Re: IM THE MAP
Im the map, Im the map, Im the map, Im the map, Im the map, IM THE MAP!
Rejected because: No maps of fictional worlds you didn't create.
Re: IM THE MAP
Im the map, Im the map, Im the map, Im the map, Im the map, IM THE MAP!
Re: IM THE MAP
I love the expressions, great work.
It make me laugh every time I see it.
Re: IM THE MAP
I would buy this AND one for my son.
Re: IM THE MAP
wasn't one "link" shirt already rejected?
Re: IM THE MAP
Ramyb's Oz shirt was rejected, not due to the "map" itself but for the content around it (i.e. the characters). There was another Zelda shirt rejected due to the rules not allowing 'fictional worlds you didn't create'.
Absolutely no animosity towards the artist, I think this is a great design and it made me laugh. I'm just concerned over why the rejectionator is banning multiple shirts for (somewhat) subtle pop culture references, but this design has made it to the fog for 2 days now. Navi is an icon of the Zelda series, and it is obvious that the other character is Link as well. But a yellow brick road, with a girl and a dog facing AWAY from the viewers POV is rejected just because of the setting of the design? Again, I reiterate no disrespect toward this artist, I'm just WTFing at the rejections.
Re: IM THE MAP
This one got subbed after all the rejections were handed out and they never reject on the weekends. I'd be shocked if it wasn't rejected first thing Monday.
Re: IM THE MAP
This should get rejected. Period.
Re: IM THE MAP
This will no doubt be rejected. It's a dungeon map from The Legend of Zelda, a part of a fictional world you did not create.
D3lusional wrote:This will no doubt be rejected. It's a dungeon map from The Legend of Zelda, a part of a fictional world you did not create.
AND referencing another fictional world you did not create...although I don't know what to call it...a Dora-verse?
Re: IM THE MAP
I'm just confused (and vaguely offended) by the mix of The Legend of Zelda and Dora the Explorer. (I sincerely hoping that my children forget all about Dora by age eight or so, tyvm.)
WOO! PUMPKINS!, yes please!
D3lusional wrote:This will no doubt be rejected. It's a dungeon map from The Legend of Zelda, a part of a fictional world you did not create.
It looks like a pretty generic map to me. The rules don't state no video game characters or no pop culture references, just no maps of fictional worlds you didn't create.
Re: IM THE MAP
Love it. Want it.
Re: IM THE MAP
I really like and think this is a really neat shirt, but I have to agree, with what they have already rejected and rules in place it's not fair to keep this one. =/ There shouldn't be double standards. A lot in this derby seem to be skating on the edge of the rules. I think my favorite so far that is on Theme is Star Map.
Re: IM THE MAP
Yes.
Re: IM THE MAP
I think this is an awesome design and would really love to own it! I love the LOZ and I would have the same reaction if my map starting singing! I agree with some of the others here that this will most likely get rejected, and at that time I will be very sad.
Re: IM THE MAP
Can someone explain to me how this one gets by the copyright rule? Why was the other Link shirt rejected and not this one?
Re: IM THE MAP
It's awesome, I love it, and would probably buy it but I have to agree... why hasn't this been rejected? It seems to break rules that others were rejected for.

Im not sure about some of the rejections this time. I understand ramys fire fox design being too close to the shirt by diana that's already been printed, but I don't understand the oz ones being that the map in question is a map of the US.
There is a major difference between my link shirt though and spirits. He has an actual map that is either of the mushroom kingdom (a world he didn't create) or hyrule (again a map on original world). The rules didn't say no pop culture or video games, they said no maps of worlds you didn't create. The map im showing is not just a map, its a character and a play off doras map buddy. The map in dora if your familiar with it never actually unravels himself to show the way but hops around in front of another larger map, letting the viewer impose any local to him or even be blank for all we know. I added a bit of a curvy dotted line with a giant x on it to further show that this is not a Zelda map and is totally out of place in that world especially since its talking to, hence the reaction from the other character. That's my personal ideas on it and so far it looks like soot has similar thoughts. Im not going to claim to understand the rejectionator though as I've had non sensical rejections myself in the past like my first van from the v derby. Hope this helps.
If the 'I'm the map' shirt gets rejected, pls post elsewhere so I can buy it. I literally LOL'ed :D

It is clearly the map from Dora. The fact that in the cartoon it never unravels itself is irrelevant. Dora's map is obviously a map of Dora's world which she turns to when she needs directions.

