Re: Sixty Six Degrees North

The Arctic circle is all of the land, ocean and sky northward of sixty six and 33' degrees on the globe.

It is a place of surprising biodiversity. For this design I've drawn sixty six (!) animals indigineous to the Arctic. An Arctic circle of life.

This is white on a navy shirt. You can view a BIG VERSION here. Thanks for looking, please vote if you like this design!

Thanks so much darrentf! I put my heart and every last ounce of energy I had into attempting this, I honestly can't believe I finished it in time for the start of the derby.

really love this, great job spirit! did you draw out all the animals and then silhouette them? or did you just draw the silhouettes straight out? i really like them they are full of character and life, really nice details that most wouldn't even bother with. if you did draw them out it would be cool to see a little behind the scenes action! =)

Aw, thank you megsck. I didn't sketch on paper, I drew silhouettes directly in Illustrator with the solid shape tool thingy. For each animal I loaded up a side window with as many video and photo references as I could find to glance over at, and then just kept drawing over and over again in AI, deleting what I didn't like and starting over, trying to stylize and exaggerate the animals but keep a strong sense of the natural world.

And it definitely shows! This shirt deserves to print because it is clear how much work, thought, and soul you put into it. Lovely shirt, and I hope I'll be able to buy one next week!

Spirit, I always love your designs and to top all the talent you seem like a pretty decent human being in all your posts - something that I find lacking a bit on this website as of late. Best wishes to you!

I know that you drew every one and didn't use clip art, but my problem is that it looks like you did. You may spend 300 hours on something, but if it looks like it took 30 minutes, it doesn't matter.

This design is stupendous. Yet another reason I always look for your designs first. The care, research and complex simplicity of this design is more art than shirt. Well done (again). GMV and, hopefully, my order.

I understand what your saying Kyle, but I would bet if I gave you, or anyone here really, 30 minutes to nicely trace that many animals and make sure that they formed a circle like done here they wouldn't be able to do it. Great job on this Spirit I know it would've taken me hours as well

Tracing would take me 300 hours. If I were to use clipart (not that SG did), it would go really quickly. SG makes this point himself:

I think he meant it look like clip art which just involves clicking a preset image and placing it. Granted, someone once took the time to make each image for clip, but I think he's comparing him more to the placer of clip art than the creator of clip art if that makes sense. Weird accusation, but I think that what he was getting at... And I agree, I could do this in third minutes, but it wouldn't look nice; it would be a slopfest.

*EDIT* looks like he already responded why I was typing this....

Personally, I think it looks great, and we all know the Spirit took the time to make all these little awesome critters!

Wow! I had to create a ton of animal silhouettes for a project before, and when you're trying to be very accurate with each animal, it's quite a task. Impressive feat Spiritgreen: )

Comments like this always bother me. This is an art site and I think that valid criticism should not only not be dismissed, but be addressed and discussed intelligently.

Re: Sixty Six Degrees North

This is excellent, major props to you for drawing them all out. I'm so glad you didn't resort to stock vector images. From my perspective, I never assumed they were stock vectors, because I can see that you added your own style. It gives them a lot of life for silhouettes. Your effort really shows and improves the design, well done.

The same image done in stock vectors would look pretty flat and ugly, but it looks beautiful drawn out in your style. I hope other designers take a lesson from this.

This is beautiful! I love how you only put the coordinates for the arctic instead of writing the word "arctic". I also love how much thought and effort you put into your designs. You obviously put a lot of effort into designing each animal, making it your own, and making sure the placement was perfect, and it shows!! I will buy this if it places.

Damn, Spiritgreen, if you keep this up you're going to make me broke

The detail on all the antlers, horns, wings, and tails, as well as the stances of each animal, are beautiful renderings. The more I look, the more I appreciate it. Way to go, Spiritgreen. Amazing!

One nitpick, one question:

Nitpick:
Reindeer and Caribou are the same species: http://www.taiga.net/yourYukon/col061.html

Question:
In the shirt image, there's some gray shading in the white silhouettes. Is that caused by the "real shirt" shirt template or is it in the design?

Spiritgreen

Re: Sixty Six Degrees North

sasham', this is a Tundra Reindeer and a Peary Caribou. They are technically subspecies of Rangifer Tarandus, but have enough visual differences, and they live in different parts of the Arctic, to explain why they're known by different names.

The design is a one-color print. White on navy. The gray you're seeing is the natural shadowing on the shirtcomp.

I've said this already a few times but:

Thanks so much to everyone for the support on this design! It's been wonderful to see it in the fog all week. I'm really gratified that people liked this so much. Thank you!

I didn't realize that. I thought you had some gray shading in there.

Re: Sixty Six Degrees North

Nice drawings. I kind of wish it had just had the top of a circle, representing everything above 66°.

Spiritgreen

quality posts: 177 Private Messages Spiritgreen

@sTyLeS, if you click the 'big version' link you'll see the clean digital file. On a shirt, naturally you have texture and ripples in the fabric which is what you're seeing in the comp. :^)

@TheWanker, oh you mean a side view of the globe? Well the arctic circle is a full circle, and that's what you'd see if you were looking down on the planet from directly above the North pole, and seeing a circle filled everywhere above 66 degrees and 33 minutes longitude.

The fact that you have this "natural shadowing" not just on your shirt image, but also on your design detail and the design blow-up background in your shirt comp strikes me as dishonest, as we see from the people who have posted that they thought that it was part of the design. Of course, if it's in your print-ready, then it is part of the design. *shrug*
And I still disagree on putting reindeer/caribou down twice if the intent is to show the diversity in the Arctic Circle.
Also, there are several small creatures in your design that, due to their shapes and sizes, are rather indistinguishable ... blobs. I suspect you did this to represent their size with respect to the larger animals (without actually drawing things to scale), but the end result is that those specific creatures don't really work well in silhouette. I've taken the liberty of highlighting those creature silhouettes in red here: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BUCmzerJ77s/TQocPBYWNYI/AAAAAAAAALo/OrNEjln-CPs/s1600/SpiritGreenPolarDesign.jpg
Add to that the fact that I agree with Kylemittskus. This may not be clip art, but it looks like clip art, and we only have your word that it isn't since you did your work on the computer rather than drawing-and-scanning. (And unlike some people who have commented, I find silhouettes much easier than detail.)

Of course, there are worse designs in the fog that I could "pick on", especially considering some of the designs that aren't fogging that clearly took more work to create (than those), but those arguments against designs that already exist and yet-another-in-the-endless-series-of-snowmen-with-really-long-ears have already been taken up.

I just want you to know how deeply hurt I was when I saw the winning submission for the derby this morning. I think your submission is stellar—far better than any of the others in this competition—and the amount of work you obviously put into it blows my mind. Anyway, this is excellent, and I'm still rooting for you to take home a winning spot.
