Re: two turntables and a gramophone

This design comes from my love of all music, is inspired by the intertwined "underground" hip-hop and jazz scenes.

This started around the early 90's in South Central LA.The Goodlife was a health food store on Crenshaw and Exposition, that would have an open mic night for rappers on thursday. The amazing thing about it, is it was a gathering of artists (rappers, painters, dancers, musicians), trying to push themselves and each other artistically. It was the first time I saw rappers with cadences that purposely emulated the sounds of Miles Davis, Bird, Coltrane, ect. Leimert Park was a short drive down Crenshaw, and a hotbed of Jazz. The two scenes mingled and there was nothing like seeing freestyle rapping over improv Jazz. There's a documentary called "This is the LIfe" that looks back at some of the high points of what was going on there in the early 90s.

This Video is a more recent version of rap and live jazz. Busdriver and Kneebody "Gun Control"

Thanks. I got this done, then spent about 2 hours tweaking just the colors, till I found a balance that I thought worked well.

I love how you chose to keep the design looking like a series of sketches. It turned out very well, and gmv.

Nice work man. I am digging the raw feel to this.

This doesn't feel like your normal work. If it wasn't for the pre-derby, I would have never known till I saw your name.

I'm usually not a fan of designs taking up the entire shirt, but I'll make an exception here. Great stuff! If only there were a saxophonist as well... GMV anyway though.

I didn't want it to be too Jazz heavy, so I left out the Saxophonist. I've been listening to Bird & Diz a lot lately, and was going to try to incorporate both of them into the desin. But, in the end, it was just too much.

I tried to be real "bebop" with this design, I wanted it to be loose and look like a bunch of chaos, but when you really take time to look at it, there is an actual order to things. I don't know how well that worked out in the end, but it is how I approached it.

I have replaced the word 'microphone' with 'gramaphone' in my mental song lyrics and I find that it sounds much better. I will be mailing my cd directly to Mr Beck, and demand that he rerecord it with the improved lyrics. I suggest you all do the same. Now if I could only remember where it's at...

I'm not going to lie, it makes me a little sad that people think of Beck, instead of Mantronix or Malcom McLaren and the World Famous Supreme Team when they hear that phrase.

I don't think it can be helped. Mtv played that song about every hour when it came out.

Same with any popular and alternative radio station.

It was inescapable.

Looking forward to checking out the videos when I get off.

I agree, and I actually like the Beck song. But for me, it's all about Malcom McLaren (Duck Rock!), though I'm sure most fans of "Where it's at" wouldn't appreciate that album.

On a positive note, you'll be able to round out that collection of shiny penguin shirts, tomorrow night.

I'm seriously bummed out about this, but I guess it's better to know now than to have my hopes up.

I was fully committed to staying up and getting this shirt at midnight. Was going to attempt to get first sucker and everything.

I do see a honorable mention and subsequent editors choice in the future of this shirt.

Ummm... woot gave people who want them an artsy shirt. It had a girl's face on it, which is what all yalls want. That forfeits any rights anyone has to complain about what prints ever. Who is anyone to say that the hundreds of pandering shirts that look exactly the same aren't art?

I'm seriously bummed out about this, but I guess it's better to know now than to have my hopes up.

In all seriousness, I am too. This is one of your best designs, and I thought it had a great shot at printing. But hey, there's always room for more unimaginative penguin shirts, right?

Sonofa.....

This was in the fog all week long. I was COUNTING on buying this shirt.

The "sounds like hell" t-shirt got a late rejection - so this would make the fog - but I guess now it's obvious that this isn't one of the top 3 vote getters. Such a shame - I was sure it was easily in the top 3.

This was a great theme this week - I REALLY wanted to buy 3 shirts. But no. Now maybe one.