Again though as you just pointed out its not exactly the map from dora. Not only does it not look the same, mine is actually unraveld a bit ( which the dora map does not do) to show its not that map nor a zelda map. In the end its up to woot though.

The shirt says "I'm the map!" right on it. You obviously had to change it for copyright purposes, but to say that you were not illustrating the Dora map is being flat out disingenuous.
Re: IM THE MAP
Sorry, I haven't read anything so far that justifies this remaining when both of Ramy's "Dorothy" designs (among others) got rejected. If Dorothy in front of a map indicates OZ, then certainly Link in front of...anything indicates Hyrule.
Can someone on the rejection committee please elaborate?

I completely agree and I'm honestly surprised this is still here. I only left a cursory comment earlier because in light of the other rejections as well as the ones this morning, this is a clear rejection. I don't see any way this could get around the reasoning for the others.
I had to explain to my boyfriend that the map was referencing Dora the Explorer.. I think he lacked a childhood.

Also currently in the fog is Waldo (of Where's Waldo) holding a map. Does that one also fall into the same bucket? But, then again, Waldo generally romps around the USA and other real places in the world, so maybe that doesn't count. However, there's the Wizard of Oz shirt with a map of the USA and Kansas which was rejected (The USA and Kansas is a fictional world!). Wow, I don't envy the rejectionator's job this derby or the artists (who I imagine thought they were interpreting the rules correctly). This is a bit confusing. They probably should have just stuck 'no pop culture' into the list of rules to avoid this mess (but that's hindsight for ya).

It does. I tattled on that one at the same time as this one and all the rest. Honestly I hadn't noticed it creep up into the fog, but now I see it's still there.

My reasoning on this is woot wanted pop-culture in moderation, one element is fine But like Spiritgreen's Link your Link is paired with another pop-culture reference. There is nothing solely yours in the design. That is why using the Map character from Dora doesn't fly here while it does in the Patcha the explorer design.
Wait, Patcha is just a made up name, right? I haven't read the right kind of books to know.
Edit: Well, pop-culture in moderation may not be the perfect way to explain it either, since someone created a Nintendoland and had like 20 different pop-culture references in it. But that theme park was his, you have the 2 references without anything else to say they are not in one of those fictional worlds. If you had put link in New York and had him turn to the equally confused Map for guidance I would guess that it would have gotten by.
Re: IM THE MAP
That is the STUPIDEST reason to reject a shirt EVER. I wanted this shirt so bad. Haha.

No, this rejection made sense.
Rejecting an entry that showed a map of the USA and pinpointing Kansas City, MO as being fictional ... now that didn't make sense.

+1
Re: IM THE MAP
This rejection made absolutely no sense whatso-LOOK BEHIND YOU!ing-ever. Take the map as it's own entity and pull it out of the scene. It's a rolled up parchment with some tic-marks and an X. That is by no means a map of a fictional world, there is no world being depicted on the map. Throw link in there and all of a sudden we can assume it's a map of hyrule or a dungeon? The map remains devoid of any detail, no borders, no lines, no states or provinces, major landmarks, etc. Oh but, some tic-marks and an X marks the spot is completely depicting a world the author did not create. Yes I'm butt-hurt this was taken off, but that doesn't take away the fact that it was unjustly taken down. Good job ass hats.
jrhunter wrote:I had to explain to my boyfriend that the map was referencing Dora the Explorer.. I think he lacked a childhood.
Considering that Dora has only been on since 2000, and is targeted at children ages 2-5, I think the question is, how old is your boyfriend? ![]()
Re: IM THE MAP
All of the rejections are consistent, but I wish this derby would have spared the designers' collective effort by explicitly banning video game or pop culture references.
This is a tasteful mesh of popular icons that fully conforms to the written rules. What a waste.
Re: IM THE MAP
There are quite a few rejections for maps of fictional worlds that the artist didn't create that don't even break that rule. At least Woot is being relatively consistent here, but they seem to be banning shirts for using pop culture references, despite not specifying that rule. This is a pretty generic map, as was the one in the original Waldo shirt. I've seen Dora before, and this map is not that map. Some of the rejections make sense, others, not at all. This is in the latter category.
Re: IM THE MAP
Just less sales, from me at least. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
There's 2 rejects I'd have likely bought. There's nothing in the fog that interests me in the slightest.
