I don't think I could wear this one personally, but you did a great job with the illustration. Good luck; It deserves some attention.

Also, do you have a detail view?

This is so good that when I saw the thumbnail I said to myself "No way is that a real drawing." then I saw who the artist is and all I can say now is "damn you're good!". GMV.

I'm thinking the same thing. The illustration is great, but I couldn't wear it as a shirt.

That's too good for a shirt! It needs to be a giclee canvas print.

Add me to the "I wouldn't necessarily wear it" list, but credit where credit is due, this is masterfully done. I'll confess to much preferring this style over most of your usual submissions.

Just my personal opinion, and perhaps this is intentional but the female looks like a 2011 woman playing pirate dress-up. She doesn't look like someone from the silver screen era, especially the straight blunt edge cut hair.

Nice illo. I agree that she’s too contemporary though. Also, she’s holding a pistol, and she’s got one holster, but it’s got a pistol in it already.

I have to agree with the above post. This is great to look at and really well done but nothing about it says classic movie to me.

Clearly, she swashbuckled it away from someone. ;)

wepnar wrote:I have to agree with the above post. This is great to look at and really well done but nothing about it says classic movie to me.

While she does have a pretty contemporary look, I wouldn't think that it would place this off-theme at all. The description says the design must be classic and to "[t]hink... swashbucklers..." Really, the black and white already lends itself to an older feel, and it's just her hair that messes with the older feel. If she had curly/wavy hair, then there wouldn't be any issue. I personally don't see it being in any risk of being off-topic/rejected.

...or at least that's my take...

Re: Swashbuckler Island

How is this on theme? Because they used the word swashbuckler in the write up and he used it in the title?

Everything about her is contemporary, almost anime-ish when it comes to her figure, face, and hair.

It's a well done design, but it's not on topic. Not that woot cares about those things or anything.

Yeah, I had the same thought.

And come to think of it, the styling of this shirt reminds me a lot of this artwork from World of Warcraft.

Very contemporary especially for a swashbuckler, and it really doesn't fit.

Well there was a smattering of females dressed as pirates in the classic swashbucklers and I'll agree that this girl is wearing a pirate outfit but she just as easily (or perhaps more appropriately) belongs in the contemporary pirate genre such as Pirates of the Caribbean. The fit of the clothes along with the wide kick ass stance would never be in an old school classic, to say nothing of her features and hairstyle. So to me she is a just a girl in a pirate outfit rather than any homage to the classic swashbuckling genre. She belongs in a pirate themed derby not a classic movie one.

This doesn't even look printable to me. I could be very wrong but I have no idea how the girl has the effects she does without gradients or lines that are too small.

I could be wrong, but this just seems like an illustration in the artist's portfolio that he's trying to shoehorn into this derby. It's gorgeous and very well executed, but I really don't see how it fits the theme at all. I'm sure it will print though.

Kinda have to agree with others. While I think the illo is great, it doesn't say silver screen to me at all. She's way too modern. Pirates of the Caribbean is "swashbuckling" as somebody else put it, but I wouldn't consider that to be silver screen also.

I'll concede the hair is a little too fashionista... But I'll contest the stance to a certain extent--these women clearly have ass-kicking stances, just with less jutting hip. As for the clothes, women were wearing tight-fitting pants in their swashbuckling roles, and the dresses they were wearing as their feminine alteregos were just as fitted and tight as the coat on this pirate.

To the artist: As I was browsing through pictures to link, I realized the feminine alterego could have fed into the 'silver screen' aspect. Having swashbuckler back-to-back/shoulder-to-shoulder with the gown-attired socialite would have been pretty cool.

Re: Swashbuckler Island

In a way... I really wish this was on a sepia toned shirt instead of the silvery. I know it wouldn't really fit the theme, but I think it would make it pop far better if on a tan/cream shirt.

Just my two cents. But either way... I'm totally going to buy this shirt if it places.

Honestly, I hate when something doesn't get rejected that should be (to the point that I stopped coming here for a while), but I feel that this shirt is definitely on-theme because nowhere in the rules is it said that the design must explicitly adhere to all elements of a pre-1960 movie/poster. To me it sounds like the design must simply elude to it. Again, I feel that the only thing that makes this appear as though it doesn't fit in the pre-1960 category is the hair; one minor element of a design should not be enough to place it off-topic. Many of the other designs in this derby (which are also on topic) are referencing the pre-1960's but do so in a modern style.

This design still expresses the fundamental character of pre-1960's even if a few of the elements may be considered contemporary.

And, frankly, so many Wooters are too young to have experienced those movies first-hand. They either had some glancing contact via nostalgic parents, or studied the genre. And studying is NOT the same as living. I'm dead ceratin the artist also did not live that era. But the alluision is there, and the art is wonderful. I'm not going to insist on total adherence - too much time has passed!

Unlike is most derbys, this is the ONLY shirt that looks at all interesting (usually I find at least 5 or so even worth voting for). I really like this design. I actually bought several patrickspens shirts before realizing that they were all by the same artist. You really nailed this one!

Personaly I think this is on theme purely for the silver screen classic poster feel... however it keeps reminding me of Treasure Planet for some reason. LOVE that movie but still there really weren't any strong female characters in that movie except the captain and she wasn't a pirate.

Love the design, though I wouldn't wear it on a shirt. Woot really needs to offer prints or mousepads or something else for all this art.

I would agree that it's really well done but doesn't look like it belongs to the pre-1960s era. I grew up on old movies and agree with a previous comment that it feels pretty modern instead of old-style.
