dude. I won't say you don't have talent, but I will encourage you to use it. Every week your designs have about as much variation as Scooby Doo episodes have. Nothing against Scooby Doo, of course, I'm just saying it was always a guy in a mask.

Interesting design, but not sure if I see the cyberpunk in it. Nothing hackerish or postmodern about a possibly homicidal bunny.
Re: Overkill
Not gonna lie, the bunnies are wicked cute.
I know I haven't been around shirt.woot long, but is it just me that thinks this looks suspiciously like a combination of the typical cute animals of the poster's usual shirts, and some of the other shirts in this derby? (Specifically: How's My Driving, CyBear Punk! and the drink like All in a Day's Work)
Maybe not, I'm just curious.
Re: Overkill
How do you people not see the cyber punk? It's wearing a scouter (or something that looks like), is covered in high tech futuristic weaponry, and is accessing this all through a computer. Not to mention the fact that, by bullying another rabbit, it is behaving like a punk. Gawsh you people are so nitpicky!
Re: Overkill
that rabbit is most definitely punk and thems some high tech weapons. just got a strange urge to watch robocop. >.>
I feel like the shirt would have looked better without the tree silhouettes in the background.
Also, the turrets above the bunny are pointing to the side of the other bunny instead of at him.

I'm with ya on the comment about the trees...I feel it could use a more industrial/grungy-looking backdrop for sure.
However, intentional turret aim is intentional. Notice the bulletholes in the ground around the bunny with his hands up and his carrot down? Yeah, hence the aim not riiiiight at him. It's ok, I forgive your inattention to minor detail =P haha

Well, I see the minigun barrels smoking, so I believe the shots came from them, but you'd think the turrets would be pointed at the bunny for intimidation if they weren't fired.
And here I was hoping, for a brief moment, that at least a cyberpunk-themed derby would be cutesy-free.
I hate this shirt on a molecular level.

Hrm...I didn't notice the smoke there before. Now I get to feel like an human for my earlier sarcastic comment. Oh, the irony =P lol
So, umm, maybe the bunny has some out-of-camera-shot friends? I dunno...your guess is as good as mine!

Cutesy isn't the problem here. Theme is. Cyberpunk is such an atmospheric genre, and this design has none of the qualities that make cyberpunk. Mattcom's entry shows that, at the very least, bunny-themed entries can be on theme. If this is cyberpunk, so was "Winning the Race".
Re: Overkill
how does this shirt end up in the fog for a cyber-punk themed contest? Comparing this "art" to some of the others in this particular derby I'm actually a little upset. It's not RamyB's fault, he's doing his thing and that's fine, I dig his style for certain derbies and not for others, he has more talent than I do. I blame the voters. If this shirt gets printed for a cyber-punk contest, remember, you're the ones that did it.
Re: Overkill
I have to agree with some of the others here; I'm really not seeing the cyberpunk in this at all.
Let's see if woot shows their double standard again when it comes to Ramy. This is obviously not cyberpunk, and more of a futuristic military concept.
They rejected Walmazan's initial sub, now it is time for them to hold the same standard to this design. It is in no way cyberpunk.

Re: Overkill
It's a shame people gotta hate every single shirt you make. I usually don't love your designs because I don't care to wear the cartoon/comic style shirts, but I really like this.
Haters gonna hate...
Re: Overkill
How is this on topic?
Technology and large guns isn't the same thing as Cyberpunk. Can't believe this hasn't been rejected yet.
Re: Overkill
Seeing this design in a cyberpunk derby makes my blood boil. For shame Ramy, for shame.
Re: Overkill
The problem with the derby theme is it forces a "threshold" of cyberpunk. This design contains a couple elements of cyberpunk, but is lacking in the general atmosphere. For some people, this is enough to keep it on topic. For others, there is not enough and to them merits rejection. It's really up to the rejectionator, so arguing your threshold of cyberpunk really gets us nowhere.
Though it is irritating to see "theme dress-up" on a consistent basis from ramyb. But can you really blame him? A. They sell. B. His other designs are met with as much hate as his fluffy animal ones.
That's all for now. TL;DR: if it's not rejected, it's on theme (for this derby).
Re: Overkill
As soon as I saw this design, THIS came to mind:
http://shirt.woot.com/Derby/Entry.aspx?id=37662
Honestly, I'm surprised no one has pointed it out so far.
Re: Overkill
Throwing a computer and a gun on a white bunny is not cyberpunk.
Overkill indeed.
You guys are obviously not seeing what Ramy did here. He took the word "cyberpunk", split it into "cyber" and "punk", and based his design off that. Cyber means add a bunch of technology to the rabbit, and Punk means to turn him into a bully. It's either the most literal definition of the word cyberpunk or confusion in its purest form.
Re: Overkill
On- or off-topic aside, I don't understand this.
Why is the bunny shooting at the other bunny?
Substitute anything cutesypoo here, and it would make as much/as little sense.
Minus animals and swirly, glowy side-placement things, what's left?

