Re: I'm not contagious, I swear
Neat "werewolf" theme here.
Re: I'm not contagious, I swear
What's a little rabies between friends?
This design is better than his last few. Also, this derby catered to cutesy squirrels, what did you expect?
Still not my taste, though.
Re: I'm not contagious, I swear
Background sure looks familiar..
Re: I'm not contagious, I swear
Besides the fact that this makes me go ewwwww....looks like the poor one in the middle has a stump for an arm. Also didn't realize that having rabies would also change fur color.

haha, this comment made me laugh ridiculously loud, my cube mates are all looking at me funny now.
despite the similar elements, i like this, the characters have much more expression than usual, i hope you keep that up. zombies are my weakness.

I would disagree with that. "Woodland Animals" doesn't have to mean "Cutesy Squirrel".
Re: I'm not contagious, I swear
Why doesn't the acorn have a shadow? And what's up with the voyeur squirrel in the back?
Re: I'm not contagious, I swear
This kinda makes my day. Really enjoy it. =)
Re: I'm not contagious, I swear
Typical Ramyb design, but it's not like much of stuff of late. His designs will never be to my taste though.
Realistically, we're bracing ourselves for Squirrelpocalypse 2011.
Looks like Ramyb took that a little too literally.
kylemittskus wrote:...And what's up with the voyeur squirrel in the back?
That's zombie squirrel's girlfriend. She has to watch from the sidelines now.
Johndis5 wrote:That's zombie squirrel's girlfriend. She has to watch from the sidelines now.
Freud would have a heyday with that.
Re: I'm not contagious, I swear
The brown things on the right don't even look like squirrels at all! Even less so than Ramy's usual.. What is wrong with the one on the far right's head? That thing looks more like a human baby than a rodent.
Also controversy does NOT create votes other than from the goobers who spite vote thinking it's going to matter at all. The vast majority of voters (ESPECIALLY ramyb voters) don't read the threads and may not even realize they exist. These are the people who don't have any clue what the Reckoning is and who panic when a shirt sells out, remember.

It's a cartoon. Relax.
This actually made me chuckle when I saw it pop up; it fits the Derby, I knew Ramy would be doing squirrels, and they're amusing cartoony characters, so no problems there, really. It's a pretty good Ramy design, and while I think the zombie fad needs to be shotgunned back into the grave, it works for me.
Having said that, I find there to be too much dead space between the critters up front, and the one hiding behind the tree seems to be lost in the background. So some potential there for improvement, but overall not bad.

Goober?
That made me smile. I think the last time I heard the word goober was in middle school. I guess my response should be something like "I'm rubber and you're glue..."
I enjoy reading these threads, but the bashing of this one artist just gets annoying. I've seen PLENTY of Paint style submissions need the criticism more than these shirts.

'm not contagious, I swear
erm on my monitor i can see 7 colours
brown
orange
black
white
beigeish (colour) of left squirrel
blueish grey in background

Is it just my monitor?

The background trees are actually asphalt on blue halftone- the design has just the first six colors you mentioned
Thanks everyone who has enjoyed the design. I had a lot of fun with the expressions of the characters and hope you like the outcome ![]()

Yes, but none of those paint style submissions ever win. If this were only getting 30-80 votes I'm sure there would be no bashing.
I *do* love squirrels but I'm not a fan of the design.
kylemittskus wrote:Why doesn't the acorn have a shadow? And what's up with the voyeur squirrel in the back?
I was really wondering about that background squirrel too.
Ok, seriously? Rabies? You have to debate about something so you pick Rabies?
//facepalm
So I assume no other shirt design has ever shown something that might be rare or non-existent?
Let's agree that rabies in rodents is very rare but can exist. Regardless of your stand on the issue, it really has nothing to do with this derby entry.
I'm trimming the rabies comments out as off topic.
►►►►Read about the new Woot Shopping Cart and change to shipping charges.
I think it's a much more creative design than the past few he has submitted, particularly the most recent penguin one.
Assassin15 wrote:I was really wondering about that background squirrel too.
It's probably infected too. Rabies is the zombie-virus of the animal world.

