I don't yet own the original. I'm waiting until it's in danger, in the hopes that I can help save it.
However, if this makes it into the 3 I'll buy it instantly. And hey, if it makes it to 3rd place in the derby, it will be the perfect christmas present to myself.

Ninjas are a generic characters. This isn't referencing any movie or anything.
It'll be like arguing because Frosty the Snowman exists, then every entry with a snowman should be rejected. Or that every entry with a penguin should be rejected because there were movies with penguins before.

Technically speaking, ninjas would be considered pop-culture. Practically speaking, pop-culture is here defined as someone else's popular intellectual property.

Movie references aren't the sole requirement for something to be considered pop culture [even though there are literally thousands of ninja movies]. And the only thing "generic" about ninjas is how overused they are. Overused, because they are a they have been "popularized" via movies, TV, comics, and primarily the Internet.
The same reason zombies are pop culture, no SPECIFIC zombie character from some movie, but ALL zombies. Overused. Overused by people who constantly jam the character into contexts they have no business being in.

I prefer this definition...
"Popular culture (commonly known as pop culture) is the totality of ideas, perspectives, attitudes, memes, images and other phenomena that are deemed preferred per an informal consensus within the mainstream of a given culture, especially Western culture of the early to mid 20th century and the emerging global mainstream of the late 20th and early 21st century. Heavily influenced by mass media, this collection of ideas permeates the everyday lives of the society."

I take it that you've flagged ALL the entries that have bunnies, penguins, a snowman, snow, and trees too, then? They're all "overused" this week, y'know ...
As I see it, the pop culture aspect in context here is when it's based on someone else's intellectual property as a reference.
Staff is bound to show up sooner or later to say what's right and wrong, so no more arguing, 'k?

No, because (1) they are actually RELEVENT to the context of the derby, and (2) they aren't pop culture.

Re: Unstealthiest Ninja II
I don't think ninjas are pop culture at all. Referencing a video game, or a movie, or a book seems more pop culture-y. A ninja is a historical figure whose skills (or lack of in this case) are admired. It's like historical culture.

Please don't take this as an attack on the design, which is cute enough, I suppose, if you're into that kind of thing.
I'm simply curious about the massive appeal of "sequel" shirts here at Woot. Personally, I just don't get it. Do people really build a whole wardrobe of t-shirts that look relatively similar (or almost identical, depending on the artist/concept)? Whatever happened to variety being the spice of life?

Why does Hollywood produce so many sequels/prequels? Why are so many shirts made that ref other people's IPs? Because familiarity breeds comfort and sequels generally have a built in audience. People also like to collect things, as evidenced by the sales trends of cute animal or food shirts.
I also really enjoy it when a sequel builds on the original. I just watched the new Sherlock Holmes movie and I loved it, way more fun than the first and I really enjoyed the first. The movie also gets to go right into the action as the characters were introduced and developed already so they don't have to waste time doing it again.

It wasn't until this last DT in which Fable's meat bunnies won; she didn't get the votes the other times. Ramy's turbunguins has fans, but (thankfully) he doesn't always win with them either.

The idea is clever, but I personally find the characters and execution lacking. While I agree that ninjas aren't technically pop culture, I do find the submission of this sequel shirt to be in poor taste considering the original is still in the reckoning. It just seems like a cheap cash in which is capitalizing on something you already have done, and way too soon. My 2 cents, but best of luck regardless.

I'm gonna be honest. I love the idea of sequel shirts / recurring characters. I'd be happy to see This little guy at least a few more times. He's cute, he's funny, the *concept* is funny (on both shirts)... If I like certain characters or the way a certain artist draws/designs, I will buy *those* shirts. But I can't see purchasing shirts I don't love in order to justify buying the ones that I DO love. No sense in buying a shirt I'll avoid wearing because I always want to wear my other ones.

Ah shirt.woot. A place where artists can express their talent and love for placing thoughts into a picture that people can enjoy. People make the decisions here, which really is great because deserving designs people actually want get printed. And, people can submit their own designs if they'd like, or just think there aren't any shirts that are up to their standards. Users can comment on designs, vote for designs, and talk to others about designs.
You can even start troll wars if you'd like, as evidenced by, well, all these commentors above me who have contributed nothing useful for the other users of the site, who insist on trashing certain designs, and find joy in waiting to see the radical outcry of the other users for their own personal enjoyment.
This design wins. If it were just trying to cash in, there'd be more designs of it all the time and the artist would probably not be submitting it for voting, but instead have their own shirt line and website, with dozens of the same idea slightly altered for sale on there, not woot. If it were considered pop culture, it would have been rejected long ago. You don't work for woot, and only their oppinion matters on this subject. If the idea wasn't original and lacked any good qualities for a shirt design, there wouldn't be this much support for a print, the second time around, and the original would have been reckoned after a short few weeks.
Good luck, there's tough competition out there, don't worry about the critics and control what you can control. That being said, you've got my vote.
