Move over Bozo and Pennywise. There's something else scaring children these days. Gnomes are the new clowns!

"But their beards are pretty rad", you say. Well, that may be, but there's something about those beady eyes and pointy hats that haunt my dreams. Too often do I wake up from a Gnomish nightmare where tinkered weapons are firing those little buggers right at me!

Maybe if I can trap them on a tee they will have to leave me and the children alone? Help us out wooters!

This is surely one of the funniest shirts I've seen on woot... Is it original, though?

Thank you very much!

Yeah it's totally original, and if it's not then it would be a huge coincidence The idea came to me while I was randomly doodling, and I wasn't able to find anything like it online. Thanks again

Woot filters ftw. Tho you may want to space out a w e s o m e so the meaning of this sentence isn't changed in your description.

Sad this one hasn't seen more votes, its a really creative design (and humorously executed) - plus it works well on a shirt.

stab the design, but unlike you I don't fear the gnome, rather appreciate their industrious work qualities, including as ammunition. I#d buy this shirt if it was printed.

Yah they filter out superlatives that internet users overuse, Ogres Mangling Freaky Ghouls time to expand the vocabulary

Clicking reply will show you a comment prefilter and judicious use of the preview button will let you see if it affects the meaning you're trying to convey.
They just changed what words the filters put in instead in the last two weeks. Personally I miss otterific (what used to be used for bloody).

I stab this, it's so cute, I just wish you'd thought of it in the "how things work" derby, it would have fit there even better.

Re: Gnomophobia

yeah, nice design. One problem is that it isn't at all on theme. I don't usually say things about them because of how gray it gets deciding what is and isn't, but here it is obviously the case that you drew the shirt or had the concept ahead of time and then pasted phobia in the title. Sure, people can be scared of anything, but the line has to be drawn somewhere or one could literally submit anything with phobia in the title and have it count. Also, if you did have gnome phobia, why would this particular picture depict it? Its not like this characteristic of gnomes in fables or real life... sorry just don't get it

That's a fair assessment. However Gnomeophobia really does exist (unlike some of the other entries here, some of which are even in the fog..) I can see how my interpretation might not be as obvious as some of the other designs. But if you're afraid of gnomes what could be scarier than having them shot at you? Those hats are pointy!

As a design, it's amusing and printable. But it's not on theme. The title makes sense with the image, and the theme would cover the title, but the image does not make sense with the theme.

I totally respect and appreciate your opinion. Can I offer a suggestion then? Consider this a design on hoplophobia instead. I know this would be more recognizable as the phobia being depicted, but I just wanted to bring some awareness to gnomophobia so I went with that . Perhaps my mistake was giving it an improper title then, but the title is not printed on the shirt right? So no real harm there. I would also like to point out that Col. Jeff Cooper (who coined the term) stated, "the most common manifestation of hoplophobia is the idea that instruments possess a will of their own, apart from that of their user." Is that not what I depicted in the design? And I know it would scare someone with legitimate gnomophobia as well (which no, I do not really have of course or I couldn't have drawn it, but I know someone who does.)

I appreciate you taking the time to comment though, and I hope you can see my point. Thanks again for stopping in!

Re: Gnomophobia

I like the concept, the only thing I noticed is that the style of the gun and the style of the gnomes seem really different. Maybe a little tighter cohesion of elements and styles in the future Other then that great first entry and I look forward to more. Welcome to Woot.

Thanks man! Actually, that's the feeling I was 'shooting' for I mean, guns and cute little gnomes are two very different styles by nature. I was trying to juxtapose the hard mechanical edges of the gun with a more hobbled-together gnomish 'tinkered' look going on inside. There is always room for improvements though! I will definitely take your considerations to heart for next time

Yeah, love the shirt, but definitely think it abuses the theme just like everything else where you can design whatever you want and then say it is X-aphobia

Why does this just feel like pieced together clipart? Sure the idea is funny, but the gnomes and the gun don't seem to fit together like it was one idea.

Well thank you for the compliment! I disagree as far as the abuse thing, but I respect your opinion. Personally, I think some would prefer an actual depiction of a phobia from the perspective of a person suffering from that phobia, as opposed to an image of a subject displaying irrational fear of something. However, I do think there is a place for both kinds in this contest Thanks again!

sTyLeS wrote:What kind of gun is that modeled after?

It was actually modeled after an airgun, not an actual gun

mitchellp wrote:This is funny... But I'm not sure Woot would be able to print this with what looks like the Travelocity gnome-bullet

Haha, I'm glad someone spotted that. That's exactly what I was modeling him after From my research it shouldn't be a copyright problem in the way I've used it, though. Thanks for your concern!

frik wrote:Why does this just feel like pieced together clipart? Sure the idea is funny, but the gnomes and the gun don't seem to fit together like it was one idea.

Ouch, okay that stings a bit considering I spent many hours over a couple days on this. It's supposed to be incongruous, that's the surreal look I was intending. However, clipart it surely is not. Each of the gnomes was drawn and vectored much larger and shrunk down for the design, perhaps that could be why you think it looks that way? I guarantee you it was a single idea from the start (actually there was a bit more to it initially. I had included a scope with a gnome manning a telescope inside, but I decided to take it out.)

To everyone else who has voted so far, I'm really quite thrilled with my rookie debut here and you all have made me feel very welcome. Thanks wooters.

An airgun, now I see.
It's the Beeman 2006 P17 isn't it?
Although you used a mirror image of the gun, if it were really the left side there would be the safety. Or did you leave that out intentionally?