Not sure if I count as a Ramby voter. I read threads, but I do own a lot of his designs and vote for his designs. This one however I'm going to have to gun down.
I like the theme, the positioning, the scared squirrel in the woodline, even most of the art; however, you hit the nail on the head. The squirrel on the far right is deformed. What really does it is the nose. It is inconsistent with the rest of the squirrels. It has a bump nose instead of the cute button nose. Now every time I look at it, it reminds me of the Ted Turner puppies from Family Guy or some giant zit full of unholy amounts of pus.
I have one question on the zombie squirrel also. Is the line for the right side of his head a shadow on his face or just leftover line that didn't get erased? Not trying to be picky, just curious. No, that's a lie, now I've switched into picky mode.
Actually, looking at it again, the shadow falls on both sides of its' body (zombie squirrel). I'm not an artist or a physics guy, but given the rest of the shadows and lighting angle, should this be visible? On the other two squirrels, the shadowing is good (even on the mutant ;D), but now that I've seen it I can't un see it.
In the end: great concept, on theme, perfect on the cute note, but I've come to expect better from you Ramby. The NOSE, THE NOSE!!!!! :D
Re: I'm not contagious, I swear
ever since i saw the thumbnail for the mutant turtle and went 'ZOMBIE Turtles, YES!' and was then disappointed when that was not the case i've been waiting...
well, it's not zombie turtles but it IS a cool idea. i could wish the 'normal' squirrels were a bit better executed, but i still like the design. i hope you continue to improve your artwork and stretch your own creative boundaries some more, i'd like to see just what you could do...
Paradox55 wrote:Besides the fact that this makes me go ewwwww....looks like the poor one in the middle has a stump for an arm. Also didn't realize that having rabies would also change fur color.
If you're going to be this picky, then why isn't it just possible that squirrels can be different colors to begin with? One of the weakest arguments against a Ramy design I've seen.

Hey I didn't say that I had an issue with people who don't read the forums, it's certainly not for everybody.
My point is that the controversy on the boards over the artists integrity and the quality of their work does not in any way cause them to win.
megsck wrote:haha, this comment made me laugh ridiculously loud, my cube mates are all looking at me funny now.
Glad to be of service. :p
BTW, Ramy you did a superb job suggesting the depth of the background. It's really effective. Fun characters too. I like this shirt a whole lot.

So...I hate to break it to you guys...but, squirrels almost never...and I want to emphasize NEVER...contract or transmit rabies.

"I like it" is not a reason to give something $1000. I like my sister. I wouldn't necessarily hire her if I ran a business. I'd hire people who had evident skills, obvious pride in their work, and substance of character. Proven sales record would be nice, but ultimately meaningless without also having those qualities.

Your sister is not a design in a t-shirt contest.
When the winner is determined by a majority public vote, "I like it" is in fact *the* reason to give something $1000.

Irrelevant example under the current framework. No one is being hired by woot. People are being REWARDED for receiving the most votes in a CONTEST. The fact that you don't agree with the framework is completely irrelevant to this line of discussion. So yes, "I like it" is a perfectly acceptable reason "to give something $1000.
Re: I'm not contagious, I swear
Yep, this derby is pretty much going how I'd expected.
Re: I'm not contagious, I swear
HUGE fan of your work. But the zombie thing is not really working for me. GL tho.
Re: I'm not contagious, I swear
I like the frightened squirrel hiding behind the tree and the creepy rabid eyes.

Bats transmit rabies. Actually I'm surprised there aren't many bat designs. Those are totally woodland creatures. Plus people love bats. They even have their own superhero named after them. I don't see squirrel-man fighting crime around any cities.

Holy crud cutter! I wonder if THIS is what Ray Stevens was talking about in his song...the day the squirrel went berserk.
Or maybe it's just beer froth, I've seen that happen on cops loads of times.
wrong spot
Re: I'm not contagious, I swear
Although I don't normally post much about it, I guess I would group myself in with the "ramy design haters." While its still not something I would buy, I am glad to see that it looks better than some of the old expressionless entries. nice job.

Which is exactly why I voted for this shirt. I work in an animal clinic and seeing this shirt cracks me up everyday. I can't wait to buy it!!

... I have been guilty of voting for a less than awesome shirt that I like, but won't wear, if people are just bashing the artist. I also won't vote for an artist or their shirts if they bash another artist based on their overall style or with no real reason. (With the exception of the obvious robbery - but it's time to let it go, it wasn't even Ramy who did it).
99% of the time, I vote for a shirt I or my husband would wear. That's it. You can have amazing artistic ability and beautifully rendered concepts and designs, but I don't want that in a shirt. I want that on my wall. If it prints, I buy it. If it sells out, I pay the extra $5.

RE: design - This reminds me of Foamy the Squirrel in full rant mode. If it prints, someone in this house will wear it.