I'm pretty sure people have. I've seen one or two in the comment thread, and outside of that...
This shouldn't exist because it already existed. Adding a rabbit in place of the turtle just makes it make even less sense than the original one did.

I totally agree with you.
I was super excited to see some awesome designs, because how can you NOT with a cyberpunk theme? and then I was like "Oh look....Ramyb did a bunny...again." His designs are becoming less creative and more 'which animal should I use this time', and frankly I've become tired of them.
Re: Overkill
Since my "math symbol" critiques keep getting deleted, I'll reiterate with words.
I feel this piece is derivative of the artist's prior work and is, at best, tangentially on-topic. dy/dx
Re: Overkill
Haven't really been on here for a few months...looks like I didn't miss anything.
Look! Something cute is doing something evil! It's so priceless!
Dear Woot: Priceless won't coax me back. See you.
Re: Overkill
Why do you find any excuse to use a cute woodland animal in something?
Also this design has nothing to do with cyber hacking, please make more topic relevant designs
One more gargleblaster, please stop this. This has nothing to do with cyberpunk. Cyberpunk is a world of advanced technology and a breakdown of social standards. It is gritty, raw, often dark, and not at all this.
Re: Overkill
Just because this artist's designs have proven to sell should not mean that this design's failure to adhere to being in theme should go without notice and without action.
"Cyberpunk" does not mean to separate the two words 'cyber' and 'punk', albeit as clever as it might be to try and submit it simply is not adhering to this theme. I think the wikipedia link to the meaning of "Cyberpunk" needs reiterating and a serious read-through.
As for the similarities to "Winning The Race"? Could also cause this to fall under 'already been done' or 'too similar to a past winning entry', in mild agreement with that.
Ignoring everything else, I can't believe people are trying to claim that bulling somehow equals punk! C'mon, what kind of logic is that? That's not what punk is!
A tshirt with a big kid hitting a little one wouldn't somehow represent "punk". Therefore neither does this, not even slightly.
I can't be bothered to argue about everything else that is wrong with this being in the fog in a cyberpunk derby.
Re: Overkill
I have looked at this image a few times, and I still really don't see how it represents the cyberpunk genre. I could go on with my opinions on why I feel that, but there's other people here who have already stated what I feel much better. Lack of atmosphere, being cutesy in a genre based on grunge, and a backdrop that screams, "This is not the Utopian future I wanted!"
I see an issue by taking this as the two words "cyber" and "punk" though. The description of the derby itself implies that they were expecting shirts that are based on the cyberpunk theme over clever wordplay. The bunny on the left does have the idea of cyber down, but I see a distinct lack of punk subculture. If it was punk, then the bunny on the left would be fighting back for it's right for the carrot. On the other hand it could be taken as the left bunny being a very right-wing punk, but I don't think it was Ramy's intention to draw a neo-fascist bunny.
He could redo the shirt, making it more cyberpunk themed. Someone beat him to it though, and also had it submitted before Ramy's even.

Well the only similarities are the same green shirt color, the same exact bunny, and the same smoking machine gun...
Re: Overkill
i would point out that it is clearly off topic as many people have already, but this being RamyB i very much doubt anything will be done about it. it will end up printing, selling out cause no-one knows what cyberpunk means and life will go on
Re: Overkill
Ya we all know cute bunnies are cute and sell well but calling this cyberpunk is insulting. It's gone from the point of being kitsch to meme and needs to stop.
ToasterP wrote:I Don't see the theme in this at all, guess we'll see if it stays around.
I agree, this isn't remotely reading as cyberpunk. Sad thing is, a little more effort and it could be. Add some glowy tattoos, a funky colored mohawk and a handful of random piercings and it would be on topic.
tiar wrote:I agree, this isn't remotely reading as cyberpunk. Sad thing is, a little more effort and it could be. Add some glowy tattoos, a funky colored mohawk and a handful of random piercings and it would be on topic.
Honestly that wouldn't even do it. The punk part of cyberpunk has virtual nothing to do with the punk movement of the 80s. Tattoos and mohawks does not a cyberpunk make.
Cyberpunk is about high tech fringe. A kid in his basement can be just as much a cyber punk as some guy with a laptop and a mohawk. Cute bunnies will NEVER be cyberpunk.

I would concur with this delineation between punk that is cyber and cyberpunk. That being said many representations of cyberpunk have used the themes/motifs of punk culture as a base for character construction(see Ice-T's character J-bone in the movie version of Johhny Mnemonic).
...
On the level of contributive questions: Does anyone else think that the lighter shirt color/ lack of typical dystopian background elements, much like Robert's Sunset(I am not attempting to compare the shirts on any other front than shirt color and backdrop choice) might play a role in why some are not able to see the theme? Because I think if this was on asphalt with a with an implied decayed city skyline there would be more people willing to make the leap with the piece as a whole.
just my 0.02
J-Bone and Spyder (oddly enough played by Black Flag front man Henry Rollins) are two great examples of cyber punks. They are junkers looking through trash and parts to make tech that they can use. They are taking the left overs of society and living in the shadows. The "punk" parts come from their anarchist views of society and not from how they dress or what they look like.
ToasterP hit it right on when he mentioned dystopian. This shirt is lacking any form of the cyberpunk theme. Hell the bunny has a late from Starbucks. This is more cyberyuppie then cyberpunk.

