepted. I guess the blood is blood and too much. I would defenitely by this as is so please let me know if it gets printed elsewhere.

Re: Finger Painting

It's a fine line. Edgar had a figure pulling out his own eyes, and another lopping off limbs. In one, the colors were 'out there'. In the other,, it was more realistic in color, but...
Anyhoo - I would love to see this design again, here or elsewhere. But, with someone else's fingers, heh?

I think this one was really funny and well done, and one of the few I voted for in this generally uninteresting topic. Sorry to see it rejected, especially with that PG-13 malarkey.

Oh man, that would be the AWESOMEST contest ever. Not to advertise on another artists thread, but when you said "grindhouse" I remembered these from the vintage derby awhile back. I literally wept when the zombie one didn't print.

Ooooooo! That would ROCK. I know a few artists who would just kill with a theme like that - Drakxxx being A-number-one. And while this desing would fit it, apparently the potential definitely there.
Not gonna happen, but it's nice to dream (or have nightmares).

How is it that this drawing is unacceptable, but this one is? Why does having fingers cut off get a rejection but having one's heart cut out is OK? Yes, I know the latter is slightly more of a "muted" style, but I found the idea more shocking. (note: I like both designs. I'm just trying to see woot's "logic" in the rejection.)

Who knows. Woot is getting on my bad side too. I will admit this one does walk the line, but the other one that was linked and went to print, crosses the line completely. It was far worst...

I don't know...

really disappointed this is rejected and I don't see why either. A lot of crap has been getting through on the derby...too bad one that actually stands on its own as a strong graphic (and doesn't need a title to explain what it is) gets censored like this.

Rejected because: Not PG-13

What does that even mean? It has to be PG and under or PG-13 and under? If it's the latter, this is definitely PG-13. People get killed in PG-13 movies.

Ummm... wow. I didn't even think about that one. Maybe it's different because it's a bunny (in the shirt you linked to)? But still... if THIS isn't PG-13, then Raddishes CERTAINLY isn't.

Not that I have anything against the other shirt, because I own it and love it. However, I would also like to own and love this shirt! This is a bummer :/

I think rejections like "too violent/pg-13" are probably a bit more subjective than other reasons. So while I totally agree with your argument (though I would personally not have rejected either for violence), I'm more concerned about, for example, how a tardis design got rejected twice, but a calvin and hobbes design didn't, despite C+H's creator having a decidedly clearer stance on his PROPERTY than the good doctor's.

Some inconsistencies are inconsistencies of opinion. Others are inconsistencies of basic fact. I'm not a huge fan of either, but I tend to be more upset at seeing the latter than the former.

I have been rejected before, but usually I have been able to quickly change it and resub it. This one is unchangeable since I am unwilling to alter the concept.

I tried to look through all the legal mumbo jumbo and failed miserably. Does rejection return my rights to this piece, or do I still have to wait out the allotted 60 days?

i was in the exact same predicament, rejected for pg-13, but i wasn't willing to change anything for a resub, instead i just waited the 60 days and resubbed it elsewhere. =) unfortunately thems the breaks. but this is a good illo, it may not be to everyones tastes but that doesn't mean anythings wrong with it. just know for the future woot likes to play it safe sometimes and not others.

Re: Finger Painting

I'm surprised this got rejected for not being PG-13 in America we are much more open about blood and violence. Someone can be shot in the head and it still be a PG-13 movie yet if you see pubes all of a sudden the movie get an R or NC-17 rating. While in Europe it is much the opposite they are much more open about sexuality and more strict on violence and such. Strange world we live in.
