In ancient times, explorers would set off into uncharted lands without fear of what might lie ahead. The thrill of adventure is what motivated them to travel to where others were too afraid to go. The title "Hic Sunt Dracones" is Latin for "Here there are Dragons" and was placed on uncharted areas of maps to signify the dangers that may lie there.

This is wonderful. Oh, we needed this entry for the map derby. I can just imagine a small boy -aspiring to be an explorer- wondering what the 'dracones' will look like!

This messes with my brain so much! I keep playing 'find the dragon' in the layout and topography of the continents. Wierd and cool.

Me too! Makes me wish one was actually in there (other than that little guy in the ocean).

Ditto! If this doesn't end up in the fog, I'd love to see it re-subbed sometime with the continents made of a (or more than 1) dragon.

Either way, it's a really cool (and true) depiction of what motivates.

Thanks for the comments guys. I wish I had thought about making dragons in the continents/oceans. That would have been pretty cool.

Actually, in the thumbnail, the way it is cut on the right appears to be a dragon to me.