I have tried to remain quiet, but I am a bit frustrated and confused. This to me is obvious playing off the word cyberpunk and not the cyberpunk genre itself or the derby description. It is a literal interpretation. When I did literal interpretation of an oddball for the oddball derby I got this: "Rejected because: Good literal translation of the derby title, but not what we're going for - see the derby description." Am I missing something? What is the difference here?

Sadly I think this week is a case of soooo many people being off theme that Woot just would rather let them all slide instead of rejecting half the entries in the derby.
So we'll end up with a "Cyberpunk" derby won by a mecha-bunny, a tree, and a tron shirt.. lol Ramy is rarely on theme anyway, and he isn't usually rejected for it either, so in the end it probably doesn't matter much.

Okay. My bad. I guess somewhere in the prethread Tgentry stated it had to be at least 3 characters for the oddball derby. Good to know literal interpretations of the theme are still open. I ruled out since that rejection.

I have to agree on the "no cyberpunk". It's a really cute design and I'd love to see it in another rodeo.

It would be nice if Woot came forward and explained how some of these enteries meet the theme. Really what is the point of having a theme if nobody is expected to follow the theme? I would like to know how this and a few other shirts in the derby can be considered cyberpunk. Even some of the good designs (like SUNSET by RGLEE) don't seem to be on topic. It seems like some folks think that "cyber punk" = "robot" or "computer". just cause there is a robot in the design doesn't make it cyber punk.

The difference is that robbie explained quite well how his fits, while this is basically a rehash of another tee ramy's other half created even if it WAS cyberpunk. There are other tees in the fog that don't fit (The gimmicky cybirdpunk evangelist being prime suspect #2), but nothing is more off topic than this one, and nothing is more generic and "similar shirts exist"y in the fog right now than this.
If you have a problem, you rectify the underlying cause. If you have a number of things to take care of, you get to the most important issue first. If you need to vacuum, paint the garage, and do laundry, you do laundry, because you need clothes tomorrow. If your roommate or wife or friends or whatever complain that you're not doing the other things too, they have missed the entire point of priorities and what it means to be important. Ramy's piece doesn't have a shred of similarity to the theme, and is completely a less-conceptual rehash of an earlier piece (one inextricably linked to him, in the same style). Other pieces have a shred of that theme. If woot feels they are off theme, they should axe those pieces too. But Ramy's is undeniable. there is no honorable excuse for keeping it in til the end. It is the least on theme, and the most similar to other designs. Woot may decide to axe a bunch of stuff. That is their choice. This isn't about deciding. It's about what is right. It is the biggest offender on multiple levels, and it shouldn't print.

Re: Overkill
The fiancee and I both own a couple of Ramy's shirts. They were from derby's where cute isn't so bad. But this shirt... makes me want to punch a kitten in rage. It just completely and utterly misses the point of cyberpunk. And just feels like a cheap cop out both artistically and stylistically. By this metric you slap a targeting reticle and a gun on something and bam... cyberpunk. If Bladerunner or Neuromancer was in the same style as this, we wouldn't even be having this derby cause no one would ever have cared except to mock it.
killmak wrote:I completely agree. Ramyb is not the only one guilty of being extremely off topic this week. More people complain about him though as he is almost always off topic.
That seems to be the gist of things around here. You have a derby theme and then Ramyb as a separate entity. He gets special privileges because his shirts make a lot of money for woot; mostly due to his following of brainwashed, cutsey-loving fan-boys who wouldn't know an on-theme shirt if it came up and bit 'em. Though I'm not saying he's the only one off theme, especially this week.
That being said, I actually have a couple Ramyb shirts and I believe that he is a good artist and can do tremendous work. It's just unfortunate that both him and woot feel the need to pacify the sheep to an extent of ruining what could be really good derbies. But hey, money makes the world go 'round, right?

This shirt is why I am leaving Woot. I want ONE derby without cutesey stuff in it, and I thought cyberpunk could be the one. Woot, why wont you do awesome/nerdy shirts anymore? I am tired of the same boring bunnies/penguins. Do SOMETHING creative! There are so many great shirts that get submitted, and shirts like this win out over them without even being on topic.
It was fun while it lasted. I will give it a few months, maybe something will be good at that point.

It's insulting how not thematic this is in a cyberpunk derby. Slapping heavy machinery on anything does not make it cyberpunk. Would it be clockpunk to have a bunny wearing a watch? Of course not. Yet somehow this shirt persists.
