The ruddy ink of the pages are a nice emphasis that this is part of a story and they add to the menacing feel too.

Great illustration!

I love this one, but I have my doubts that it will print well. I think it would still be great without the background effect.

OOOH I like his lamp! I love the way you did the writing in the background to make it look like a page out of an old book. This made me think of the sinister "Candy Man" from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang who entices children with candy only to capture them as oddities for the queen.

I, for one, would like to see a larger deatil of this. It looks frickin' awesome at this size, but I wonder about the 'readability' on a shirt. I also have a tiny quibble about the bare right arm - gravity I suppose, but it seems odd.
I gotta give kudoes on the comp - that mod green background is a perfect compliment to the reds in the actual design. Excellent color sensitivity.

I've been checking out the derby for probably over a year or longer and this is the first shirt I've voted on. I have to have it. Style seems to remind me of old children's books for some reason.

Okay, still love the shirt but what exactly is the fairy tale being depicted here?

This is one of the best designs I've seen on Woot in a while! Whereas most shirts serve only to portray a visual punchline, this shirt portrays so much more with just one image. Masterfully done! I hope you stay around the shirt.woot derbies

GMV easily.

Thank you very much. I'm new to shirt.woot's derby submissions, but I plan on cranking out more designs in the future!

The tale of the toy peddler is wonderfully depicted here. Some say the story goes back to the middle ages, and that even our modern notion of Santa Claus is a "good guy" version, but here the creepy weirdness of the tale stays intact. Beautiful artwork!

So glad this went to the fog quickly and stayed there. I will be first in line to buy when it prints. I think when the wooter asked for a larger image he/she was asking for a close up of the details. It will be fabulous in print!

"The Toy Peddler" is a fairy tale told to me by my grandmother from Yugoslavia (now Macedonia). Without getting too wordy, it begins when a young boy is sent by his mother to go to town to fetch some bread and cheese. On his way, he comes across a mysterious old man with a sack full of toys. The peddler offers him something from his sack of toys, the boy's greed gives in, and uses the food money for his own wants. Of course, it is a trap and is taken by the man. Skip a few pages, and the boy must escape the clutches of the Toy Peddler much like Hansel and Gretel, Vasisilla from Baba Yaga, etc.

Thank you, Hiortdahl, I didn't know that story went as far back as the Middle Ages, or the connection of Santa Claus! Of course, after thinking about it I can see the relationship of the magical men with a sack full of toys!

  • Congratulations on winning a Best Loser Award!
  • This is not SPAM.
  • Winning a BLA does NOT mean this shirt won't print -- I'm hoping it does.
  • Your one and only gift is this crappy little badge in your shirt thread. Enjoy.
  • It was you who picked the pieces up when I was a broken soul and then glued me back together; returned to me what others stole.

I would really like to know the true name of this fairy tale. My google searches have turned up fruitless so far.

I second this. I would love to read the actual tale of the Toy Peddler. Anybody have a link or more information on where to find this?

Anyway you could draw something close to this with a diecast theme? Holding a Hot Wheel in hand instead if crystal ball?
