A balloon animal's biggest phobias: Enetophobia (fear of pins and needles) and Coulrophobia (fear of clowns).

While this is funny boots I don't see it as a phobia, which is an irrational fear, not something that is actively trying to kill/pop you. I think this guy has every right to be afraid of them...

I picture it more like the balloon animal is imagining the worst case scenario of his fears brought to life. People have phobias of sharks, or heights. They're not completely irrational since those things can be dangerous, but worrying about unlikely scenarios is what makes it a phobia. This is the balloon animal's irrational worry. Really, have you ever seen angry tiny clowns hunting a balloon animal with pins? Irrational.

True but on that line of argument I've never seen a ballon animal with emotions and fears either.

I have seen crazy schtuff in my 'hood! I think the design is wonderful! stab the concept and execution. +1 for me.
I think there's going to be this ongoing comment from people being to technical when it comes to the definition of phobia and how artist have interpreted them. Again this is your interpretation and works quite well.

Shudders.

Oh, those are some freaky clowns, though, I am not ashamed to admit, I don't like them at all. Thank you Stephen King's, It.

Great design, clever, and it really makes me smile. :D

This made me LOL pretty hard, I can see boots in her room with a mad look in her eye, mumbling and ranting and comforting a balloon animal!

Man, I wish real life had filters like these, it would make those giant textbooks without any pictures so much more interesting. Also, Boots, I stab the design!

edit: stabbing designs is what I do when I like them

Re: The Great Hunt

are those evil clowns just taunting that poor balloon animal? or are they just really bad shots? they should just do it quick and mercifully no slowly leaking his life air out of his balloon body, that would just be wrong.

great concept and illo!

This is the only shirt I have laughed at in the derby. Just one question, what color is the shirt?

(By the way, "Think of the Children" is my favorite shirt!)

Re: The Great Hunt

I love this and much of your other work bootsboots but I do have to point something out as a non-artist; the pin that is mid-air doesn't appear to have been thrown by any of the clowns.

All the clowns have there hands full with other pins. I really wish the middle clown had been captured with the full extension of a javelin thrower having just released the pin. The pin just seems to have appeared in mid-air without anybody having thrown it to me. That's my non-artists nitpick for the day. Despite that, I still love the shirt.

Looking at it, I think you're right. Originally I had pins stuck in the ground around the clowns too, like they were picking them up and throwing them. I took them out to make the design less busy, but didn't think about how it changed the look of the mid-air pin. Well... I don't think it ruins it, but yeah. I can definitely see your point. And thanks for the loving.

Sometimes, it's really easy to utilize the available tricks n' whatnot to make a design complex and express a lot of textural depth.

Sometimes, it gets way over done and the end result lacks a certain visual zest.

In a time where many people rely on the fascination of adding unnecessary depth to designs and muddle it, I really do thank you for your solid development of a simple image.

The simplicity fits the design very well. It sits nicely on the shirt. Good luck in the derby!

Someone needs to help that poor balloon creature, please! In a world where tiny clowns eat the sweet ballooney rubber, I would think the balloon animal could run away...but no. All he can do is stand there...and sweat!

Boots, your so cruel. +1

I almost always prefer simple, and sometimes it's harder to do well. Every element really has to count. Thanks for the compliment!

Stabbity stab stab it, Boots. Especially because all of the light reflections on the hapless inflatable are exclamations-- like every single part of it is crying out in alarm and terror.

I like this, but I'm still trying to reconcile the pin that looks like it's flying in the air but you can't tell who threw it.
