Thanks! yeah, I know white usually isn't a favorite on this site, but thought it made the most sense for this idea.

Beautiful use of value to really place depth with this. Very unique idea, too. Great job with this design, it's well-executed.

Oh my gosh, I love this design! I rarely get so excited about a t-shirt design, but this concept is brilliant. Every artist endures those frustrating periods when their would-be designs start building up into mounds of crumpled paper around them, and you went and turned that into beautiful, poetic art. Props! +1

This is such a beautiful design.

Is it really one color though? I don't see how you've made those soft grays with a 2pt black pen.

Re: One Man's Trash ...

People don´t usually like white t-shirts, but on this derby, there are some good entries on this color. And this one has a great concept and the illustration is quite good. My only doubt is how it will print as one color only. The pencil color is much lighter than the black, so it must be printed using halftones, and I´m afraid it will loose a lot of the definition it has.

Yes... it's only 1 color. I drew it on paper and then scanned it in. Then converted it to 1-color. The lines are thick enough to print and it should look great on a shirt... even if the smaller lines are made of half-tones. I'll post a close up soon.

The beauty of cross-hatching is the different tones you can achieve with only 1 color by using this style.

I think this is absolutely stunning, but I'm curious to see whether Woot will think this falls within their rules. You used only one color, but the halftones made the lines different shades of gray which seems to be against the rules.

On the one hand, I hope it stays because it is so nice, but on the other, I have to wonder what other artists would have done with their pieces if they knew they could have used halftones to create different shades of their one color.

Needless to say, they're Woot's rules, and the rules are so often fuzzy, misunderstood, bent, and broken that I'm not going to bet on what might happen here.

Hey HalfWheat... just to clarify... there are no shades of black in my piece. It just gives the illusion of that when you look at it from a distance. All the marks on this piece are solid black, and fall within the size restrictions.

And I don't think woot wanted halftones this week because they wanted people to actually draw the lines and not rely on a photoshop technique. I hand drew this piece entirely, which I feel is what woot wanted for this theme.

Really appreciating all the support and comments on this though! (and of course the votes)

Could you post some close-ups? It's hard to see the details in the limited sized comp.

I think it's an amazing idea, though, and the execution is beautiful!

This image leaves me speechless. :O
The image, the message through it.. i lOve it!
I'm actually working very hard on a story relating to my life, and this image inspires me to keep going... Sometimes I feel as though not many would be interested, but here you make something similar to what i want to create. Maybe i should keep my faith strong to inspire others, the same you just revived my passion for art & creativity.
Have never bought a shirt from this site, but i want this to be my 1ST one! I shall keep it as a reminder of my true goal ... Now where do i vote!? LOL!XD

your comment leaves me speechless what a compliment!! I'm glad you found some inspiration in my artwork. I'm often inspired by the great artists on this site which is how I got started submitting shirts myself. Definitely continue your story! And hopefully this shirt can be your first purchase here! Lot of time left though, and really tough competition.

I love the scanned graphite on paper effect, but I worry about how it would print. Especially since the paper texture sorta got picked up in your halftones. When it prints there might be an awkward aura of black specks all around the design.

im agreeing with this, please post up a higher res image so that we can see how you did this. it would be unfortunate if you won but they couldnt print it because you didnt actually follow the rules. if im understanding this correctly, you drew it in pencil, then when you scanned it in you converted it to one color? not greyscale? then you added halftones to grey out some of the black?

very disappointed that I did not meet the requirements this week. Guess it was too tough to turn a pencil drawing like this into a 1-color piece that met the guidelines. Or I just don't know how to do it.

I'm guessing it probably had to do with some of the comments a little farther up, about how the grayscale look was created. Halftones? Maybe they were too small? Maybe there ended up being partial transparencies or gradients?
Hard to tell looking at the comp image, but woot had the print ready file and must have looked at it.
I'm sure they do that for those in the fog just to make sure it's printable.

Aw man, sorry your submitted artwork didn't work out. I can understand why it didn't, and maybe this is the fairest thing for the rest of the fog, but it is a pity considering what a cool idea this is.

I would be infinitely surprised if this couldn't garner a print for you pretty much anywhere. Though I agree... unless you mean "not just one color because pencil sketching leaves some degree of gradients", you should keep it like this. Keep it sketchy and pencilly and non-colored.

I have to say, though... I obviously can't see the print-ready so I have no clue what woot saw, but this is probably the most disappointing rejection I've seen here in a long time.

Re: One Man's Trash ...

Wanted to let the people interested in this design know that I heard further details from woot. To print this design the best and achieve the look I was going for it would need to be printed with a 3 color simulated process. Which obviously would not be fair to everyone else since this week was a 1 color limit. I submitted the file (as a bitmap version) with small halftones that created the illusion of the shading, and although that WAS within the rules, when they tried to print that version on a tshirt it did not achieve the same look that people were voting for.

So that's why I said that I will try and get this shirt to print somewhere, just not as a 1 color version, rather the 3 color simulated version that will give the best "pencil-sketch" look.

Keep your eyes open for this design in the future and hopefully you'll help me bring it to life.

Thanks for posting this info, and good on Woot to give you further explanations about the rejection. When I first saw the design, and as you can see from my previous post, my doubt was not that it could be printed in 1 color, but that it would look far worse that what we see in your image. So, in the end, this rejection might give you the chance to get this printed as it should. The design is quite good and it would be a shame to see it ruined by the fact that it must be printed in 1 color only, just to follow the derby rules.
