Re: You can't trust something that won't stay dead
Phoenixes are a lot like zombies. Especially when they are zombies.
Hope you like!

Love thiiiiiiiis!!!! Excellent choice in shirt, I'm glad you didn't go with straight up black. This dark charcoal makes the colors pop a lot more.
Phoenixes are epic. <3
Re: You can't trust something that won't stay dead
I know this site complains a lot about phoenix, but I really like this one a lot.
Good work. :D
Re: You can't trust something that won't stay dead
From the small image, I thought this was a RamyB and PatrickSpens Collab. I would actually be curious to see that.

Ha! This cracked me up! Great design ![]()
Re: You can't trust something that won't stay dead
Ha. Clever coloring! This is surely fog-bound.

Of course it is. Every other entry he's put up has hit the fog, why wouldn't this one?

I thought it was RamyB, too. Funny since I couldn't tell RamyB's actual design was his this week.
Great job JLEGOS!
Re: You can't trust something that won't stay dead
I got to say the only thing making this zombie is the word balloon with a brain in it. Many designs have implemented this technique this week and I'm not diggin' it.

Do you not know what a phoenix is?...
miztickow wrote:Do you not know what a phoenix is?...
Oh I know what a phoenix is but its not a zombie... the theme this week. The use of the phoenix is arbitrary and pandering at best, but if all is needed is a speech balloon with a brain in it to make a design acceptable for the theme then the design is weak and not clever, IMO.

princeton.edu definition of zombie: a dead body that has been brought back to life by a supernatural force
that's what a phoenix is except it happens to be a fiery bird
also, I must point out that you used the "add brain for instant zombie" technique that you hate so much yourself in "Make a Wish, Jimmy!" (without the brain, it's just a corpse at a birthday party)

I beg to differ but I can see you'll debate the point even though you're wrong. There's a vast difference between a phoenix and a zombie. Phoenixes are reborn from ashes to full life as they were prior to molting and dying in a burst of flame. I don't need to reference a dictionary to confirm that and use the words in a semanitic twist as you did. Zombies are dead and then brought back but not to life but unlife or as most would say "undead" They're not quite living and not quite dead. Again the point still stands this is a phoenix with a word balloon with a brain to make it be on theme and nothing more.
As to my design, the design would still read whether there was a brain for the cake or not. As to this design, it would not.

That's why this is clever. It's not like it's a squirrel or rabbit zombie; it's something that's already really close to a zombie being made full zombie.

Nice work JLEGOS! I like the coloring and play on themes. My only question is when you shotgun the phoenix zombie to the head will it still be reborn as a zombie?
alis0ntalb0t you made me LOL. Couldn't tell Ramyb's design... just look for the cutefying of something see in the top 20 if he's not feeling the jive.
i.e. which shirt has sold the most copies. Yeah I rib him, but I also buy his shirts; I figure that's a fair enough trade :D.

Wow! I love it when people get schooled fantsy/scifi/horror style!
Midgerock great job on the molting. That just earned you a +Uno on all your shirts from me. Goodluck this derby, that debate was both fun and crazy amazing!
:D,

It's actually a jlegos and ramyb collab.
Ramyb already mentioned in the other jlegos submission threads that he helps him out.

Looks more like a Ramy design submitted under someone else's name. First thought when I saw the "eyes".

I dunno...the missing gobbets of flesh in the skull and the white-out eyes spoke "zombie" to me, even without the brain-bubble...I actually had to go back and "get" the phoenix part.
Re: You can't trust something that won't stay dead
Man jlegos you make good shirts! I like the more subtle zombie theme. It does look a little ramyb but it's a good feel.
Re: You can't trust something that won't stay dead
Love it! Hope I get the opportunity to purchase this shirt

Nah, white-out eyes are a RamyB thing. Many of his designs feature them, zombie or not.
Thought people have in the past complained about them, saying they make his woodland creatures look like zombies, so...

I'm not even touching the ramyb thing. My point was that, at first glance, I immediately saw "zombie," not "phoenix with a thought bubble," so midgerock's contention that the only thing that makes jlegos' entry a zombie is the brain bubble doesn't wash with me.
I wonder about the mechanics of a phoenix zombie...if a phoenix becomes a zombie (presumably by being bitten by a zombie), then proceeds to be reborn...what rises from the ashes? A non-zombie phoenix? Or a zombie phoenix? Is zombie-ness something that carries through the supernatural rebirth of the phoenix?

well it appears my opinion doesn't wash with others as well since people seem to keep voting for it.
The point's really You could have any supernatural creature; i.e. mummy, ghost, banshee, etc all with glowing eyes like this and most wouldn't consider it a zombie. You put a word bubble with a brain and wallah! we have zombie. Not clever that its a phoenix anymore than any other supernatural creature which returns from the dead.

I'd assume that the process of becoming ash would cleanse it of the zombie virus before it is reborn and would be a normal phoenix.

jlegos is ramyb. are you blind?

Re: You can't trust something that won't stay dead
What a brilliant shirt! I am so in love with this design. I wants it. I needs it.

I'm really not up on my phoenices (phoenixii?)...do they typically get reborn with their skulls missing flesh in a very characteristically zombie fashion? Because if that's a typical part of phoenix lore, then I'll concede the point (which, to clarify, is that I think jlegos is presenting a phoenix which has become a zombie, not *just* rebranding "phoenix" as "a kind of zombie already").
As for who's voting for what, well that's kinda why the Electoral College exists, innit?

well it looked like it was molting to me. Regardless of what jlegos is presenting or intending on presenting the point still stands that this design if it didn't have the brain balloon would not read as a zombie and would be off theme for this week. For me if the brain balloon is needed to make it on theme, well, that's weak. Its as arbitrary as having a mummy, ghost, banshee, any other supernatural creature, etc with a brain balloon to make it on theme.

That's a good point. It probably would have narrowed the field some. "zombie" is obviously being stretched extremely thin on this derby. Some of that might be because there have been so many zombie submissions on past derbies. Lot of the good ideas have been used up.
I think, reading the derby text, they were hoping for "hard" zombie shirts. They really didn't get it though. There are only a few in the fog that are just zombies and not zombies as a gagline. That all said, this one is at least slightly clever. Far better than the humanic cookie monster, unicorn, and DNA shirts in the fog.
Re: You can't trust something that won't stay dead
I really want this shirt
Re: You can't trust something that won't stay dead
I want this! Bring it back! So cute!
Re: You can't trust something that won't stay dead
Soooooo tis the season for this shirt. Any chance it can get re-submit so it can finally get the credit it's due and be made? Put me down for at least one!
