Worked fine with TapReader on my iPhone. Took the pic from my monitor.

(I don't think the poster was saying the code didn't work, just that his/her phone was not capable of reading it due to a lack of smartphone-itude)

I'm quite fond of the potential hilarity that could ensue if someone snaps your picture in this, not knowing what the code does.

I had to scan the QR code from my phone.
This design has so much win!
If this shirt prints I hope the QR code is scan-able.

The idea is cute, but I just don't like the execution. Did you know that as much as 30% of a QR code can be missing, and generally still be recognized by phones? You can also stylize the edges, change the colors, etc and have something that is unique *and* fits the theme. Decorative QR codes are the way to go, so I'm not a fan of how this one is just slapped on the shirt.

The link is epic tho ;)

Disagree. It's a much cooler second read this way. Even Woot would probably agree that this link fits the genre much better than their own site.

i don't get it... are the people that are saying how awesome the shirt is is because of the design or because it has a qr code on it, and where it leads to??? because the design isn't all that great and i wouldn't say it was fog worthy. there are far more designs that look way better than this and are more cyberpunk than this. all this looks like is a bird that's dressed like neo from the matrix and that's not all that cyberpunk at all. im sorry but i just don't see what everyone is oooing and awwwwing about

I think if the link linked back to woot, it could risk rejection for being woot-referential.

I like that it refers to an actual cyber-punk author, and that the artist had the graphic generated for him (apparently?) rather than using one that he/she found on the internet.

Spoiler-alert!!!!!
Would want to read some of the author's work before deciding whether to buy the shirt, though, and I'm guessing I won't have time.

I'm the artist and I'm a he.
William Gibson is widely considered the godfather of the genre. He actually wrote a couple of episodes of the X-Files, one called First Person Shooter, and one called Kill Switch, both of which are well worth your time.
Thanks for commenting! I'm pretty sure there is a rule about references back to woot.

I'm failing to see how this isn't pop culture. Without Gibson in the qr I doubt it fogs.

Because to be "pop culture" one must me known as "popular". I don't think this Gibson guy is what anyone would call popular. Sure, within the genre he definitely is... but outside of that in a general "pop culture" sense... not a chance in hell.

I would not wear this shirt, and I don't do the QR Code thing... but I like the creativity here and it is definitely on topic. Well done, and I am voting for it.

Thanks for the vote. I didn't realize Gibson isn't as well known as I thought. His first bestseller wasn't till 2010, according to the wiki page.

I hate to break it to you, but 90% of pop culture (at least on the web) is completely obscure to the average individual. At a techy/nerd site like woot pop culture means cult. Anything Cthulu would be rejected as pop culture. I doubt you could find more than a handful at your local mall that have any idea who Lovecraft is. Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy isn't quite as widely read as the forum censors would lead you to believe. This is pop culture pure and simple. It's questionably on theme anyway and the pop reference is really the only thing that ties it to the theme(not that woot bothered to reject anything for topicality).

That is a good point, but I still think there is a big difference between 'internet popular' and actual "pop culture". They are two distinctly different things. The definition on Wikipedia says it pretty succinctly I think: "Popular culture (commonly known as pop culture) is the totality of ideas, perspectives, attitudes, images and other phenomena that are deemed preferred through an informal consensus within the mainstream of a given society." The key word there being MAINSTREAM. I think there is now that subset of pop culture, which is 'the internet meme'. Which Cthulu could easily fall into... hitchhikers guide, I am not so sure. But it is popular enough to make a hollywood 'hyped' film out of... so that's gotta count for something.

Also, I totally agree with you. Most of the shirts in this derby are not Cyber Punk at all. Most are just Cyber... not so much with the Punk. I think this little bird looks pretty cyberpunk though, so that makes this a little more 'on theme' than many of the other shirts competing in the fog.
